Earlier this year, Gegard Mousasi made his long-awaited and long-overdue UFC debut.

He had been on fans’ radar since winning the Dream Middleweight Grand Prix back in 2008, so when it was announced that Mousasi was finally headed to the Octagon, it caused a real stir.

When it was then announced that the now-205-pound Mousasi would be taking on the dangerous Alexander Gustafsson, that stir got a little larger. Then, of course, Gustafsson got injured, Mousasi was given Ilir Latifi on a few days notice and he cruised to a relatively lackluster but easy victory.

After the fight, Mousasi announced that he had suffered an injury in training as well, which led to his cautious approach and would prevent him from returning to the Octagon for the immediate future.

Since that fight, he has flirted with a possible return to the 185-pound division. And, according to his Twitter account, he already has an opponent picked out should the mulled over move become a reality:

Belfort is just 4-2 over his last six contests, but when you note that his losses came against Jon Jones and Anderson Silva, and that each of his four victories have been stoppages, he is actually as hot as it gets right now.

So while a showdown between him and Mousasi is most definitely an intriguing proposal, the Brazilian may have bigger fish to fry by the end of the year.

That’s no guarantee, though, and a Belfort loss this summer or fall would definitely change things, so the scenario is a plausible one.

The matchup would sure look good on the UFC’s end-of-the-year card anyway you look at it.
