Nearly a year after she was shockingly knocked out by Holly Holm at UFC 193, the MMA world is still awaiting any official news – let alone a fight announcement – that Ronda Rousey is actually returning to the Octagon.
One former UFC champ doesn’t believe Rousey will ever return and even if she does, she can no longer draw the throngs of fans she did before losing.
Never one to let his true feelings be hidden, legendary UFC tournament champ Don Frye weighed in on the scenario to Submission Radio:
“No, she’s not coming back. She’ll never fight again. She used to be able to draw fans, now she can’t. Everybody’s seen through her.”
UFC President Dana White recently told Globo Rousey would be back to face current champion Amanda Nunes next, possibly even before the end of the year. Frye doesn’t think she deserves that fight, and should have to beat Holm, who’s now lost two straight herself, to get back into a title fight:
“If she wants to come back, she should do her rematch against Holly Holm. And then if you beat Holly, then you can have a title match. But if you get your ass kicked like that, you don’t deserve a title match.”
While that’s a strong opinion sure to turn some heads, the bottom line, especially in this era of the UFC where the biggest money fights rule above all else, is that Rousey will almost certainly be booked into an immediate title fight against the surging Nunes when she comes back.
And that’s understandable, because it’s obviously what is best for business. It’s on Rousey to prove to her fans that she still has the fire to fight and defeat the best, because Nunes has been running through top-ranked women’s bantamweight with a vengeance.
