Nate Diaz was a last-minute add to face Conor McGregor in Saturday’s UFC 196 in Las Vegas, but it still may result in one of the largest buys in UFC history.
UFC owner Dana White is expecting a gate of $7.6 million, which would be the third-highest in the company’s history, per Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com.
The McGregor-Diaz bout would trail only UFC 194 McGregor’s fight against Jose Aldo on Dec. 12, and UFC 129, which featured Georges St-Pierre and Jake Shields as the main event in Toronto, according to the UFC (via Robby Kalland of CBS Sports).
If that figure stands, it would also become the second-highest gate in Nevada history when the two meet inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena. What’s more, the top three fights will have featured McGregor, per the Nevada State Athletic Commission, with the top fight being McGregor-Aldo reeling in just over $10 million. UFC 189, highlighted by McGregor and Chad Mendes totaled $6.9 million, per the NSAC.
Diaz replaced Rafael Dos Anjos on Feb. 23 in the fight against McGregor, and the buildup has been intense. That’s the main reason why this fight is drawing in so much money, but it’s also because this lightweight fight could be a strong candidate for Match of the Year, as it’s a matchup between two of the UFC’s biggest names.

Break out your best Dr. Evil voice because the disclosed purse for mixed martial arts (MMA) sensation Conor McGregor at UFC 196 is an estimated $1 million, according to the Nevada State Athletic Commission (as reported by ESPN).
McGregor, 19-2, talks a lot about how much he likes the color of money and right about now he must be seeing all green. The figure is the first $1 million disclosed purse in UFC history.
But wait … there’s more.
McGregor will make a lot more than that in his appearance at UFC 196, as the reported figure doesn’t include his pay-per-view (PPV) bonuses, sponsorship deals or any potential fight night bonuses from UFC.
With a 13-second performance at UFC 194 and an estimated 1.2 million pay-per-view buys, McGregor shattered Ronda Rousey’s earnings per second mark. He also took home a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award that event for the stunning knockout.
McGregor has told other media this week he expects to make north of $10 million. Not bad, considering he’s not even fighting his original opponent. For the sake of comparison, McGregor reportedly banked $8 million total for his 13-second knockout of Jose Aldo a few months ago (details).
Nonetheless, according to ESPN, his UFC 196 purse doesn’t include a win bonus.
As for Diaz, much as McGregor liked to say during the press conferences, he’s now quite a bit richer with a straight $500,000 purse to show (no win bonus). So, 13 seconds or 1,500 seconds, he makes the same amount of money.
That purse is equal to what women’s Bantamweight champion Holly Holm will earn, a stratospherically higher number than Miesha tate, who will earn $46,000 for showing up on fight night, and double that if she pulls off the upset.

Bellator 151: “Warren vs. Caldwell” took place tonight (Fri., Mar. 4, 2016) from inside WinStar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla., and streaming live on Spike TV.
The main event featured a Bantamweight war between two highly skilled and decorated wrestlers — “The Baddest Man on the Planet” Joe Warren and “The Wolf” Darrion Caldwell.
Who staked their claim to the top of the 135 pound rankings and a potential future title shot?
Caldwell made it look surprisingly easy. He took Warren down 10 seconds into the fight, flipped him head over heels with a suplex, took the back at the three minute mark and submitted Joe Warren without the tap at 3:23. He did a backflip to celebrate improving to 9-0.
Caldwell spoke to Jimmy Smith about his performance after the fight.
“It felt good. I felt right at home. I’d like to thank all my sponsors, my coaches, all my teammates. Big win for us tonight. Marcos Galvao — you’re a pussy!!”
Elsewhere on the card, Fernando Gonzalez put his four fight winning streak in MMA (not including kickboxing) on the line in a Welterweight tilt against the debuting Gilbert Smith. Smith vacated his RFA title to be a late replacement for Michael Page.
Did Smith make a statement in his debut or did Gonzalez make it five in a row?
Both men had their moments to shine in the first round. Gonzalez made Smith pay for takedown attempts with shots to the head and ribs while sprawling, coming the closest to a finish with a tight guillotine choke. However, Smith did get several takedowns and was on top pounding Gonzalez as the round ended.
Smith changed the narrative in the second with multiple takedowns that stifled any possible offense for Gonzalez. Even though Smith scored more takedowns in the third, Gonzalez did enough damage to earn a split decision 28-29 and 29-28 X2.
Another key ranking battle to define a weight class came as Goiti Yamauchi went to war with Bubba Jenkins. Both have been on win streaks that put them on the verge of a title shot before, only to pull up short at the finish line.
Did one man move a step closer to facing Daniel Straus here?
Yamauchi completely dominated the first round, riding Jenkins’ back with both hooks in, constantly searching for a rear naked choke while boxing Jenkins’ left ear. Jenkins dug deep into his wrestling background for takedowns and held Yamauchi down through rounds two and three, avoiding multiple submission attempts.
All three judges saw it in favor of Bubba Jenkins — 29-28, 30-27 and 29-27.
Jenkins spoke to Jimmy Smith after the fight while wearing a fly hat and shades.
“I was thinking that I was in trouble twice. He had a pretty deep choke. I mean it was on my jaw, so it wasn’t really on my neck but it still had a lot of pressure on it – he’s a really good submisisonist. And that armbar I felt like I could get out but I didn’t want to hesitate there so I tried to hammerfist a little bit. This puts me at the top man. Everybody knows I lost to Georgi Karakhanyan so I’d like to see him. I’m the hit man. You put that name on the line I’ll go get that ass, that cash, or that belt.”
The opening contest on Spike TV was a Bantamweight battle between Joe Taimanglo and Sirwan Kakai. Taimanglo came closer to finishing in the first round with several chokes, Kakai came closer to winning in the third with takedowns, and the second was a total coin flip where nothing happened.
The judges ultimately decided that the winner of R2 and the fight was Joe Taimanglo – 29-28 times three.

For his UFC 196 main event with Nate Diaz, Conor McGregor is slated to take home one million dollars as his disclosed purse — the largest purse in UFC history.
Despite a super-fight with lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos falling apart, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor will make history this weekend after all. He is set to meet Nate Diaz in a highly anticipated welterweight bout at UFC 196 and will become the first ever UFC fighter to make $1,000,000 in a disclosed purse (no win bonus). ESPN’s Brett Okamoto first reported the news. The article also notes that McGregor told CNBC that he would make in excess of $10 million just for this fight.
The purses for UFC 196, disclosed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), do not include other earnings including pay-per-view points (which McGregor is receiving), Reebok sponsorship money, post-fight bonuses, “locker room” bonuses, etc.
Also on the card in the evening’s co-main event, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm defends her belt for the first time against Miesha Tate. The Preacher’s Daughter’s purse is $500,000 to show with no win bonus, and Cupcake’s purse is $46,000 to show/$46,000 to win. She received $28,000/$28,000 in her title loss to Ronda Rousey at UFC 168.
UFC 196 takes place live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, March 5.
