UFC 161 ivThe Ultimate Fighting Championship held it’s first event in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on Saturday (June 15, 2013) night with the UFC 161: Evans vs. Henderson pay-per-view event.

The MTS Centre in Winnipeg hosted the live show which featured matches aired on ppv, FX television, and streaming video on the web.

Headlining were a pair of former champions in Rashad Evans, who held the UFC 205-lbs strap, and Dan Henderson, who was a former two division PRIDE champ as well as the Strikeforce light heavyweight title holder.

Evans was the quicker of the two men, keeping ‘Hendo’ just out of range while scoring with his jab throughout the fight. A couple of knockdowns for each occurred but nothing significant resulted from it. In the end, Henderson looked far more exhausted taking deep breaths while Evans maintained his pace. The judges would see it as a split decision for ‘Suga’ who earned scores of 29-28, 29-28, and 28-29 to erase a two fight losing skid.

Anyone watching the event and wondering what all the cheering about during Ryan Jimmo’s post fight speech, there was a fight on the floor of the arena. It took awhile before security broke it up, several people were taken away by the police and one person left on a stretcher.
