Following the UFC on Fox 3 press conference, UFC president Dana White had to address the lightweight title situation and give his thoughts as to where the top fighters stand in the division. The main event for the May 5 card will be Jim Miller vs. Nate Diaz.
“Pettis is going to be looking for another fight,” said White, who later tweeted a rematch between former champion Frankie Edgar and current champ Benson Henderson was going to be next. “Let’s say we end up giving Frankie the rematch, Frankie gets the rematch, these guys fight May 5th, maybe he fights Pettis.”
With the rematch between Edgar and Henderson being scheduled for later this year, it gives the UFC time to match up the winner of Miller and Diaz with Pettis for a No. 1 contender’s fight, possibly on the same card.
The entire FOX card includes Diaz vs. Miller, Josh Koscheck vs. Johny Hendricks, Rousimar Palhares vs. Alan Belcher and Pat Barry vs. Lavar Johnson.
White also addressed the women’s mega-fight between Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey. Rousey submitted Tate with a first-round armbar to become the Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion on Saturday.
“Leading up to this fight with the women, I’ve been talking to them the whole way through, and all the promotion behind that thing,” White said. “We had already produced all this stuff to promote the fight, and we scrapped it all and made it consistent with what Showtime had done. I’ve been very involved with the whole thing behind the scenes.”
“It doesn’t change my stance (on women’s MMA),” White said. “I’ve never said anything negative about women fighting in mixed martial arts. What I said is there are not enough good women to make an entire division. I personally believe this was the biggest women’s fight in MMA history.”
Following his loss to Ryan Bader from UFC 144, former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson has stated on Twitter that he will only have one more fight in the UFC.
“I talked to Rampage yesterday for about an hour and a half,” White said. “Rampage just lost, and I think Rampage takes his losses hard. We’ll see what happens.”
