Conor McGregor generated plenty of headlines during the UFC 205 pre-fight press conference Thursday with his wacky antics and Smokin’ Joe Frazier-inspired outfit. The back-and-forth that got the most attention, however, was a dustup that erupted after McGregor skipped across the stage, snatched Alvarez’s lightweight title belt and placed it next to his own featherweight belt (warning: NSFW language):
That’s nothing new for McGregor. He famously (warning: NSFW language) snatched Jose Aldo’s featherweight belt during the build to their ill-fated fight at UFC 189, starting a scuffle with Aldo before the Brazilian later withdrew from the bout because of an unrelated rib injury.
The difference here, though, was that there were two titles in play.
When Alvarez returned to the dais, he stormed over to McGregor, snatched a belt and went back to his seat. The only problem? He grabbed McGregor’s featherweight belt—which was on McGregor’s right—instead of his own title (warning: NSFW language):
The rest of the presser went down as one would expect, but when the stage cleared for the staredown photo, each man walked away with the other’s title.
It’s not clear if the belts have returned to their rightful owners yet.
