Just moments before Nate Marquardt was to weigh in for his high-profile welterweight debut in the UFC, the MMA community was informed that Marquardt did not clear his medical exams and would not be competing.

Although the public does not have many details, UFC President Dana White said he is disgusted with Nate Marquardt’s actions and that he has been released by the UFC.

Assuming that his release also extends to UFC sister promotion Strikeforce, then the next biggest promotion would be Bellator.

As it turns out, there are actually a lot of good matchups for him there.

Here are the top five.

Before his fight with Charles Oliveira, I honestly had not seen much of Nik Lentz.

Essentially what I knew about him was that he was a boring wrestler who was a bit lucky to earn a decision over Tyson Griffin.

That is definitely not the whole story.

Against Charles Oliveira, Lentz showed that he is a dynamic and aggressive competitor who is willing to scrap with anybody.

The fight earned “fight of the night” and it was certainly deserving of such.

What impresses me even more than Lentz’s skill and competitive fire was how classy he was to be defeated in controversial fashion.

Pretty early in the second round Lentz absorbed a clearly illegal knee to his face and the blow was incredibly damaging.

Most fighters would have mentally retreated and quit. Not Lentz.

Lentz fought like a warrior, but the damage was too much, and he eventually succumbed to a rear-naked choke.

After the fight was called off, Lentz did not seem upset about the obvious foul.

It is one thing to fight bravely against a dangerous opponent like Oliveira, and then a whole other thing to maintain one’s composure and react gracefully and respectfully in the face of injustice.

The outcome is going to be reviewed and there is a strong chance justice will be served with the result being overturned and changed to a “no contest.”

Now that I have seen what Nik Lentz is really all about—I am an undeniable fan.

I take nothing away from Charlie Brenneman’s victory over Rick Story, because he did earn it.

He also received a tiny bit of help from the hometown referee.

For good portions of rounds one and two (the two rounds Brenneman won) Brenneman was working from inside of Rick Story’s Guard.

It was the prototypical example for the argument of whether fights should get stood up or not in certain situations.

Brenneman was moving in such a manner that you could call him “active”, but he was not really able to inflict any damage or trying to advance position.

The referee decided to let him ride out that position for the rest of those two rounds, thus securing those rounds for him.

Now that is pretty much all fine and dandy, by itself. If the referee wants to see the two men work on the ground, then he is the one to make that call.

Unfortunately for Story, the viewers and the sport, the referee contradicted himself in the third round with a horrible stand-up in a situation that clearly benefited Charlie Brenneman.

Once again, the fight had hit the ground, but this time Rick Story was high on top of Brenneman’s back and was working for a kimura.

Many within the fight community consider the guard position “neutral.” Nobody in their right mind would consider the position that Story had Brenneman in, “neutral.”

Story threatening with the kimura submission before the standup was way more threatening than anything Brenneman ever did inside of his guard—yet the referee completely inexplicably stood them up.

If the referee had not stood them up, there is a good chance that Brenneman would have survived the compromising position on his own and still rode the fight out to the unanimous decision victory.

But to see a referee display such bias towards a fighter is a major problem and should not be overlooked.

Total Chaos!

That is pretty much the best way to sum up the UFC welterweight coming off Charlie Brenneman’s upset victory over Rick Story.

Story had a ton of momentum and then cracked the top 10 worldwide rankings a month ago with his victory over Thiago Alves.

Then, due to some insane matchmaking shuffles, Story ends up taking on Brenneman and getting outpointed by the decorated wrestler.

It was not a tremendous surprise based off of the stylistic match-up- but it sure leaves rankings an absolute mess to figure out.

That is why I will go ahead and do it for you. Do not worry. I am right. You’re welcome.

I present the top 10 welterweights in the UFC…. (and if you are wondering, yes, Nick Diaz counts)
