Former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem is creating a buzz in the mixed martial arts world as of late.
Recently, “The Demolition Man” was cut by the aforementioned San Jose-based promotion following an injury that barred him from being able to compete at this past September show, opposite of Antonio “Big Foot” Silva in the semifinals of the Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament.
Now, Overeem has since smoothed things over with the Zuffa brass and has signed an exclusive contract with the UFC and will be taking on his biggest challenge to date, when he meets with former titleholder Brock Lesnar later this year.
A big part of Alistair’s recent success has been that of his affiliation with Team Golden Glory, whom have been a part of Overeem’s entire career as a professional.
Overeem took to Twitter to discuss the matter in full:
I would like to make a statement regarding the recent news of the separation from my long-time management Golden Glory. As with any relationship, there are good times and bad times – you have your common ground and your differences. As with any relationship, you have trust. When differences lead to a breach of trust, there’s no turning back and no way to continue a positive, working relationship. I don’t air my dirty laundry. I would appreciate the respect regarding my privacy to not disclose any further details on this matter.Again, I would like to thank team Golden Glory for all the years we worked together and wish them success for the future.
During his tenure with Golden Glory, Overeem has achieved success as K-1 World Grand Prix champion in 2010, as well as earning success in Japan’s DREAM organization, becoming the first—albeit interim—heavyweight titleholder.
Alistair has since discussed a potential move to the United States, possibly taking residence in either Las Vegas or in Los Angeles, which could mean that Overeem, 31, could soon fine shelter with a new “trustworthy” team.
