T.J. Dillashaw distances himself from retirement following UFC 280 loss: ‘There’s no way I go out like that’

T.J. Dillashaw

Former two-time undisputed UFC bantamweight champion, T.J. Dillashaw has insisted he will not be calling time on his professional mixed martial arts career, despite suffering a one-sided second round ground strikes TKO loss to division champion, Aljamain Sterling at UFC 280 last weekend.

Angels Camp veteran, Dillashaw co-headlined the promotion’s pay-per-view event against Uniondale native, Sterling, attempting to become the first three-time bantamweight titleholder in the promotion’s antiquity.

However, en route to his eventual second round ground strikes TKO loss to Sterling, T.J. Dillashaw twice suffered a dislocation to his left shoulder – detailing during his post-fight interview with UFC color commentator, Daniel Cormier how he had entered the fight with the pre-existing injury.

Preparing for the championship battle since the beginning of May this year, Dillashaw claimed that at the end of April, he initially suffered the injury, before dislocating his shoulder up to 20 separate times throughout his camp.

Informing referee, Marc Goddard that his shoulder would likely dislocate during the fight at some stage, Dillashaw was allowed to compete regardless, urging Goddard to allow him continue to compete even if he suffered dislocation inside the Octagon.

Tipped to weigh up his future in the sport given his age and championship challenge loss, T.J. Dillashaw, who underwent reconstructive surgery to address a knee injury suffered in his split decision win over Cory Sandhagen in July of last year, insisted he would not be bowing out of the sport in that fashion.

“Sparring was f*cking awesome,” T.J. Dillashaw told ESPN post-UFC 280. “I was doing great in camp against high-level guys, The Juan Archuletas, the Cub Swansons, guys we were bringing in. I was on point, man. I really was looking really good. I was in insane shape. Because of the shoulder situation, I had been working harder on my physical therapy and working on strengthening up my shoulder.”

“The way I felt and the things that were going on, obviously it got worse the closer I got to the fight, but man, I was on point – because of me having one arm and that changed my game plan up, but I was so focused on the combos I can hit with my right hand and kicks that I felt amazing.”

T.J. Dillashaw plans triumphant return from shoulder injury

Undergoing surgical procedures to address injuries to both shoulders during his time away from the Octagon between 2019 and last year, Dillashaw is expected to go under the knife again – likely sidelining him for a period of a year or more.

“I don’t feel that my ability has gone anywhere, maybe a little bit of want,” T.J. Dillashaw explained. “This sport is a tough one, and then all the bullsh*t I go through here and there kills a little bit of the fire, but I think my competitive edge will always drive me. So I’m not done. You guys will see me again. There’s no way I’d go out like that, and if I come back, I’ll get back to the top.” (Transcribed by Yahoo! Sports)

Joe Rogan thinks the judges got it wrong at UFC 280.

Joe Rogan thinks Sean O’Malley fought a great fight against Petr Yan at UFC 280 but that it shouldn’t have been enough to get him the victory.

O’Malley won a controversial split decision over Yan after a grueling three-round contest at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi last weekend. Both men got dropped and almost finished but somehow made it to the final bell, with the bout earning Fight of the Night honors and ‘Sugar’ inserting himself into title contention much to the dismay of his critics.

Despite O’Malley outlanding Yan in significant strikes 84 to 58, many fans feel the latter should have been awarded the victory due to his advantage on the ground and in takedowns. ‘No Mercy’ landed 6 out of 13 takedowns and accumulated over 5 minutes of ground control.

Rogan shares the sentiment that Yan should have won but believes the problem lies in how takedowns are scored and what value they ought to have if no damage is inflicted on the ground.

“A lot of people were shocked [at the decision],” Rogan said on a recent episode of his podcast (h/t BJPenn.com). “There’s a video of Khabib [Nurmagomedov] watching the decision and Khabib is like, ‘How, how did he win? How?’… He was certainly in the fight against Petr Yan. He was a former champion, one of the best in the division, by far the number-one contender. It was a very close fight, and he definitely hurt Petr on multiple occasions, caught him with that big knee, and rocked him.”

“The question is, how much is the takedown worth, how much is control worth?” he added. “Takedowns without damage, what is that valued? I’m not denying that I thought Petr Yan won, because I did think he won at the end of it… One of the problems is that I feel we’re very limited by this 10-9 scoring system… I don’t think it’s a good system for MMA.”

Despite the backlash, O’Malley maintains that he ‘def won’ won the fight and that the proof can be found on his MMA record (16-1-1 NC MMA, 8-1-1 NC UFC). He is currently #1 in the UFC bantamweight rankings.

Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre was recently added to the Jake Paul vs. Anderson Silva pay-per-view (PPV) boxing event, scheduled for this Sat. night (Oct. 29, 2022) at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. “Rush” will serve as the “official co-host,” according to event organizers.

“Welcome to the show legend Georges St-Pierre,” Paul wrote on Twitter. “Appreciate you for co-hosting.”

St-Pierre, 41, was last seen capturing the middleweight title from Michael Bisping at UFC 217 in Nov. 2017, his one and only appearance since hastily retiring from MMA back in Dec. 2013. I’m not sure what insight “Rush” can provide as co-host since he’s not a boxer and never fought Anderson Silva, despite the promotion’s best efforts.

I guess it beats having a horse in the booth.

In addition to the Paul vs. Silva cruiserweight headliner, the five-fight PPV lineup includes a fan-friendly co-main event pitting former UFC middleweight Uriah Hall against heavy-handed NFL import Le’Veon Bell, as well as a bantamweight contenders battle between Alexandro Santiago and Antonio Nieves.

Alexander Volkanovski expects Islam Makhachev to ‘easily break’ if he cannot land takedowns in UFC 284 fight

Expected to share the Octagon at UFC 284 next February in Perth, Australia – reigning featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski, and newly minted lightweight titleholder, Islam Makhachev are widely touted to compete for the summit of the promotion’s pound-for-pound rankings.

Clinching the undisputed lightweight crown last weekend at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi, UAE, Makhachev managed to land a second round submission win over former undisputed division best, Charles Oliveira, dispatching the Brazilian with a taut arm-triangle submission success.

For Volkanovski, the New South Wales favorite entered the Octagon following the former’s submission win, setting up a February clash in his home land,  in a champion versus champion outing.

Scoring a quartet of successful title defenses a division lower at featherweight, Alexander Volkanovski defeated former champion, Max Holloway two times as champion, as well as knocking back both Brian Ortega, and South Korean veteran, Chan Sung Jung.

Alexander Volkanovski expects Islam Makhachev to wilt in UFC 284 clash

Touting his own takedown defense and ability to return to his feet if he does end up on the canvas against the revered grappler, Makhachev, Volkanovski claimed that he was excited to see how demoralized the Dagestan native would become if he was unable to land a series of takedowns.

“I feel like he’s (Islam Makhahcev) sort of underestimating me in a sense,” Alexander Volkanovski said during an interview with Submission Radio. “Where I’m just a featherweight, a small featherweight, how am I gonna be able to handle his strength? You know what I mean? That’s how he’s looking at it. Which is gonna be a shock when we are in that Octagon.”

“…Then when he tries to grab a hold of me, realizes, ‘Oh, sh*t, this short guy isn’t as weak as I thought, struggles to get me down.” Alexander Volkanovski explained. “Or even if he does get me down, I get straight back up. Mentally, he’s breaking. This stuff’s gonna get to him, cause this is not what he expected. He’s like, how is this little fella doing this? And I guarantee you I will. So, let’s see how he deals with that. … That’s the question that I wanna know. I want to see how easily he breaks when things don’t go to plan.”

In his most recent Octagon walk, Volkanovski turned in a third career win over the aforementioned Hawaii favorite, Holloway – besting the former titleholder over the course of five rounds in the co-main event of UFC 277 back in July during International Fight Week.
