Isao Kobayashi was one of the few fighters able to make an impression on Wednesday as he choked out 2007 Cage Force GP Champ Artur Oumakhanov in the first round at Pancrase Passion Tour 10. Kobayashi avoided an early kneebar attempt to get his a takedown into guard where he rained in punches to badly daze the Russian and from there, the guilliotine choke that left Oumakhanov unconscious came easily.

Aside from the Kobayashi result, the event was unfortunately largely indecisive as the highly anticipated bouts featuring Sengoku training player Shigeki Osawa, Masanori Kanehara senior Tomonari Kanomata, Masahiro Toryu and Tetsuya Yamada all ended in draws and the the planed semi-main event between Kei Yamamiya and Gadzhi Zaypullaev was cancelled after Zaypullaev was not cleared by doctors to fight due to an injury sustained in training.

All fighters with the exception of Brian Cobb made weight for Saturday’s Sengoku Raiden Championship 15 to be held at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan and broadcast live from 2 AM Saturday on HDNet.

Cobb, who is scheduled to face Grabaka’s Kazunori Yokota, weighed-in 3.3 kg (7.3 lbs) over weight and was not present for the pre-fight press conference as he was still working to lose the excess weight.

Although former SRC featherweight champ Masanori Kanehara and four-time BJJ World Cup champion Leo Santos were forced off the card, a plethora of talent will still be on show as Maximo Blanco takes on Pancrase legend Kiuma Kunioku, Yasubey Enomoto battles the much improved Taisuke “Gouten” Okuno in the welterweight GP semifinals and the seeded fighters enter the quarterfinals of the bantamweight Asia GP.

Sengoku 15 has taken quite the hit over the last two weeks as Leo Santos bowed out of his anticipated match-up with Yoshida Dojo rising star Maximo Blanco and the return of the former SRC featherweight champ Masanori Kanehara was put on hold as his opponent Doo Ho Choi was also forced to out due to injury.

Still, the promotion still has some high quality action on offer in the form of the excellent bantamweight Asia and welterweight tournaments, former welterweight and middleweight King of Pancrase Kiuma Kunioku has stepped up to face the wonderfully violent Maximo Blanco and Kazunori Yokota will return to face Brian Cobb.

After the break, Sengoku Raiden Championship 15 predictions so good that they probably need a spoiler warning.

Beijing Judo Gold Medalist Satoshi Ishii will step into the K-1 ring for the first time at the K-1 MAX Finals on November 8th but thankfully, he will not be making his K-1 rules debut yet – Ishii will take on kickboxer Antz “Notorious” Nansen under DREAM rules.

After being one of the hottest free agents in all of MMA in 2009, Satoshii Ishii started to show his potential for the first time in his young career during his bout with Ikuhisa Minowa at DREAM.16. Although he may have impressed in the ring (against a much smaller opponent), what really raised eyebrows was the 18.1 rating on TBS, outperforming Daiki Kameda’s WBA title defense that was shown earlier in the evening.

Antz Nansen made his MMA debut in 2009 against another judo – Athens Silver Medalist Hiroshi Izumi. Although Izumi showed astounding toughness, the New Zealand native sent Izumi tumbling to the mat less than three minutes in. Following that bout Nansen was brought in to face Enson Inoue at ASTRA but fell vitcim to a first round armbar.

Deep celebrated 10 years and 50 “Impact” events in grand style on Sunday night at JCB Hall in Tokyo, Japan with four champions, Shinya Aoki and a host of other star Deep returnees on display

Lightweight Champion Katsunori Kikuno fought three hard rounds against the hard-hitting Takanori Gomi disciple Nobuhiro Obiya to retain his strap with a unanimous decision while Deep Welterweight Champion Yuya Shirai also went the distance against a hardy but outclassed Shigetoshi Iwase.

It is potential disaster when you have champions in non-title bouts but disaster was averted as Deep Bantamweight Champion Masakazu Imanari and Light Heavyweight Champion Yoshiyuki Nakanishi both picked up wins against Daiki “DJ.taiki” Hata and Katsuyori Shibata respectively.

It would have been more of a disaster if DREAM Lightweight Champion Shinya Aoki was to lose against MMA rookie Yokthai Sithoar but the reigning champion had no issues as he submitted the former WBA World Champion in the first round, first minute.

Japanese MMA has a reputation for freak shows, the unusual and above all else – putting entertainment above the sport in MMA. A large part of that reputation is due to Shigeru Saeki. The former Public Relations Director of PRIDE fighting championship, mastermind of PRIDE Bushido and the boss of Deep has a penchant for the fun and the bizarre.

Deep’s 10th Anniversary 50th Impact card is an excellent example of the kind of bizarre MMA that Saeki loves. A superhero will face a 300-plus pound Thai boxer. A volleyball player/pro wrestler/actor will fight a karateka. Shinya Aoki and Sanae Kikuta will fight MMA first-timers and both veterans will bring in significant weight advantages. There are also a multitude of name fighters involved in very reasonable bouts but Deep will always attempt to keep things fun, and for that reason, it has become one of the most successful and active promotions in Japan over the past 10 years.
