Leon Edwards may have picked up the biggest win of his career at UFC 263 but it didn’t come easy.

‘Rocky’ bossed the majority of his five-round fight against Nate Diaz back in June.

The Englishman was forced to show a ton of heart in the final frame when he was rocked by Diaz.

The Stockton, California native swarmed but was unable to find the finishing blow.

Edwards made it to the final bell and ultimately walked away with a lopsided decision win.

During a recent appearance on The James English podcast, Edwards revealed his mother had a hilarious reaction to seeing him get rocked at UFC 263.

“She’s a proper Jamaican, Jamaican, you know,” Edwards said. “She was watching (the fight) when I got rocked by (Nate) Diaz. When I came back, I was like ‘Mum, what did you do?’. Like what happened when (I was rocked)? She was like ‘I opened the window and started screaming ‘help!’”

Unfortunately, Mrs. Edwards may have to see her son in a few more compromising positions as the fights only get tougher from here on out. ‘Rocky’ is currently riding a long winning streak and appears to be on the cusp of a welterweight title shot. The current 170lb king Kamaru Usman is set to defend his crown against Colby Covington later this year. In the meantime, potential fights between Edwards, Gilbert Burns, and Jorge Masvidal are being discussed.

UFC Vegas 32 certainly delivered. In the main event, Cory Sandhagen and TJ Dillashaw went at it for five rounds with the former bantamweight champion ultimately picking up a split decision win in his long-awaited return to action.

Fight of the Night

In the co-main event, Kyler Phillips and Raulian Paiva went to war. Phillips started the fight well and appeared to be on the brink of taking out his opponent in round one. Amazingly, Paiva survived the early onslaught and rallied to potentially win the next two rounds. As the scorecards were being tallied many expected a rare MMA draw but that wasn’t to be. Ultimately, the judges awarded Paiva the win via majority decision. Phillips can consider himself hard done by. Hopefully, an extra $50,000 in his bank will somewhat soften the blow of this tough loss.

Performance of the Night

Just before that fight, we had an exciting match-up between Darren Elkins and Darrick Minner. In what proved to be a night of comebacks, Elkins arguably picked up the most impressive. The featherweight veteran was dominated in round one and seemed to be on the verge of being stopped by Minner. He somehow managed to survive and quickly turned the tables in round two. Minner appeared to have emptied his tank in the first frame and was defenceless on the floor as Elkins pounded away for the TKO win.

Performance of the Night

The people’s main event saw two highly rated bantamweight prospects square off. Adrian Yanez and Randy Costa entered UFC Vegas 32 with perfect records in the promotion. After a friendly build-up, things quickly got heated inside the Octagon. Costa was landing bombs throughout round one and Yanez was covered in the blood as he went back to his stool at the end of the frame. In another epic comeback, Yanez quickly turned the tables in round two. The now 3-0 UFC fighter ripped to the body and landed a beautiful uppercut to finish the fight and pick up a well-earned $50,000 bonus cheque.

Here’s what you may have missed last night!

Maybe this can partially be blamed on my position writing about combat sports, but sometimes, it feels really easy to overwhelmed by all the crap parts of being a fight fan. Sometimes, the amount of nonsense involved is simply overwhelming.

Endless contract negotiations preventing great fights? Check. Undeserved interim titles wasting the time of athletes and fans alike? Two weeks until UFC 265! Fake bad blood and otherwise ugly fight promotion? Guaranteed for as long as Conor McGregor continues to draw clicks. Weigh misses, inept judges, these goddamn Internet stars making millions …

It’s a bunch of BS.

UFC Vegas 32’s main event even involved a bit of untruth. Cory Sandhagen and TJ Dillashaw are great athletes, but when the promotion is selling Dillashaw’s return from performance enhancing drugs as a comeback story … gross.

Fortunately, the preliminary opener between Adrian Yanez and Randy Costa served as a wonderful palate cleanser. It was simply an excellent, back-and-forth contest between excellent 135-pound prospects.

Let’s take a step back first and look at the build up. Originally, the bout was placed on the undercard. The bout between arguably the two best prospects of the night, both of whom are knockout artists and both riding win streaks, was placed on the preliminary portion of the night.

That’s stupid.

Fortunately, MMA Twitter agreed! There was something of an online rally for the two, arguing that the organization responsible for promoting its athletes should properly promote its athletes. Yanez and Costa helped fuel the fire with a goofy debate about soda and candy (I’m a cereal man myself), as well as their generally amiable interactions.

It worked. Yanez and Costa earned their well-deserved slot as the main card opener, and more people saw one of the best, most impressive fights of the night as a result. The two continued to be quite friendly through weigh-ins, the touch of gloves, the immediate aftermath — everything except the actual bout, which was exceedingly violent.

Costa showed why he has six first-round knockout wins in six victories. The man is a SPRINTER! He came out and blasted Yanez for about three straight minutes, touching him relentlessly with stiff jabs and following up with right hands that landed at a scary rate. It was an impressive display of offense against a man known for his counter punching prowess.

The tide turned, however. Yanez is known for his slickness, but when that wasn’t working, he turned to grit and showed his heart is strong. When Costa began to slow down, Yanez was immediately in position to take control. He began backing the taller man up, sticking him with hard shots.

Now able to put his own offense on display, Yanez showed out. His combinations were brilliant, as Yanez ripped gnarly punches to the mid-section before lining up the fight-finishing uppercut. The end results was a tremendous performance from the victor and a strong showing from the defeated man, surrounded by no needless narrative or annoying antics.

All action, No BS.

Jake Paul

Jake Paul says his team is currently in talks with Conor McGregor’s about a potential fight.

The YouTuber transitioned to boxing in 2020 and has so far picked up three professional wins against extremely low-level opponents in AnEsonGib, Nate Robinson, and Ben Askren.

Since moving into combat sports, Paul has made no secret about his desire to square off against McGregor who has for the most part attempted to distance himself from the internet celebrity – although he hasn’t totally ruled out a potential fight.

The 24-year-old has spent a lot of the last year trying to troll ‘Notorious’ into a fight. Most recently, he dropped 0,000 on a chain that features McGregor immediately after his knockout loss to Dustin Poirier from UFC 257.

In a recent interview with The Heard, Paul spoke with optimism about a potential fight with McGregor.

“I think it will happen. Look, I mean, I’m the money fight for Conor McGregor right now,” Paul said.  There is no other fighter right now who is on a bigger level than me that is calling out Conor McGregor and wants to fight Conor.

“Our team is in touch with his team and there’s talks of it actually happening. And people at first thought I was just joking when I said I wanted to fight him. But now it’s as real as it gets, it’s more real than ever and by the way, if we do fight, I’m going to knock him out.” (Transcribed by SportBible)

To have any hope of securing a lucrative fight with McGregor, Paul must first get by Tyron Woodley on August 29. The former UFC champion is considered by most the first true test of Paul’s short fight career as he is an active fighter who has been competing against the best for more than a decade now.

Do you believe Jake Paul vs. Conor McGregor will ever happen?

Henry Cejudo was not impressed with TJ Dillashaw who returned to the Octagon with a win over Cory Sandhagen at UFC Vegas 32.

Before last night, we hadn’t seen Dillashaw compete since January 2019 when he suffered a first-round knockout loss to Cejudo in a flyweight title fight.

Following the loss, it was revealed that Dillashaw had tested positive for EPO. He was later suspended for two years and stripped of his bantamweight world title.

After serving his lengthy suspension Dillashaw returned to the Octagon against Sandhagen who many believe to be the number one contender at bantamweight.  The pair went back and forth for five rounds before the former 135lb king walked away with a razor-thin split decision victory.

Post-fight, MMA manager, Ali Abdelaziz took to social media to play down Dillashaw’s victory by reminding everyone about his client’s quick win over him.

“I’m sorry @HenryCejudo KO this guy very easy I don’t care what everyone saying,” Abdelaziz wrote on Twitter.

‘Triple C’ was quick to chime in on UFC Vegas 32, claiming he would finish Dillashaw even quicker if they ever rematch.

“Easy money for me! I was generous to give him a 32 second beat down,” Cejudo replied. “I won’t be so generous next time! #bendtheknee”

Cejudo retired from MMA last year after successfully defending his bantamweight title against Dominick Cruz at UFC 249. The 34-year-old has consistently talked up his return to the Octagon ever since and has called out pretty much every significant name from flyweight to featherweight.
