I can’t remember a televised UFC event that provided fans with more opportunities to get up and get a snack, a drink, actually cook and eat a full meal between fights than did Saturday night’s The Ultimate Fighter 16 finale. If you liked stoppages, then this was the card for you, as all but two fights ended early. One fight even ended before it began.
The card opened with a decision, a decision that earned “Fight of the Night” honors for Tim Elliott and Jared Papazian, and didn’t have another fight go the distance until Colton Smith decisioned Mike Ricci in the second last fight of the evening to earn himself a UFC contract and a Harley Davidson, which he didn’t seem the least bit interested in.
Between those two fights, there were five knockouts/technical knockouts, three submissions and a cancellation.
The cancellation was the Melvin Guillard-versus-Jamie Varner fight, which was scratched and rescheduled for UFC 155 after Varner fell ill backstage.
To end the night, Roy Nelson went out and stopped Matt Mitrione in the first round, the night’s fifth and final first-round stoppage.
All in all, the TUF 16 finale card was a solid event, unless you were in the crowd at the Hard Rock. Then the waiting around between fights may have gotten old.
