The WEC will make its first trip to Phoenix in December, the promotion announced during the Versus broadcast of WEC 50 on Wednesday night.
In what was a first for the company, the WEC partnered with AMP Energy for a promotion – the “Hometown Takedown Contest” – that allowed fans to vote for the location from a list of 30 cities across the country.
Phoenix will host what is expected to be WEC 54 on Dec. 16 at the Jobing.com Arena in suburban Glendale, home to the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes. Milwaukee and Nashville were the runners-up
MMA Fighting has the complete weigh-in results for the 20 fighters on Wednesday’s WEC 50 card.
All 20 fighters made weight for their bouts. Only one, Zach Micklewright, needed a second attempt when he came in a half-pound over at 156.5 for his lightweight bout with Bart Palaszewski. But after removing his briefs, he made the allowed 156 pounds.
WEC 50: Cruz vs. Benavidez takes place at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas and features a main event bantamweight title fight between champion Dominick Cruz and Joseph Benavidez. The two fought at WEC 42 last August with Cruz taking the unanimous decision, handing Benavidez (13-1, 4-1 WEC) the first loss of his career.
If things go to plan, Scott Jorgensen might want to think about changing his nickname Thursday morning.
They call him “Young Guns,” which probably has more to do with his tendency to get in the pocket and throw hands with another willing slinger than it does any love for the Emilio Estevez movie.
But Jorgensen says his opponent on Wednesday’s WEC 50 card in Las Vegas is expecting a shootout – and if that’s the case, Brad Pickett might have to work to find one.
“He wants to stand and bang,” Jorgensen told MMA Fighting on Sunday. “Am I going to oblige him? Why? I’m smarter than that, man. I’m definitely not one to shy away from a good gun fight, but I’m a smart fighter now.”

Mixed martial arts, with the UFC leading the charge, has cleared another hurdle in the goal of bringing the sport to as much of the world as possible.
UFC president Dana White’s stock response when asked where the promotion wants to go next has been: “We’re taking this thing everywhere.” But up until this point, “everywhere” has not included Ontario, the largest province in Canada.
But after plenty of campaigning by the UFC, MMA can cross another name off its list. According to Ontario’s official website, the provincial government has passed legislation that will regulate MMA starting in 2011.
