MMA legend and longtime UFC veteran “The Axe Murderer” Wanderlei Silva is headed to Bellator MMA. Silva has signed a multi-fight deal with Bellator. The news was first broke byaccording to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

Silva was given a lifetime ban by the NSAC back in May of 2015 because he evaded a drug test in connection with a planned fight against Chael Sonnen at UFC 175 in 2014. Silva appealed the suspension and had been in and out of hearings with the commission since then.

Silva’s case was heard again last month by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. Silva did not appear at the hearing but was represented by his longtime attorney, Ross Goodman. The commission voted to lift the ban and instead suspend Silva for three years.

He is eligible to apply for a license on May 25, 2017, which is when he will be able to fight again in the United States.

Silva (35-12-1-1) is 3-2 in his last five bouts and is coming off a win over Brian Stann in May of 2013 by second round KO.

Bellator confirmed the signing via a press release.

Before Nate Diaz fights Conor McGregor in the UFC 196 main event, watch him dispatch and armbar Japanese MMA legend Takanori Gomi in today’s free fight video.

It’s easy to look back at Nate Diaz vs. Takanori Gomi as a no-brainer win for Nate, but heading into this matchup at UFC 135 on September 24th, 2011, the opening betting lines had both men available at -120 (it did close at -250 in Diaz’s favor). Diaz was coming off back-to-back losses at welterweight to Dong Hyun Kim and Rory MacDonald, while “The Fireball Kid” suffered a guillotine choke loss to Clay Guida.

Of course, PRIDE NEVER DIE and all that, there were a select few who thought Gomi was going to beat Nate. They were very wrong. Diaz thoroughly outstruck a hapless Gomi for almost the entire round before Diaz went from an armbar, a triangle choke, then another armbar, at which point Gomi tapped at 4:27.

You can watch the full video of this fight at the top of the page.

Here’s Brent Brookhouse’s play-by-play of the whole fight:

Nate Diaz vs. Takanori Gomi – Round 1 – Diaz flips out the jab early. Punch from Diaz hurts Gomi and another one lands. Gomi is sticking his head down and flailing with the hook but it just isn’t getting there. Diaz is jus popping him a bit. Body shot by Gomi, now a right hook by Diaz that lands hard to the head of Gomi. Diaz just popping away with his punches and Gomi just looks slow and ineffective. Diaz continuing to hurt Gomi and this is just not good. Gomi with a takedown but Diaz tries to get his back and they’re back to standing and Diaz is landing at will here. Takedown by Gomi again and Diaz transitions to an armbar, now a triangle. Gomi trying to slam his way out. Transition back to armbar by Diaz and that’ll do it as Gomi taps. Nate Diaz wins by submission (armbar), round 1.

And the Bloody Elbow community’s reaction to Diaz’s easy win over Gomi:

Diaz will return to welterweight for a short-notice main event vs. featherweight champion Conor McGregor in the UFC 196 main event on Saturday, March 5th.

Conor McGregor is all about titles and checks. He says it in every interview he does. McGregor first went after the featherweight title and won it in fashion when he knocked Jose Aldo out in seconds at UFC 194.

He then had his sights set on the lightweight title and was supposed to fight Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196. Now, obviously, he won’t be fighting Anjos this Saturday, but rather Nate Diaz in a welterweight bout. McGregor and his coaches have also talked about moving up and taking the welterweight title from Robbie Lawler. McGregor believes he can win any title in the UFC.

Fellow UFC fighter Matt Brown discussed the possibility of McGregor moving up and winning titles in other divisions.

“I can understand them giving it to Conor,” Brown said on the latest Great MMA Debate podcast. “He’s the money man. That makes sense. (Tyron) Woodley, he shouldn’t even be getting a title shot. This guy, he beat Kelvin Gastelum, and he didn’t even beat Carlos Condit. His last fight was Gastelum. That’s a (expletive) joke. He’s just a business man. Just trying to play the business and not actually fight and earn it like other people are.

“If Conor beats Nate, there’s no reason he shouldn’t be able to fight for whatever title he wants. He’s the money man. I wish that it wasn’t the truth. Floyd (Mayweather) could go fight any weight he wants and fight any guy he wants, and Conor’s in the same boat. That’s where the money is,” Brown said.

“There’s no reason not to give him the money fights. I guarantee (Robbie) Lawler would rather fight Conor and break out the red panties.”

Much of the video coverage for this weekend’s (Sat., March 5, 2016) blockbuster UFC 196 has been understandably focused on star featherweight champion Conor McGregor, but recently, a video surfaced of his opponent Nate Diaz that may or may not be a telling prognostication for the short notice bout.

In the short spot that mainly focuses on Diaz’ training from MMA Uncensored, the popular Stockton slugger can be seen admitting that he ‘might get worked’ by the powerful Irish champion. While that’s an obvious possibility given the timing and odds of the heated affair, it’s also quite odd to hear the normally standoffish Diaz say such a thing.

Watch it here and decide if it’ll have any impact on the fight:

Dana White reveals Conor McGregor asked to fight Nate Diaz at 170 pounds

UFC President Dana White suggested that Conor McGregor was the one to insist on a welterweight match-up against Nate Diaz.

Although Conor McGregor is the smaller fighter and a champion of the featherweight weight class, it appears he was the one to suggest a welterweight match-up against Nate Diaz as a UFC 196 replacement.

According to UFC President Dana White, when he suggested a 165-pound match-up against Diaz, McGregor pushed for it to take place at welterweight.

“The fight is supposed to be at 155,” White told MMAJunkie.com. “Nate says he wants it at 165. I said, ‘No, this kid is moving up from 145 to 155. You told me you could make 155. You’ve got to make 155.’ He can’t make 155, so I said, ‘Let’s do 160.’ He can’t do 160, so I tell Conor, ‘He can’t do 160 pounds. He wants to do 165 pounds.’ Conor says, ‘You tell him it’s 170.’

“So now we have a welterweight bout. Conor McGregor is moving from 145 pounds to 170 pounds to fight Nate Diaz.”

Several fighters threw their name in the hat to challenge McGregor at UFC 196, including Khabib Nurmagomedov, Tony Ferguson but the opponents that the UFC was potentially after like Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo were unavailable for the short-notice bout.

UFC 196 takes place March 5th in Las Vegas Nevada, A bantamweight title fight between Holly Holm and Miesha Tate will serve as the evening’s co-main event.
