Bellator FC and the UFC are the two MMA promotions that I follow.

Bellator has a dynamic stable of fighters from all different weight classes. Some of these fighters, if given the opportunity, could enter the UFC and make some noise much like the WEC fighters made when they finally arrived.

In the following slides you can see my picks, in no particular order, for Bellator fighters I would like to see fight in the UFC one day.

There is one thing all UFC fighters have in common: they all have a place to train and hone their skills. Many gyms have sprung up over the years, all with good programs and great fighters. Some gyms are better than others. When you’re looking for a gym to train at you have to consider the programs, the coaches and the fighters you train with. Below are my picks for the top five MMA gyms to train at.

UFC 146 Heavyweights: Why We Love Watching the Giants of the Sport

UFC 146 is almost upon us. It is a historic event because the main card is entirely made up of heavyweights. From the raw power of Lavar Johnson, to the dangerous submissions of Frank Mir, to the crisp boxing of Junior Dos Santos, UFC 146 has something for everyone.

This card has more hype behind it than I have seen in a long time. It has even caught the interest of some of my friends who have little interest in the UFC. Some of them are asking about the fight between Mir and Dos Santos. That alone tells me that UFC 146 is going to be something special.

Heavyweight fights are always fan-friendly affairs. Whether it ends in a huge knockout, a TKO or a slick submission, heavyweight fights never cease to excite me. Why are we, the fans, so infatuated with the heavyweights, the titans of the cage?

I believe I have figured it out.

The heavyweights never put on a boring fight. They fight to finish. Each and every one of them has the power to put their opponent’s lights out with a well-placed punch or kick.

This 146 card consists of so many proven finishers, I have been ranting about it for a month.

For starters, you have the heavy-hitting Junior Dos Santos defending his title against submission machine Frank Mir. Cain Velasquez looks to get back into title contention when he meets Antonio Silva, who is making his UFC debut. Fan favourite Roy Nelson throws down with Dave Herman, while undefeated prospects Stipe Miocic and Shane Del Rosario throw leather. In the first fight of the main card, Stefan Struve fights late fill-in Lavar Johnson.

It is obvious that this card is stacked when both Diego Brandao and Edson Barboza are on the prelims. My advice to fans watching the event this Saturday: Don’t blink, because you’re bound to miss something huge!

Bellator Tournaments: Should the UFC Adopt the Style?

The UFC is plagued with a problem. There is only one champion and one top contender. How do you decide who that is? Take for instance the UFC welterweight division right now. With champion Georges St-Pierre sidelined and unable to fight current interim champion, Carlos Condit, who do you give the top contender spot to after the two finally fight? Is it the winner of Jake Ellenberger and Martin Kampmann? What about Johny Hendricks? Nick Diaz when he gets back from his suspension or the ever improving Rory MacDonald?

Enter the Bellator tournament format.

I’m a big fan of both the UFC and Bellator. I think the UFC could take a page from Bellator and implement a tournament format to determine who the top contender is. It’s an easy way to determine who has proven themselves worthy of getting the title shot against the champion.

Bjorn Rebney, Bellator’s CEO, has made a smart decision to put the tournament format in effect. In an interview, he states, “It’s real sports competition. It’s football, baseball, basketball, soccer—every sport we’ve watched since we were kids is competition. You start with a group and then at the end there’s one.”

That sounds like the perfect way to determine who gets a shot at the champ in the UFC. Put all the contenders together and match them up. Winners move on and losers work harder to improve next time. At the end of the tournament, there you have it—your top contender to fight the champion.

There have also been problems with the tournament format. Some fighters don’t like the idea. The champions are sometimes waiting around for a tournament to finish before they defend their title. If the UFC were to adopt this format there would be bugs to work out. It’s a work in progress but a positive one in my opinion.

Rebeny says that the tournament puts the focus where it counts. That is, on winning fights. Rebney states, “All that matters is when that cage door shuts, do you win? I think that’s the purest form of sports.”

I agree with Rebney 100% and I would love to see the UFC give this a try. It would be beneficial for the fans and for the fighters who would know exactly who the top contender is.

UFC Flyweight Champion: Who Gets the Honour of Being Crowned First?

For the longest time, I thought the featherweights and bantamweights were the most exciting fighters to watch in the UFC.

Then, the flyweights came along, and I had to reconsider my opinion. They are fast, exciting and never seem to tire. When the UFC first announced they would be creating a flyweight division, I, along with many fans, didn’t know how to react.

After watching the first event I could say a few things. First, I’ve never seen fighters move that fast before. Second, I desperately want to see more fights like this. And finally, how long did it take Ian McCall to grow that moustache?

Joseph Benavidez put his name in the title mix after a TKO victory against Yasuhiro Urushitani. His victory also sent a message to all other UFC flyweights. Benavidez, whose only two losses were closely contested fights against bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz, is the real deal and has the skills to back it up.

The other flyweight match of the night led to some controversy through a judges scoring error.

This blunder stole a victory from one of the fighters, and it also stole an exciting fourth round for fans. Based on what I saw in the fight, the rematch between Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall should be as exciting as the original fight.

I see McCall utilizing his superior wrestling after stunning Johnson with punches and finishing him with a ground-and-pound TKO victory.

The final for the flyweight belt I predict will be between Joseph Benavidez and Ian McCall.

Both men have power in their fists, excellent wrestling skills and are dangerous submissions. I believe that Joseph Benavidez will win this fight and become the first-ever UFC flyweight champion.

His combo of powerful strikes, wrestling and submissions will be enough to put away McCall for a KO or TKO victory. Benavidez was an elite bantamweight, and at flyweight, he will be a champion.

Junior Dos Santos vs Frank Mir UFC 146 Main Event Breakdown

Let me be the first to say that I was pumped for a heavyweight slugfest between Junior dos Santos and Alistair Overeem. Now that those dreams have been snatched away from me with a suspension to Overeem, the UFC brought in a replacement for the main event.

Frank Mir was already on the card, and frankly, I think he’s a great choice as a replacement. This fight should be competitive and very fan friendly.

Dos Santos has a definite edge in the striking department. He has highlight-reel finishes of Fabricio Werdum, Stefan Struve, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, Gilbert Yvel, Gabriel Gonzaga and Cain Velasquez.

The fighters he didn’t finish, he left battered, bruised and bloody. Just ask Shane Carwin.

Mir is no slouch on the feet, but he isn’t in dos Santos’ league when it comes to boxing.

Ground game, on the other hand, is a different matter. Mir is an animal on the ground with powerful submissions and a killer instinct to boot. If you leave an arm hanging out, Mir will take hold and probably take it home to put in his trophy case.

If you don’t believe me, you can ask Tim Sylvia, Antoni Hardonk and, most recently, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. Dos Santos is a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, so he can hold his own, but if this fight goes to the ground, Mir will win.

It is also worth noting that dos Santos’ only loss is by armbar submission.

Overall, this should be a fun fight to watch. Dos Santos is fighting not only to retain his title, but also to avenge his mentor, Nogueira, after Mir submitted him at UFC 140.

Dos Santos could be a little more emotional in the fight due to that extra pressure. If Mir suspects that dos Santos is fighting emotionally instead of strategically, he could catch him and cause a huge upset.

Never count out Mir because in the UFC anything can happen.

That being said, I think dos Santos will win this fight, but I think Mir will be a lot more competitive than most people give him credit for.

No matter who wins this fight, it should prove to be explosive and exactly what every UFC fan dreams of in a heavyweight title fight.
