Alas, we’ll never know if Antonio McKee really would have made good on his threat to retire if his MFC lightweight title match against Luciano Azevedo went to decision on Friday. McKee, who’d promised to beat Azevedo like he cheated him at dice, needed just three minutes, 11 seconds to stop the 26-year-old Brazilian, after gashing him open with a pair of nasty right elbows on (where else?) the ground.

Give McKee some credit, he doesn’t look like a boring fighter here. Though this fight is marred by an early low blow by Azevedo, McKee slams him to the mat immediately after the restart — “Boom-shaka-laka!” yells the always understated Michael Schiavello, at that point — and goes to work with punches and elbows. As soon as Azevedo sees his own blood – “Blood is absolutely pissing out!” shouts Schiavello, ever elegant – the fight is pretty much over. After that, it takes McKee an uncharacteristic extra minute on the mic before he starts saying crazy stuff. Then he calls out some UFC guys.

MMA’s pathetic collective bitch session about the current trend of wrestlers kicking everybody’s asses reached its shrill and whiny fever pitch this week. With the UFC considering pulling Jon Fitch’s title shot off the table, Dan Hardy’s hilariously bad anti-wrestling column appearing in the Nottingham World Observer (or whatever it’s called) and people publicly worrying themselves sick about the marketability of Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard, the wrestling store must be all sold out of Haterade.

Add to the list of the aggrieved the already insufferable Shinya Aoki, who tells MMA Fighting.com that – in the wake of his own soul-crushing defeat by Gilbert Melendez and idol BJ Penn’s second straight loss to Edgar – he’s not too down with all this wrestling stuff.

Antonio McKee is just way ahead of his time. At least that’s what Antonio McKee says in the above video with your boy Marcos from FightHubTV.com. In fact, though this interview is ostensibly about McKee’s upcoming MFC lightweight title defense against Luciano Azevedo, much of it is just Antonio McKee explaining why it’s OK for Antonio McKee to do many of the things Antonio McKee does. This includes but is not limited to both his wrestling-based fighting style — which McKee assures us is the wave of the future — and his liberal use of the N-word, which he says we shouldn’t be offended by because … well … it doesn’t offend him

“I’m just the baddest nigger on the planet, you know?” McKee says at about the :55 second mark. “For those black folks that I offend when I use the word nigger, let me explain this right now to you. Nigger is not a bad word to me. Where I come from, nigger is a term of endearment and loyalty and brotherhood … I want to let you know now, this fight here is about putting on a show. So, if you see me out there wearing my monkey suit doing my monkey dance, don’t be tripping, alright?”

OK, we’re not tripping, though McKee’s reasoning about why we shouldn’t trip seems pretty flawed here.

File this under Least Surprising News of the Week: In the wake of getting thoroughly outwrestled by Gray Maynard at UFC 118 last month, Kenny Florian is vowing to make some wholesale changes in his training. Florian says he’s hired a wrestling coach from Boston University to help him with his grappling, so that he won’t get held down en route to a unanimous decision loss again anytime soon.

And frankly, this is a good example of yet another reason why KenFlo is one of the more likable fighters in all of MMA. Rather than taking the Dan Hardy approach — where you respond to your team’s multiple wrestling-based losses by publishing a screed in the local newspaper where you insist that (and, yes, this is an exact quote): “The problem is there’s beginning to be too much wrestling in the UFC Octagon, not too little of it in the (Team Roughouse) gym,” – Florian is opting to actually do something about it, trying to get better and keeping his dream of one day holding a UFC title alive.

Mike Pyle Says He’ll Beat John Hathaway to Spite ‘All of Them Crooked-Teethed Englishmen’

Thanks to his almost uncanny ability to let down in big fights, Mike Pyle has spent most of his 11-year MMA career toiling in relative obscurity. It seems like Pyle is continually mentioned by other fighters as “one of the best” in the gym, but that exceptional skill shrinks away when the cage door slams and the TV lights come on. Case in point: His 2-2 record in the Octagon, which includes losses to both up-and-comer Jake Ellenberger and down-and-outer Brock Larson. But perhaps in advance of his bout with 23-year-old phenom John Hathaway at UFC 120, Pyle has finally found a way to thrust himself into the limelight: The Chael Sonnen way.

Indeed, Pyle looks primed to say a bunch of ridiculous shit leading up to Oct. 16, when he’ll be a short-notice injury replacement for Dong Hyun Kim. With the card set for the O2 Arena in London, Pyle doesn’t plan on making many friends that night.

For a pro fighter, a lot of things seem atypical about Ricardo Romero. First off, as he tells Old Dad in an interview with MMA Fighting on Monday, Romero’s MMA career still plays second fiddle to his day job as an energy derivatives broker on Wall Street. Secondly, he admits he only started training to fight as a way to get over the depression of breaking up with his baby mama. Lastly, and most of interest to us here at the Potato, Romero managed to overcome a laundry list of injuries suffered during his UFC debut in July to defeat Seth Petruzelli by second-round arm bar.

Romero pretty much got the tar beat out of him for the first five-plus minutes of his bout against Petruzelli. Despite a 10-1 record compiled fighting on New Jersey’s independent scene – including victories over some known names like the UFC’s James McSweeney as well as TUF washouts Constantinos Phillippou and Karen Grigoryan  – Romero looked completely unprepared for UFC action. He was “Octagon jitters” personified and his honesty on that subject is something else that is refreshing about the former Rutgers wrestler.
