Israel Adesanya is determined to get the job done in combat sports fight No. 4 against Alex Pereira.

UFC 281 in Nov. 2022 was Adesanya’s last night as UFC Middleweight champion, falling short via a fifth-round technical knockout against Brazil’s Pereira (watch highlights). It was Adesanya’s first defeat in the 185-pound weight class as a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, but his third overall against Pereira, including kickboxing contests.

On April 8, 2023, in Miami, Florida as UFC 287’s main event, they run it back once more.

“I’ve never not been motivated to fight this guy, but for this one I’ve put the pressure on myself,” Adesanya said in a UFC 284 fight night scrum (h/t MMA Fighting). “Like, f—k the belt, f—k everything else. I have to beat this guy, so that’s my motivation, just beating him. Like I said, they can say whatever they want, it’s 1-0 or 3-0, I don’t keep score, I settle them and I just need one and I’m going to get it done.”

Adesanya first lost to Pereira via a 2016 unanimous decision before a brutal third-round knockout one year later. Several spectators felt the first encounter’s decision was unjust, arguing Adesanya should have won, whereas he was arguably winning up until the knockout in the rematch, too. In their first MMA fight, that was also the case.

“Just keep the same energy because I’m always beating him until I’m not,” Adesanya said when asked about potential adjustments. “So, I’m just going to make sure I keep beating him the whole way through.

“I go in there and I don’t overthink,” he concluded. “I’m not gun shy. I go in there and I trade with people, especially with him as well, so expect me to do what I do. Like I said, I have to talk because you guys want me to talk, but say less and I’ll do more. I promise you I’ll do more in this fight.”

Khalil Rountree has made it clear that he intends to stand and strike with Alex Pereira in the main event of UFC 307.

The light heavyweight title challenger has won four of his last five fights via knockout, and is certainly capable of striking with anyone in the division.

However, “Poatan” is a whole different beast when it comes to the stand-up game thanks to his incredible career in kickboxing before he made the switch to MMA.

Rountree’s coach John Wood also stated that they intend to strike in Salt Lake City because that’s where they will get the best out of his student’s skill set, rather than trying to change his approach because of the opponent that’s in front of them.

Pereira Says He Won’t Be Convinced Unless Rountree Puts His Money Where His Mouth Is

Despite this clear statement from his opponent, Pereira isn’t convinced that Rountree will stick by his word once they meet inside the Octagon.

The champion is so effective on the feet that even when he faces fellow strikers, they often divert to using grappling as a plan B.

Pereira commented on this during a recent interview with Kevin Iole before fight week.

Through his coach, Plinio Cruz, “Poatan” suggested a wager that would give him confidence in Rountree’s pre-fight assertion that he will keep the fight on the feet.

“Honestly bro, everybody that said that [they will keep the fight standing] before ended up shooting a takedown on this guy so it’s hard to believe. Alex said that the only way that he’ll believe [is] if Khalil go out in public and say, ‘I promise, I promise that I’m not going to shoot a takedown on this guy and if I do, I’m going to donate a percentage of my purse for charity.’ Then Alex will believe him and say let’s bang.”

Despite losing the main event of UFC 284, Alexander Volkanovski is still the P4P kingpin.

While UFC 284 featured one of the most technically proficient fights ever between the top two P4P fighters in the promotion, not much changed in terms of the rankings.

Alex Volkanovski came up just short in the main event, dropping a close decision to Islam Makhachev that a lot of people think he actually won. He didn’t get his hand raised, but his efforts a division up led the rankings panel in the number one spot on the pound-for-pound list – which is the right call for me.

Other than that, Yair Rodriguez is now the interim featherweight champion and likely has a date with Volk next. Jack Della Maddalena made the rankings list for the fights time. And…not much else.

Here’s a look at the changes this week.

Men’s P4P – Volk still on top, Makhachev is still at two. Jon Jones moved up a spot to ten now that he has a fight booked, bumping Jiri Prochazka to 11. Max Holloway re-enters at 15.

Heavyweight – Serghei Spivac and Alexander Volkov flip-flopped the seven and eight spots. Marcin Tybura is up one to 11, bumping Derrick Lewis to 12.

Light Heavyweight – Ryan Spann moved up into a tie for the eight spot with Volkan Oezdemir.

Middleweight – No changes.

Welterweight – Neil Magny rises one to 12, dropping Michael Chiesa to 13. Della Maddalena enters the rankings for the first time at 14 following another big win. Michel Pereira is down one to 15.

Lightweight – No changes.

Featherweight – New interim champ. That bumps Holloway to the two spot.

Bantamweight – No changes.

Flyweight – No changes.

Women’s P4P – No changes.

Women’s Bantamweight – No changes.

Women’s Flyweight – No changes.

Women’s Strawweight – No changes.

Renato Moicano’s dominant victory in the main event of UFC Paris this past weekend was made even more impressive by some news that came out in the aftermath.

Kevin Iole shared images of a gruesome shoulder injury that the Brazilian lightweight contender had suffered, as the journalist understood, in the second round against Benoît Saint-Denis.

Moicano, however, later clarified that this was the result of an injury that he had suffered during his training camp, 3 weeks before the fight.

He refused to pull out of the UFC Paris main event and as a result, would end up earning his fourth consecutive win at 155 pounds.

“I hurt my shoulder 3 weeks ago… but I couldn’t pull out of a main event… thank you my team for helping me training like that e get me ready for the fight”

As the x-ray clearly shows, Moicano fought Saint-Denis with a cleanly broken shoulder bone, that jutted out out of skin.

MMA Fans React To Renato Moicano’s Injury Details

MMA fans were already quick to shower Moicano with praise following his devastating display in the French capital.

After taking Saint Denis down early in the fight, he earned a 10-8 round across all three scorecards due to some ruthless ground and pound that led to his opponent wearing significant damage on his face.

The fight was then stopped at the end of the second round after the doctor declared that the Frenchman couldn’t see out of one eye.

On social media, MMA fans reacted to Moicano revealing more details about his injury:

“Moicano’s stock is massively up after last night.”

“Savage. That’s no bs injury neither. Who was the real God of war last night #easymoney

“Mcgregor pulled out for a pinky toe yall”

“I had the same injury… I couldn’t even sleep at night because the pain was too much… idk how he did this against a super tough opponent”

“You hear that? I don’t want to ever hear BSD’s staph excuse again”

“Damn is this why he started to slow down a bit? $$$Moicano”

“When Moicano Wants Money, Moicano is invincible”

“Benoit being like ‘I can see out of my left one’ is SAVAGE”

Mateusz Gamrot is back.

FanSided confirmed today (Tues., Feb. 14, 2023) that the No. 7-ranked Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight contender, Gamrot, is stepping in to replace the recently injured Dan Hooker against Jalin Turner at UFC 285 on March 5, 2023, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The short-notice bout will be Gamrot’s first appearance since suffering a unanimous decision setback against Beneil Dariush at UFC 280 in Oct. 2022. Gamrot rode a four-fight winning streak before the loss.

Turner will have to adjust his preparations from two extremely different styles in Hooker and Gamrot. Hooker, who broke his hand preparing for the clash, is primarily a striker who can land lethal blows from distance. Gamrot, on the other hand, provides a tactical overall approach with his game and a willingness to fight anywhere the action can go. A Turner win would launch him right into the top contender mix, extending his winning streak to six straight and presumably stealing Gamrot’s spot in the rankings.

The current 14-fight UFC 285 lineup can be seen here.

  • 265lbs.: Jon Jones vs. Ciryl Gane
  • 125lbs.: (C)Valentina Shevchenko vs. Alexa Grasso
