While UFC middleweight contender Vitor Belfort looks like he’s destined for a rematch with Dan Henderson later this year, according to UFC Tonight on Twitter, that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten about the bad blood he has with Chael Sonnen.
Shortly after UFC Tonight reported that Belfort vs. Henderson II was in the works, “The Phenom” lashed out at Sonnen—one of the show’s analysts—on TwitPlus.
Earlier in the evening on the show, Sonnen called out Belfort for not answering former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi’s repeated challenges (via MMA Junkie).
Belfort shot back with his own thoughts on Twitter:
@sonnench u are very good actor. But u couldn’t hide that u are very relief that u don’t have to fight me. I know from a very close friend of yours that since I K.O YOUR coach Matt lindand your a very afraid to fight me. Don’t be afraid to admit, and let my friend @kennyflorian talk. Only u talk
Belfort did indeed make short work of Lindland back in January 2009, taking just 37 seconds to knock him out.
Lindland, like Sonnen, was a staple at Oregon’s Team Quest gym for many years. However, that location has recently closed and “The American Gangster” now trains at the Reign Training Center in California.
While Sonnen has made it abundantly clear that he wants his next fight to be against former Pride star Wanderlei Silva, he has also been open to a matchup with Belfort.
Belfort called out Sonnen on Twitter almost immediately after the American submitted Mauricio Rua at UFC Fight Night 26 last week, with Sonnen accepting.
However, it seems that the higher ups of the UFC didn’t feel that fight was in the cards for this year.
With Belfort likely being booked for the rest of the year, the grudge match between Sonnen and “The Axe Murderer” now looks more likely than ever.
