Martin Kampmann is a guy who has a lot of interest in the main event of UFC 154. Kampmann will be vying for a UFC title shot against Johny Hendricks in the main event, and is likely to rush backstage to watch Georges St. Pierre and Carlos Condit do battle if he emerges victoriously.
Kampmann spoke to MMA Weekly about how he sees the UFC Welterweight title unification bout going down.
“I used to think GSP would probably get a victory by taking him down and grinding out a decision, but now that it’s closer to the fight, I’m starting to lean towards Carlos picking up the upset. I’m not sure why, but I could see Carlos hitting GSP with some crazy knee or a spinning back fist or something crazy, and pull off the upset,” Kampmann said.
Kampmann also doesn’t fully believe St. Pierre will attempt more risks in his fight with Condit. GSP has been vocal about going away from his safe fighting style in the weeks leading up to his fight with Condit but “The Hitman” isn’t buying it.
“I think GSP might be saying that, but I think he’s still going to try to make it a wrestling fight,” Kampmann said.
Perhaps the most shocking piece of advice Kampmann offered up as to why he’s leaning more towards picking Condit to win is how he feels GSP will react when faced with adversity.
“I could see GSP quitting if he gets hurt, if he gets hit with a good shot, but Condit he’s going to keep going, he’s going to be in the fight till the end,” Kampmann said.
Kampmann should know very well that Condit won’t fade as the rounds go on; he’s the only man to defeat Condit inside the Octagon. However, the win was a close split decision in favor of Kampmann.
