Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Julianna Peña believes she has something that most of her peers do not.
Peña, who is currently sat at #1 in the 135-pound rankings, is expected to serve as the first challenger in longtime rival Raquel Pennington’s maiden title defense following “Rocky’s” capturing of the then-vacant belt at UFC 297 this past January.
“The Venezuelan Vixen” is in pursuit of two-time champ status, having briefly held the gold after a monumental upset against Amanda Nunes at UFC 269 in December 2022. The ex-bantawmeight queen was originally set for a chance to regain the crown in a trilogy fight with Amanda Nunes last June, almost a year on from the Brazilian’s emphatic victory in their rematch.
But after injury kept her out of both that fight and the championship joust that followed Nunes’ retirement, Peña’s layoff is fast approaching the two-year mark. Nevertheless, she remains firmly in the title conversation and has no doubt about what she sees as an inevitable return to top spot.
Peña has continued to tout her perceived superiority over the rest of the bantamweight roster, and she recently warned Pennington about the kind of fighter she’ll be facing later this year…
Peña ‘Preparing’ To Give Her Life In Every Fight
During an interview with MMA Crazy at UFC X doing International Fight Week, Peña looked ahead to her long-awaited comeback and the matchup that is reportedly set to stage it this October.
“The Venezuelan Vixen” noted that nothing will change in terms of how she approaches her expected title clash with Pennington. No matter who shares the cage with, Peña claims to have a ‘fight to the death’ attitude.
“I go into fights the same way mentally. Preparing for literally giving my entire life, and if I have to die in there, I’m gonna die in there,” Peña said. “I think that it doesn’t matter who stands across from me, I’m always going to approach it the same. I’m going to fight to the death. That, to me, is kind of what separates me from other fighters I feel like. I’m literally going to give my entire life, it doesn’t matter who stands across from me. I am my biggest opponent.”
Peña will look to prove as much should it be required against Pennington down the line. While a date for their likely fight remains unconfirmed, current talk is placing the pair on a pay-per-view card rumored for Salt Lake City in October.
Whether in Utah or at an event elsewhere this year, the former champion will be hoping to announce her return in style and make a firm statement to the division’s current crop of top contenders.

Jared Gordon smells an opportunity.
The UFC lightweight veteran insists he was “robbed” by the cageside judges after losing to Paddy Pimblett at the UFC 282 pay-per-view (PPV) event last weekend in Las Vegas, and is now petitioning “The Baddy” — along with head sponsor Dave Portnoy of Barstool Sports — to commit to a 155-pound rematch at UFC 286 next March in London.
“With all the controversy with our fight I’d love to run it back with you in London,” Gordon wrote on social media. “I have no ill will towards you, as a matter of fact I really like you. [Dave Portnoy] maybe we can all work together and between Paddy and I there’s no way we can’t help others and we can beat each other up again in the meantime for everyone’s entertainment! The people want it, and we can settle this on your turf.”
Gordon opened as the +120 (6/5) betting underdog for a potential “Baddy” rematch, against -140 (5/7) for Pimblett, according to BetOnline.ag. Nothing is official at this time but the outspoken scouser is pretty much a lock for any overseas fight card, health permitting. It’s just a question of which direction matchmakers want to go with the Pimblett hype train.
Expect to find out within the next few weeks, if not sooner.

Dricus du Plessis doesn’t think Alex Pereira will hold on to the UFC middleweight title for long.
Coming off the biggest win of his career with a stoppage victory over Darren Till, South Africa’s Dricus du Plessis (18-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) doesn’t think it will be long before he fights for the UFC middleweight title.
In fact, ‘Stillknocks’ anticipates a title shot next year but doesn’t think it will be against current champion Alex Pereira, suggesting ‘Poatan’ loses to former champ Robert Whittaker.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani in a recent interview (h/t MMA Fighting), du Plessis credited Pereira as an ‘amazing fighter’ but thinks his title reign will be short-lived, anticipating ‘Poatan’ loses the belt by the time he fights ‘Izzy or Rob Whittaker’ for the title next year.
“I’d be surprised if I don’t fight for the title [in the next year],” Du Plessis said during a recent appearance on The MMA Hour. “I’d be surprised. I said this year, I would be in the top 10 before the end of the year, and that’s happening. I honestly believe I’ll be in the top three in my next two fights.”
“Probably Izzy or Rob Whittaker,” Du Plessis replied when asked who he thinks will be champion when he fights for the middleweight title. “That’s the two guys I see. I don’t think [Alex Pereira is still champion]. I think Alex is an amazing fighter. I think Robert Whittaker beats him. I honestly think Whittaker can beat Alex.”
Du Plessis then explained why he thinks Whittaker beats Pereira but struggles with Adesanya, suggesting a ‘mental block’ is preventing ‘The Reaper’ from defeating ‘The Last Stylebender’.
“Alex is a big dude,” Du Plessis said. “I saw him again on Saturday. He’s big for the weight, but I do think his style, which is more of a flat-footed style, he punches like a truck and he kicks hard and his striking is really good. I just think when it comes to mixed martial arts as a whole, I think Robert Whittaker has a style to beat Ales Pereira.
“I think Whittaker is struggling with Izzy because maybe a mental block, and Izzy is really good at movement, so it makes it hard to take him down. He’s moving a lot, where I believe with Pereira, he’s a much more stagnant fighter. He stands in one spot with his feet planted, and he hits hard. I think that’s something that Whittaker will be able to take advantage of and take him down, and we saw when he’s on the ground and he’s put on his back, or he’s at the bottom, he’s not that great. I think Whittaker takes him down and TKOs or submits him.”
A rematch between Pereira and Adesanya is expected to take place next year, with du Plessis likely only a couple more wins away from reaching title contention himself. Expect the streaking middleweight to surge into the top ten once the UFC updates its rankings next week.
In the final UFC event of the year, the promotion is set once again to return to the Apex Arena for UFC Fight Night: Cannonier vs. Strickland. A number of fun fights litter this card, with the likes of Arman Tsarukyan, Alex Caceres, Drew Dober, and many more all competing. Join us below for our […]
A number of fun fights litter this card, with the likes of Arman Tsarukyan, Alex Caceres, Drew Dober, and many more all competing.
Join us below for our best bets for this UFC Fight Night card!
Jared Cannonier ML
In the main event of this fight card, we will take the slight underdog in Jared Cannonier.
Cannonier has a distinct power advantage over Strickland, which he pairs with a lethal leg kick game. Strickland will attempt to walk him down, and apply his signature pressure-based approach. But it has only been 4 months since Strickland was viciously KO’d by Alex Pereira, and as we saw recently with Kyle Daukaus, brutal knockouts can carry on into the following fight if the right amount of time to recover is not taken.
Cannonier may not KO Strickland, but we are banking on him to have big round-winning moments, that at the very least will sway the judges in his favor. Cannonier’s ML is priced at 1.92 on Betway.
Arman Tsarukyan by Dec
In the co-main event, Arman Tsarukyan takes on Damir Ismagulov in an extremely high-level lightweight clash.
We are going to take Arman Tsarukyan to win via decision. Ismagulov is a decision machine – having gone the distance in all 5 of his UFC fights. The fight will likely be very competitive, but Tsarukyan just has that special something should be enough to see him pick up the win here.
Finally, we take Amir Albazi and Sergey Morozov both to come out on top in their respective bouts.
Albazi is a top 15 flyweight, who has looked near unstoppable since signing for the UFC. He takes on a short-notice opponent in Alessandro Costa, who is making his UFC debut.
Morozov is a very solid bantamweight with truly dangerous striking, He faces off against Journey Newson, who simply appears to be a step below Morozov in terms of skill and physicality.
