Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar finally dropped to featherweight, and I could not be happier.
Edgar was a phenomenal fighter at lightweight and a tough out for anybody, but I think he will be an absolutely dominant beast at featherweight.
For his first bout, why not match up an unstoppable force with an immovable object?
Let’s give the fans fireworks right away and create the most intriguing featherweight matchup possible for his debut.
The man standing across the cage from Edgar for such a bout has to be the Korean Zombie, Chan Sung Jung.
I feel that Edgar, if anyone, has done enough to warrant an immediate title shot, but I am of the camp that holds nobody deserves an immediate title shot upon switching weight classes.
He needs one good performance, and the title shot is his.
The Korean Zombie is the man for the job.
As exciting a fighter as the UFC has on its loaded roster, the Korean Zombie brings it night after night, and he is consistently in fights that have MMA fans buzzing for weeks.
His wars with Leonard Garcia are well-documented, but his most recent performances against Mark Hominick and Dustin Poirier proved that he is also extremely dangerous.
Mr. Zombie has always been entertaining, but demolishing two top featherweights back-to-back has earned him the right to welcome Edgar to the featherweight division.
Edgar is arguably the toughest dude in the UFC, but if we are compiling a list, Chan Sung Jung has to be on there, too.
This matchup cannot disappoint (save a fluke eye poke or injury), and it would be a great way for both fighters to prove their legitimacy in the division.
Each man is well-rounded, each has the heart of a champion and each will be hungry to prove his status as an elite mixed martial artist.
Because of this, the fight is good anyway, but when you throw in the fact that there will be title-shot implications on the line, you know each is going to be extra focused and extra sharp on fight night.
How much better does it get?
