As expected, Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva got the nod from the UFC for the Fight of the Night at UFC 117, netting them both an extra $60,000 for their trouble. Silva also pocketed another sixty grand for his triangle choke finish, which was awarded dual Submission of the Night honors along with Matt Hughes, who took home the prize because, as Dana White put it, “I’ve never seen it before.”

Knockout of the Night went to Stefan Struve, who survived a disastrous first round against Christian Morecraft to score a come-from-behind TKO victory early in the second frame of his preliminary bout.

OAKLAND – It’s been a while since my last spectacular fight picking failure, but with UFC 117 just around the corner, Fighter vs. Writer returns with Olympic silver medalist and MMA vet Matt Lindland.

As those of you who have been following this series already know, I have yet to win a single one of these prediction contests. Either that means fighters are all really great at picking fights, or I’m really, really terrible. I choose to think it’s the former, and there’s nothing you can say to convince me otherwise.

Below, check out how Lindland and I see Saturday night’s fights going down.

The Cut List: Who’s Facing Unemployment with a Loss at UFC 117?

You know how you can tell that UFC 117 is a quality fight card from top to bottom? Coming up with candidates for the Cut List was actually a bit of a chore, and not even the kind of chore where you feel a sense of satisfaction once it’s done.

This weekend’s lineup features only one fighter with two consecutive losses, and quite a few who are on significant win streaks. So what gives? Could we be facing the rare UFC event where nobody’s job is on the line? And if so, does this represent a leveling off of unemployment numbers and the sign of economic recovery that the nation has been waiting for? Or is it just an aberration, like that one time when your ne’er-do-well uncle showed up sober at Thanksgiving?

The truth is, we don’t know. But there are still some guys with an outside chance of fighting their way out of job on Saturday, so let’s take a look.

SAN FRANCISCO – When UFC welterweight contender Thiago Alves missed Wednesday’s UFC 117 open workouts to focus on his weight cut, he knew he’d probably set off a minor panic.

“I was expecting that,” Alves told MMA Fighting on Thursday afternoon. “Once you miss weight, it’s the first thing everyone talks about.”

The truth, according to the bulky welterweight who has struggled with making the 170-pound limit in the past, was that his weight cut has proceeded exactly according to plan. Sitting out of the open workouts was no more than a precautionary measure to ensure there were no surprises on the scales later today.

“[The weight cut]’s been easy. It’s one of the easiest times it’s ever been. I just didn’t want to go to the workout and miss a day of working on it, because I wanted to make sure everything was under control and where it should be so I can make it easy on myself. I asked the UFC if I could skip the workout and do some real training, and they let me go. They had so many fighters already, so it was fine.”
