The last time Mousasi (30-3-1) fought for Strikeforce was a year ago when he lost his light heavyweight title to Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal. He fought twice more in 2010 and picked up submission wins over Jake O’Brien and Tatsuya Mizuno. Jardine (17-9-1), who won his last two fights on smaller programs, is stepping in for the injured Mike Kyle.

SAN DIEGO – A fight between Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Dan Henderson and former Pride heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko is being targeted for July or August of 2011, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said, but is still not yet confirmed.

“The date, I would say, is probably late summer,” Coker said after Saturday night’s Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley event. “Some things are still being negotiated.”

The main sticking point, it seems, is the weight that the fight will be contested at. As first reported by SI.com, the two camps seem to be debating either a catchweight bout or a heavyweight fight. The possibility of meeting at the 205-pound light heavyweight limit was quickly ruled out by Emelianenko’s camp, according to Coker.

SAN DIEGO – Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz and challenger Paul Daley began their title fight at the Valley View Casino Center on Saturday night like two men who had no idea that the bout was scheduled for five rounds.

The pace Diaz and Daley set early on made it clear that neither had any intention of going the distance, as both men took turns dropping each other to the mat with blistering punches throughout the first round. While Diaz was able to recover from his early scare, Daley was not. He collapsed to the canvas in the final minute and was quickly finished off by several more right hands from Diaz, bringing a halt to the bout at 4:57 of round one.

“I just come to fight,” Diaz said at the post-fight press conference. “Whatever happens out there happens.”

SAN DIEGO – As the Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Daley post-fight press conference ended, Gegard Mousasi stayed in his seat at the far end of the table, staring blankly at his hands as his coaches stood on either side of him speaking softly.

If you had just happened on the scene, you’d think his fight with Keith Jardine had ended in defeat rather than a majority draw. And, at least in Mousasi’s mind, you’d be partially right.

“I’m disappointed because a lot of people were expecting me to win,” Mousasi said. “I let them down.”
