Zhang Weili emerges as betting favorite to beat Yan Xiaonan in UFC 300 title fight

Opening as a surprising betting underdog to successfully defend her title against Chinese compatriot, Yan Xiaonan ahead of her return to the Octagon last August – a one-sided win for Zhang Weili over challenger, Amanda Lemos appears to have swung the odds her in her favor ahead of their historic UFC 300 title battle in April.

Zhang Weili, the current and two-time undisputed strawweight champion, has been sidelined since she landed a completely one-sided unanimous decision shutout over the surging, Lemos at UFC 292 back in August in Boston, defeating the Brazilian in each round en route to a massive swing in the scorecards and her first successful title defense as part of her second reign.

As for Xiaonan, the divisional contender most recently laid waste to former strawweight champion and common-foe, Jessica Andrade – following in Zhang Weili’s footsteps courtesy of a dominant first round knockout win over the Brazilian back at UFC 288.

And pairied for a historic, all-Chinese championship affair at UFC 300 in April, defending champion, Zhang Weili has opened as an impressive -345 betting favorite to defeat the Liaoning contender, Xiaonan – who is on a line of +275 currently.

Earlier this month, promotional CEO, Dana White confirmed the booking of a long-anticipated clash of former gold holders, Justin Gaethje, and Max Holloway – with the pair set to meet for the symbolic BMF championship.

A series of other high-profile bouts have also been selected for the card in the form of an officially-billed lightweight title eliminator between former champion, Charles Oliveira, who returns in a high-stakes pairing against streaking Armenian challenger, Arman Tsarukyan.

Former light heavyweight champion, Jiri Prochazka also joins Oliveira on the card, in another potential number one contender fight, as he takes on Austrian contender, Aleksandar Rakic who snaps his two year stay from the promotion.

Furthermore, a clash of former divisional champions and respective knockout artists land on UFC 300, with former flyweight kingpin, Deiveson Figueiredo making his sophomore outing at the bantamweight limit, in a fight against former gold holder, Cody Garbrandt.

Unbeaten middleweight contender and uber-prospect, Bo Nickal also makes his return on the card, taking on Cody Brundage in an eye-catching clash, as the Colorado native searches for his third consecutive win since landing in the Octagon.

Former undisputed bantamweight kingpin, Aljamain Sterling features for the first time since his record-setting divisional reign came to an end back in August – taking on Calvin Kattar in his first venture to featherweight, ahead of a planned prolonged stay at the 145 pound limit, following his success a divisional lower.

Zhang Weili books UFC 300 comeback against compatriot, Yan Xiaonan

UFC CEO, Dana White confirmed the pairing of Zhang Weili and Yan Xiaonan in an undisputed strawweight title fight at UFC 300 during an announcement on his official social media account tonight.

In the midst of a three-fight winning run, which includes a stunning spinning-back fist KO win over former champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Hebei native, Weili struck strawweight spoils for a second time back in November 2022 at UFC 281, stopping Carla Esparza with a gruesome second round rear-naked choke win at Madison Square Garden.

Boasting an impressive 24-3 professional record, Weili has landed other notable victories over the likes of Tecia Torres, Jessica Andrade, and the above-mentioned Jedrzejczyk during her Octagon tenure.

An alum of the UFC since her 2017 landing, Xiaonan had turned in a prior decision win over Mackenzie Dern to snap a two-fight skid to former champion, Esparza and Marina Rodriguez – which ended her perfect-promotional run. Xiaonan also holds victories over former title challengers, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, and Claudia Gadelha.

The addition of Weili Zhang’s strawweight title fight against Yan Xiaonan comes as the first championship bout officially set for UFC 300 – which is expected to bring with it a host of high-profile title matchups.

Zhang Weili calls for UFC 300 fight with Alexa Grasso I would love to defend my title against you

Receiving a call out from undisputed strawweight best, Zhang Weili to feature against her at UFC 300 in a flyweight title siege, undisputed divisional champion, Alexa Grasso has welcomed the possibility to fight the Chinese star in April of next year.

Weili, a two-time and current strawweight champion, has been sidelined since UFC 292 back in August, successfully defending her title in a one-sided unanimous decision win over Brazilian challenger, Amanda Lemos.

As for Grasso, the Mexican fan-favorite is currently recovering from recent hand surgery suffered in her flyweight title rematch against Valentina Shevchenko at Noche UFC back in September, with the duo fighting to a split decision draw.

Zhang Weili calls out Alexa Grasso

And despite the fact she’s been widely linked with a massive clash against Chinese compatriot, Yan Xiaonan in her return to the Octagon – Weili has called for a UFC 300 flyweight title siege against Grasso, who herself has been linked with a trilogy rubber clash with Shevchenko.

“Hi champion, maybe the fans want to see us fight at UFC 300,” Zhang Weili posted to Alexa Grasso.

“@zhangweilimma I admire you so much!” Alexa Grasso replied. “And I’ld love to defend my title with you. Would you make 125 [pounds]?”

Winning the undisputed strawweight title for the second time in her Octagon tenure back in November of last year at Madison Square Garden, Weili turned in a dominant second round win over Carla Esparza, defeating the inaugural champion with a rear-naked choke win.

Back in March of this year, Grasso landed the flyweight title with a shocking upset win over Shevchenko, rallying to stop the dominant gold holder with a fourth round neck crank submission win.

Yan Xiaonan betting favorite to fight Zhang Weili at UFC China card in December

Amid rumors of an expected return to China for the Octagon before the close of the year, the promotion have been backed to bring with it it’s two most standout talents in the form of two-time and current strawweight champion, Zhang Weili, as well as surging contender, Yan Xiaonan for a potential December 9. showcase.

Yet to return to ‘The Land of the Dragon’ since August 2019, on that occasion, then-championship challenger, Zhang Weili managed to turn in a stunning first round win over defending strawweight queen, Jessica Andrade – stopping the Brazilian with a blistering first round TKO, to become the first Chinese-born fighter in Octagon history to strike gold.

And according to reports over the course of the weekend, the Octagon is expected to land in China for the first time since that 2019 event later this year, for a blockbuster event on December 9.

Yan Xiaonan betting favorite to face Zhang Weili on potential December card in China

A host of bookies and markets, including new online betting sites are already offering odds on Weili’s next title challenger, with the likes of the aforenoted, Xiaonan, and surging grappling talent, Tatiana Suarez initially expected to emerge as likely candidates to face the dominant Hebei gold holder.

Naturally, Weili, who is fresh from a unanimous decision win over title challenger, Amanda Lemos earlier this summer, has been pegged to headline the homecoming card.

And given the above-mentioned, Xiaonan’s recent string of victories over both Mackenzie Dern and common-foe, former champion, Andrade, the Liaoning native is currently available as short as even money to stand opposite Weili for the strawweight crown if the Octagon returns to their native China before the close of the year.

And despite losing her first strawweight championship either side of fights with Rose Namajunas, Weili cemented her Octagon legacy with a pair of memorable fights with former champion, Joanna Jedrzejczyk – turning in a first Fight of the Year, before stopping the Pole with a thunderous spinning back-fist KO in a SIngapore rematch last year.

Scaling the throne once more with a stunningly-dominant submission win over inaugural champion, Carla Esparza last November, Weili kicked off her second title reign back in August in the co-main event of UFC 292 in Boston with a decision shutout win over Brazilian phenom, Lemos.

Avoiding a continued losing skid after back-to-back losses against Esparza and Brazilian striker, Marina Rodriguez, Xiaonan, the current number two ranked contender had racked up wins over both Dern, and the above-mentioned Andrade to likely earn her first title siege since beginning her Octagon stint back in November 2017.

With five fights remaining on her newly-inked UFC contract, Xiaonan, as mentioned earlier, is available as short as even money to draw Weili in a title affair in the pair’s native China on December 9. – with the Octagon gearing up for a return to Asia.

17-3 as a professional, technical striker, Xiaonan, who has racked up eight career knockout wins in the process, took home notable victories over the likes of Kailin Curran, Viviane Pereira, Angela Hill, as well as former title challenges, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, and Claudia Gadelha before faltering for the first time in the Octagon.
