For years, fans have dreamt of a potential superfight between Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre. That talk is quickly fading into a Silva-Jon Jones superfight, yet neither man seems willing to commit to the idea.
One fighter who knows both men very well is Chael Sonnen, and he’s clearly not happy about the lack of interest for the fight between the two competitors (via MMAmania.com).
If you’re going to go fight a guy, go fight a guy. It drives me crazy. People are out talking about Anderson (Silva) and Jon (Jones), these guys should be calling Dana (White) right now begging to fight each other, but it’s not going to go that way. You got these two guys and they’re great, but they’re a couple of chickens. They should be calling each other out. They should be grabbing the microphone and say, ‘I want to fight that guy, I don’t want the debate.’ But it won’t happen that way. Dana’s going to have to call these guys and then they’re going to have to dangle a carrot then they’ll have to negotiate. We’re in the fight business. If you don’t want to fight, don’t raise your hand.
Sonnen is a joke for a lot of people within the MMA community, but you can say this about him, he made it a point to try and face two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in MMA today.
The former middleweight title challenger sounds a lot like the majority of MMA fans who want to see this fight happen. Neither Jones or Silva have seemed interested in the potential bout despite an increasing amount of fan interest.
There’s no doubt White would love to put a Silva-Jones match together for the UFC’s first trip to Madison Square Garden (if it ever happens) or in Cowboys Stadium in Dallas. The buy-rates could exceed that of other notable pay-per-view events like UFC 100 and UFC 148, which would equate to some big paydays for everyone involved.
It appears as this will go down as another superfight that won’t happen as Jones seems content on breaking Tito Ortiz’s record and then jumping up to heavyweight. Silva will face Chris Weidman in July and there’s no guarantee he will leave the Octagon with the belt in hand.
