YouTuber Jake Paul surprised the prizefighting world in early January when he announced his signing with PFL. “The Problem Child,” who’s been criticized for the opponents he’s chosen for his boxing bouts, has so far garnered some respect from the MMA community.

Former UFC title contender Kenny Florian, for one, is giving the 26-year-old the credit.

“I can see that he’s already training, I know that,” Florian recently told MMA Fighting. “I’m not a huge fan of the YouTuber fights and this and that but I have come to respect Jake Paul and what he’s been doing. This is a guy who does not need to fight. He’s already a millionaire. He does a lot of other stuff.

“For him to go in there, train hard, prepare for these boxing fights, he’s picking the right fights, clearly an intelligent guy. He’s making the right decisions of who he fights.

“He’s performing. He’s showing that he is dangerous. Now he wants to try his hand at mixed martial arts. I love it.”

For Florian, Paul’s willingness to take on the more arduous challenges of MMA competition is something worth respecting.

“There’s so much to the game when you’re talking about all the different skills he needs to have. The weight cutting, the nutrition, the strength and conditioning. There is so much to do when preparing for a mixed martial arts contest. He will find out about that very soon.

“I think that you’ve got to give him credit for wanting to do this. We haven’t seen it yet but he has followed through on a lot of the things he said he would do. I’m curious to see how it all goes down.”

Paul’s PFL debut has yet to be finalized. Right now, he’s preparing for a boxing match with Tommy Fury, which is set to happen on February 26th in Saudi Arabia.

Former featherweight champion Jose Aldo was in a big hurry to bail on his UFC commitments because the Brazilian had bigger fish to fry in the world of boxing, but I don’t think anyone could have predicted a whopper like this one.

Turns out “Junior” is currently in “advanced” negotiations to throw hands with undefeated boxing icon Floyd Mayweather Jr. at some point later this year in Abu Dhabi.

“Negotiations are really advanced,” longtime manager Andre Pederneiras told Sherdog.com. “We hope to have the contract signed before Aldo’s next fight with Jeremy Stephens on April 1. We don’t have a month decided yet but we already know that the fight will take place in Abu Dhabi.”

A potential Mayweather fight will table the previously-discussed showdown against Brazilian boxing icon Acelino “Popo” Freitas … for now.

“We have great respect for Popo, who is a great national idol, and for everything he represents for Brazilian boxing,” Pederneiras continued. “But as a manager I have to look out for the best interests of my athlete, and this fight with Mayweather is huge. Today we have something much bigger to negotiate, but who knows if in the future this matchup happens.”

Mayweather, 45, will continue his exhibition boxing tour against television reality star Aaron Chalmers on Feb. 25 in London. As for Aldo, 39, he made his “sweet science” debut opposite Emmanuel Zambrano earlier this month and will rematch fellow UFC export Jeremy Stephens for Gamebred Boxing in April.

A loss for either combatant could put an end to their “advanced” negotiations.

There were some huge highlights from the UFC’s return to Paris this past weekend but none caught the eye as much as the main card opener.

Fares Ziam has continued to improve during his time on the roster but on home soil, he secured his biggest win and highlight to date.

The French fighter was dominant against Matt Frevola but sealed his fourth consecutive win in the lightweight division with a devastating knee.

Frevola knew that he needed to try and make something big happen to turn the fight around and as a result, was knocked out inside the Accor Arena.

Daniel Cormier Says He Would Prefer What Happened To Matt Frevola Over Decision Verdict

In their recap of the weekend’s action, Daniel Cormier had a bold take on this fight during the latest episode of ESPN MMA’s Good Guy / Bad Guy with Chael Sonnen.

“DC” made a point to say that he likes when corners are honest with their fighters about how the fight is going, which is a fair observation to make regarding this bout.

“Every time a guy’s losing two rounds to zero Chael and sometimes the coach goes, ‘Oh it might be one-to-one, it’s very close.’ And then there’s the other coach that goes, ‘You’re down two, we got to finish this guy.’ And I’m like, that’s the coach I love. I love that he tells his guy the truth.”

However, where some people may disagree with Cormier’s approach is him stating that he would prefer what happened in this fight over Frevola losing the third round and therefore the decision.

“I prefer what happened to Frevola than him going out there and just losing by decision and really not showing no oomph.”

Of course, showing desire to go out there and pull off the win is important but that also can lead to significant damage, like what happened with Frevola.

He did try to go out there and make a big impact in the third and final round but as a result, he was knocked out cold rather than being on the wrong end of a decision.

“Leaves openings, that happens, it is what it is, people get knocked out but you give yourself an opportunity because we have seen on so many different occasions where the guy overcomes and wins a third period to win the fight.”
