If you’ve been following Caged In, you know that we love both Super Fight League and InvictaFC. We love the Super Fight League (SFL) theme song and their incredibly pitiful level of talent as much as we love Invicta for being able to pull millions of viewers for a non-HD online stream.
The two start-up promotions have faced their fair share of criticism this year. Super Fight League was torn to shreds for using Bob Sapp in what was one of the biggest shams of the year. Criticism of Invicta has been limited to Shannon Knapp’s claims that they are doing major views on their streamed events.
I don’t know about anyone else, but I was wondering when the two promotions would decide to team up and form a Super Mediocre League (trademark pending).
Well, it seems that my prayers have been answered.
OK, that’s a bit of a fib. I didn’t actually pray, but Invicta and SFL have decided to team up to bring you the best of the rest (worst?) of MMA.
According to press releases from both promotions, the deal is to help Invicta identify the best female talent in the world while simultaneously assist SFL in expanding their reach by hitting more demographics.
SFL currently lists 17 women under contract on their website. Of those 17 women, four have yet to make their MMA debut. Of the remaining 13, the most recognizable name is Ukrainian kickboxer Lena Ovchynnikova.
Don’t know who she is? That’s OK. She’s 0-2 in the promotion. I fail to see the value she adds to Invicta besides being extremely attractive. And yeah, she gets the “Matt Roth Seal of Approval” for being super attractive. But that doesn’t add to a product.
And it’s not like Invicta has much to offer SFL, either. Sure, they have a fairly deep talent pool of female fighters due to their agreement with JEWELS, but the majority of them aren’t exactly well known in most MMA circles.
There’s also the really important fact that on the three SFL cards promoted to date, only three of the main-card fights involved female fighters, and two of those three fights featured the aforementioned Ovchynnikova.
The fact of the matter is that SFL is about as invested in WMMA as the UFC. They aren’t using female fighters to build their promotion, and the belief that bringing in the women of Invicta will help expansion into other demographics is laughable.
Look, I don’t want to be a negative dude. I hate being negative. But this is the most underwhelming team-up since Spider Man and Howard the Duck got together to take down Status Quo.
Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe. But I seriously doubt it.
