The ex-wife of former UFC light heavyweight Thiago Silva has finally offered her side of the story regarding last Thursday’s alleged domestic violence incident that took place at Team Popovich Martial Arts and Fitness.
Married to Silva from 2004 to 2012, Thaysa Kamiji told Brazilian website UOL (via MMA Fighting) that her ex-husband’s continued abuse of cocaine contributed to his arrest Thursday.
“You know what I don’t understand? We had a healthy relationship, we always talked, each one respected the other’s space. He became (violent) over the past three weeks. I think that’s the consequence of the use of cocaine.”
The Broward (Fla.) County Sheriff Office’s SWAT Team arrested Silva in his home shortly after the former UFC stalwart allegedly drove to Team Popovich and threatened Kamiji and Popovich with a handgun.
Kamiji, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, considers Popovich her boyfriend and coach.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office charged Silva with two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and resisting an officer without violence.
Kamiji, however, admitted that the incident didn’t mark the first time that Silva crossed the line violently with a weapon.
In fact, according to a police report from Jan. 30, via MMAMania, Silva placed a revolver in the mouth of Kamiji and threatened to kill her.
“My marriage was over in December of 2012,” Kamiji said. “In our relationship, I had to deal with the imbalance and aggressions. But I never went to talk to the police because I fear the reactions. Even after I was assaulted, I did not speak.”
Silva amassed a 7-3-2 record in the UFC’s 205-pound division, which he joined in 2007. He won five UFC fights via KO and only suffered losses to Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans and Alexander Gustafsson.
Silva never tested positive for cocaine in his 21-fight pro career, although the 31-year-old Brazilian had to settle for no-contests in his UFC wins over Brandon Vera and Stanislav Nedkov.
Silva falsified a urine sample in his post-fight drug test following his bout with Vera at UFC 125. Two fights later, Silva submitted Nedkov with an arm-triangle choke, only to fail his post-fight drug screening for marijuana.
