For one of the rare times in UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre’s fighting career, he has been forced to pull out of an upcoming bout with challenger Carlos Condit.

The fight was set to take place next weekend at UFC 137 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, before the pound-for-pound fighter sprained his knee in training earlier this week.

The good thing is, injuries don’t last forever, and the Canadian star will likely be ready to return to action by early next year, according to an interview he did with sportsnet.ca.

“I would say maybe end of January, possibly the beginning of February. Super Bowl, around this time,” St-Pierre said.

“I’m not going to lie, I cried yesterday,” St-Pierre said. “I had a ton of pressure falling off my shoulders, because for the last few days I was in the mindset that I was nervous for the fight. I was excited for the fight but I was also nervous to know if I was going to be able to fight.

“Now all the pressure is off, I feel much better. I’m going to do some rehab, maybe take a vacation because I went through a lot. It’s not only the fight, it’s all the training camp, I went through a lot of stuff. I need to reset the whole thing again, and I’ll be ready for the next one.”

After informing Dana White and the UFC that he would not be able to compete on the card, the co-main event between former UFC champion B.J. Penn and former Strikeforce champion Nick Diaz took the slot and will now headline the card.
