Those were the words from UFC president Dana White, as he defended himself for releasing Jon Fitch and 15 other UFC fighters this past week.
Because the UFC absorbed Strikeforce, the company has over 100 more fighters than the roster can hold, according to White. It’s safe to say job security in the UFC isn’t exactly at its highest right now.
So heading into UFC 157, many fighters are on the chopping block. Here are the five most notable.

Questions surround No. 1 contender Liz Carmouche tonight, as she readies to fight for the UFC women’s championship at UFC 157.
Carmouche, a listed 7-to-1 underdog, is only given a puncher’s chance by many in tonight’s first female fight in UFC history.
Her abilities and success are both overshadowed by Ronda Rousey’s. Rousey, an Olympic bronze medalist in judo and the first UFC women’s champion, has won all six of her professional MMA bouts in the first round via armbar. That’s a large reason why she’s a 14-to-1 favorite heading into the bout.
Carmouche is one of the biggest underdogs to ever fight for a title in the UFC, and heading into tonight’s historic main event, here are five questions we have for the challenger.

A history-making UFC 157 forecasts great standup wars, thrilling finishes (armbar, anyone?) and eventual No. 1 contendership.
However, the most notable storyline heading into this pay-per-view is easily the first women’s fight in UFC history. Still there are many compelling facets and outcomes for fight fans to keep an eye on heading into this bout.
Each fight on the card tells a unique story. Fighters such as Robbie Lawler, Court McGee and Josh Neer are all facing a possibility of getting cut, while Urijah Faber, Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida fight for future title shots.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Here are five aspects for UFC 157 that fans should keep an eye on.
To say Ronda Rousey is the favorite going into UFC 157 really doesn’t do it justice.Liz Carmouche may be a 7-to-1 underdog against Rousey, but Rousey is an astounding 14-to-1 odds-on favorite to win the main event of tonight’s pay-per-view event.Yes si…
To say Ronda Rousey is the favorite going into UFC 157 really doesn’t do it justice.
Liz Carmouche may be a 7-to-1 underdog against Rousey, but Rousey is an astounding 14-to-1 odds-on favorite to win the main event of tonight’s pay-per-view event.
Yes sir, the line for UFC 157’s headliner reads Carmouche +700, Rousey -1400. So if you believe Carmouche is going to upset the UFC’s first women’s champion tonight, some money is to be made.
But does anyone truly believe that?
Sure, everything Rousey said about Carmouche on the UFC Primetime series may be true. She’s tough, she’s unpredictable at times and she had the courage to step up and take this fight when many didn’t.
Still, Rousey is unlike anything fans have ever seen before. With an Olympic bronze medal in judo, Rousey‘s grappling skills are unrivaled in the division.
The same can be said about her armbars.
Who else has won all six of their professional MMA bouts by armbar in the first round?
So though the odds are a bit lopsided for a UFC main event, there’s justification behind it. Rousey simply is that good, and quite frankly, Carmouche only has a puncher’s chance.
But even that isn’t enough. Tonight, Rousey defends her title and makes yet another statement.
After Rousey shows her improved standup, she clinches, throws Carmouche and puts her in Rousey‘s world. This is a world that no other opponent of Rousey‘s has yet to survive in.
Carmouche won’t either. After taking her to the ground with a throw that’s sure to make the crowd go “ahhhh,” Rousey dominates the top position and locks onto the arm.
We’ve seen this plenty of times before, right? Different opponent, same story. Let’s hope Carmouche doesn’t pull a Miesha Tate and refuses to tap when the pressure is fully applied.
Arm breaks can make the manliest men cringe. Rousey wins by submission in the first round as Carmouche taps to one of Rousey‘s patented armbars.
Little money is to be made on the gambling circuit. The odds heavily favor Rousey. There’s a reason for that.

The hype for UFC 157 has reached its peak, as every fighter on the main card made weight and is set to compete inside the Octagon.
History will be made Saturday night. For the first time in MMA history, a UFC pay-per-view will be headlined by two females.
But before they compete in the main event, Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche had to conquer the scales. The UFC’s first female champion, Rousey, weighed in at 134.6 pounds, while Carmouche was under at 133.6.
As both fighters posed with each other during the staredown, Rousey locked down on her jaw with an intense grimace, while Carmouche looked her dead in the eyes with focused eyes.
As for the co-main event, it was completely different. LyotoMachida made weight at 202 pounds and Dan Henderson tipped the scales at 205, but both fighters’ personalities were certainly noticeable.
With a stagnant, easygoing demeanor, Machida lifted his arms and stared down a grinning Henderson. Nothing more was expected. The weigh-ins and festivities surrounding the fight have never appealed greatly to either fighter.
But rest assured, both fighters will have fire in their eyes tonight.
As Nick Diaz would say, “the beauty pageant” is over. The press conferences are finished, the weigh-ins are completed and the talking is over.
It’s time for these four great fighters to make that walk to the Octagon and do what they do best.

Urijah Faber is a fan favorite for his aggressive style of fighting. It’s made him a superstar in MMA.
However, if “The California Kid” wants to leave UFC 157 with a victory against Ivan Menjivar, he needs to fight intelligently.
Though it’s gained him a great fan-base, Faber’s somewhat wreckless, throw-caution-to-the-wind type of style has gotten him in trouble before. In fact, it stripped him of his featherweight championship in the WEC, as Mike Brown countered a wild elbow with a knockout shot.
A wild strike of that sort against a dangerous fighter like Menjivar could lead to Faber’s second straight defeat and third loss in his last four fights.
