UFC officials are close to finalizing a deal to add an intriguing featherweight bout to their upcoming UFC Fight Night 92 event in August.

According to MMAFighting.com, a featherweight bout between Cub Swanson and Tatsuya Kawajiri is in the works for the event, which is scheduled to take place in Utah.

Swanson last fought in April, defeating Hacran Dias via unanimous decision, while Kawajiri most recently lost via unanimous decision to Dennis Bermudez in February.

The Swanson-Kawajiri bout is expected to be announced soon for UFC Fight Night 92, which is scheduled to take place on August 6, 2016 at the Vivint Smart Home Arena in Utah.

Dennis Bermudez Defeats Tatsuya Kawajiri, Calls Out BJ Penn & Ricardo Lamas

Two featherweights in the top 15 Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 145-pound rankings did battle inside the Octagon at UFC Fight Night 83. Long Island MMA fighter Dennis Bermudez (15-5) went toe-to-toe with T-Blood’s Tatsuya Kawajiri (35-9-2). Bermudez landed a stiff leg kick, but Kawajiri answered with a spinning back fist. A hook found the mark

A hook found the mark for “The Menace” and he got a hold of “Crusher’s” back. Kawajiri looked to work his way into a dominant position as Bermudez held onto his arm. “Crusher” got Bermudez in a cradle and landed a knee to the body. “The Menace” got back up, but his opponent stuck to him to dumped him back down. The round ended with “Crusher” pressing Bermudez against the fence.

“The Menace” closed the distance and held onto a choke very briefly. Bermudez connected with a right hand in a dominant position. The two battle for control against the fence before “Crusher” broke free. Kawajiri’s failed takedown attempt led to a series of punches landed for “The Menace.” He connected with elbows as his opponent continued to attempt a takedown. The round ended with Bermudez having Kawajiri’s back.

Bermudez pressured Kawajiri immediately and took him down. Like in round two, Kawajiri continued to try taking his opponent down and delivering little offense. “The Menace” landed an uppercut, but slipped from a high kick attempt. Kawajiri went for a choke, but Bermudez easily slipped out. A tired Kawjiri threw out a spinning attack. A leg kick was followed up by a right hook from Bermudez. The final horn sounded as “The Menace” landed some punches in top control.

Bermudez was awarded a unanimous decision win. After the fight, “The Menace” said he would like a rematch with Ricardo Lamas and a bout with BJ Penn. Bermudez lost to Lamas back in Nov. 2014 via guillotine choke in the first round.

Final Result: Dennis Bermudez def. Tatsuya Kawajiri via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Fight Night 69 Highlights/Results: Jedrzejczyk Batters Penne, Kawajiri Smothers Siver, “Mr. Finland” Shines Again + More

(Joanna Champion: The simultaneously most adorable and terrifying woman on the planet, next to Alice from Workaholics.)

Jessica Penne is tough as nails, y’all. Unfortunately for her, Joanna Jedrzejczyk has a bowl of nails for breakfast every morning…without any milk. To describe the women’s strawweight champion as “on point” in her main event scrap over the weekend would be borderline disrespectful — Joanna Champy was Chuck Liddell-esque in her tactical destruction of Penne (Joe), putting the TUF 20 alum’s face through the meat grinder over the course of a third round TKO victory.

While it was evident that Penne was outclassed on the feet from the start and unable to get the fight to the mat thereafter, a credit is due to her for taking everything Jedrzejczyk had to offer and not once backing down. We are often quick to praise a fighter’s heart in scenario’s like the one Penne found herself in, but very rarely do we see someone taking a lickin’ and keep on tickin’ like that. It’s not the highest praise, I know, but Penne will be a staple of this division for a while and have plenty more chances to improve and impress.

In the night’s co-main event, my boy Dennis Siver (aka Denny Seeves) was outmuscled by PRIDE vet Tatsuya Kawajiri en route to a unanimous decision loss, marking his 3rd loss in his past 5 fights overall. Despite some success fending off Kawajiri’s grappling-based attacks in the first round, Siver was simply a step behind “Crusher’s” takedown game in the second and third stanzas. It wasn’t a dominant win for Kawajiri by any means, but enough to earn him his second UFC win in 3 outings.

Elsewhere on the card, Makwan “Mr. Finland” Amirkhani continued his dynamic UFC run, submitting Masio Fullen in less than two minutes and dedicating the performance to his mother in an incredibly touching post-fight interview. There’s no denying that the UFC has found an entertaining, charismatic, and perhaps most importantly, talented guy in Amirkhani, so let’s hope they build him up properly.

Since the UFC hasn’t actually made any highlights from Fight Night 69 available online, we’ve had to resort to other means. But at the risk of compromising our journalistic integrity (LOL!), we’ll keep things brief and this article up by paying tribute to the excellent finishing sequence from the Scott Askham vs. Antônio dos Santos undercard fight. Dat uppercut tho…

Tatsuya Kawajiri Suffers Detached Retina For the Third Time, Out of Action Indefinitely

(Photo via Getty)

Just when we were getting used to having Tatsuya Kawajiri around in the UFC, the Japanese veteran has been sidelined with a detached retina. Kawajiri suffered the injury to his left eye during a recent sparring session, and his date of return is uncertain. This is the third time that “Crusher” has suffered a detached retina in his left eye, following incidents earlier in his career when he was competing for PRIDE and Shooto.

Kawajiri most recently lost a unanimous decision to Clay Guida at the UFC’s Abu Dhabi show in April, which snapped a six-fight win streak. A fight between Kawajiri and Darren Elkins was in the works for UFC Fight Night 52: Hunt vs. Nelson (September 20th; Saitama, Japan), but that’s clearly not happening anymore. We’ll update you when we know more about Kawajiri’s recovery timeline.
