At last night’s UFC 137, the lightweight division was thrown for a loop once again as another top contender ‘s win streak was stopped.
German striker Dennis Siver was riding a four fight win streak before Donald Cerrone stopped it with a second round rear naked choke.
Siver now joins a host of other streaking lightweights whose run towards the title have been stopped.
Recently, Joe Lauzon ended Melvin Guillard’s win streak – and in only 48 seconds. Lauzon tapped Guillard out at UFC 136 earlier this month, earning the Massachussetts fighter another Submission of the Night bonus.
Earlier this year, former WEC Lightweight champion Anthony Pettis also saw his title plans set back when Clay Guida outwrestled him to take the decision. Pettis was poised to get a shot at the winner of Frankie Edgar versus Gray Maynard before that bout was pushed back due to injuries.
Now that the division is starting to take shape, other top contenders have emerged.
Cerrone has been on a roll himself since joining the UFC, extending his UFC win streak to a perfect 4-0. He even plans on fighting one more time before the end of the year with another win definitely adding him to the top of the contender’s list.
The winner of Ben Henderson and Clay Guida also looks poised to go on to face UFC Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar.
And let’s not forget Strikeforce Lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez who has also been in talks to join the UFC ranks.
Regardless of who gets the next shot, any of these contenders would make for an exciting match-up.
