Georges St-Pierre’s 19-month hibernation makes Carlos Condit‘s nine-month period of MMA inactivity seem like a power nap, but according to the UFC interim welterweight champion, he’s every bit as desperate to get the show on the road this November 17.
In a recent interview with Case Keefer of the Las Vegas Sun, Condit declared himself the more zealous of the two combatants.
I’m hungrier. I’m the one that’s been chomping at the bit to get this thing on. I haven’t fought competitively since February. I’ve just been training an[d] sparring and preparing for this opportunity.
It hasn’t helped much that Condit has received a persistent wave of criticism since obtaining the rank of interim titleholder, first for his defensive tactics against Nick Diaz, then for his decision to wait out St-Pierre’s recovery rather than defend his title against a top challenger.
“People are going to talk either way,” said Condit. “It’s making me a little antsy to get in there.”
Condit‘s claims of hunger and anxiousness echo some of those made by St-Pierre, who talked extensively about rediscovering his motivation for the sport during the first installment of the UFC 154 Primetime series.
While both fighters are likely to consider themselves the most eager party, let’s not discount the enthusiasm of MMA fans, who have generated enough excitement to make UFC 154 one of the most highly anticipated events of the year.
If you haven’t circled November 17 on your calendar yet, get out a marker and get to work.
