While Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix winner Daniel Cormier still awaits an opponent for the final fight on his contract next month, that doesn’t mean pundits aren’t already thinking about possible superfights for “DC.”
When UFC President Dana White was asked what he thought about a possible matchup between Cormier and UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, he certainly sounded open to the idea.
“That’d be interesting,” White told Fighters Only (transcription via MMA Weekly). “I like it.”
Early last month, Cormier expressed his interest in coaching “The Ultimate Fighter” opposite Jones, eventually leading to a meeting in the Octagon between the two.
“I know a situation that helps out everyone. Give Jon a challenge that he doesn’t get from most guys, and that’s something that I present. Hopefully, him and I get through our next fight. At the beginning of the year, let us coach the next season of The Ultimate Fighter. That gives me time to actually get my weight down, and in the summer time, we fight. How does that sound? I’m throwing it out there right now. Let’s do it.”
Despite developing kidney problems from years of cutting weight as a wrestler, Cormier also left the door open to the fight being contested at light heavyweight instead of heavyweight.
“For the rest of my career, being 33 years old, I want big fights. If I have to cut some weight, then I have to cut some weight. Listen, I think, pound for pound, the best fighter in the world, right now, is Jon Jones. Dana already said he thinks I’d do well at 205. If he offered me a fight down there against Jon Jones, and gave me some time to get the weight off safely, shoot, I’d jump on that in a heartbeat.”
Cormier indicated that for his last fight, an impressive unanimous decision victory over Josh Barnett in May, he was as light as 229 during his training camp.
Given that fact, Cormier believes that he has “options in two weight divisions now.”
Would Cormier vs. Jones provide the spark “The Ultimate Fighter” has lacked in recent seasons? If not, is Cormier vs. Jones a superfight worth booking on its own for 2013?
