Conor McGregor claimed the interim UFC featherweight championship on Sunday at UFC 189 with a TKO triumph over Chad Mendes in the co-main event at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Just seconds before the second round would have been over, McGregor escaped a guillotine choke attempt from Mendes, gathered to his feet and sent his foe to the canvas. The fight was called after McGregor‘s magnificent flurry.

Bleacher Report UK had the snapshot and a fitting quote from McGregor just before the Irishman delivered the decisive blow:

Even though McGregor was gashed badly on the right side of his face and took a good beating overall, he had enough in the tank to smash Mendes in the face with a lethal right jab and left hook combination. The action stopped when McGregor kept pummeling Mendes with his right fist on the ground.

Todd Martin of the Los Angeles Times felt the circumstances surrounding Mendes‘ participation played a role in how the bout played out:

McGregor called out his originally slated opponent Jose Aldo, who pulled out of the fight with a rib injury, per MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani:

MMAFighting.com recorded another notable post-fight comment from McGregor, who said, “I knew I was going to prove to people I’m a true fighter. It doesn’t matter who it is.”

Taking into consideration the strong effort he put forth in the first round, Mendes may have been able to claim the title if he had a bit more notice and time to prepare. Jumping into a sudden championship showdown had to be a bit of a pressure cooker and somewhat surreal.

But afterward, Mendes seemed most grateful for the opportunity and had kind words for his victorious adversary:

UFC President Dana White yanked the featherweight title away from Aldo, so it will be fascinating to see how the matchup between McGregor and Aldo plays out. It seems McGregor has the moxie and skills to be a legitimate star with a 6-0 UFC record and five knockouts. His eagerness to take on Aldo is a testament to those aforementioned qualities.

The way McGregor handled Mendes ought to give The Notorious confidence moving forward in the buildup toward a presumptive clash with Aldo, who has to have first dibs to reclaim what was once his championship.

Mendes still has a chance to take positives from this outcome despite the loss. His wrestling was extremely effective on McGregor, and the respect he’ll gain from his peers for taking on such a daunting task as a UFC 189 headliner should cater to great opportunities down the road.

Whether Mendes gets another title shot remains to be seen. It could come as soon as McGregor and Aldo battle it out for the featherweight belt. On the other hand, Mendes did fall to McGregor and was defeated by Aldo in a unanimous decision at UFC 179 this last October.

Jose Aldo Will Fight Conor McGregor at UFC 189 Despite Rib Injury

Even with a bone bruise and cartilage damage to one of his ribs, Jose Aldo will persevere for the opportunity to fight Conor McGregor at UFC 189.

An official statement from the UFC on Wednesday confirmed Aldo would enter the Octagon as a participant in the main event for the company’s latest marquee showcase at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on July 11.

Multiple doctors declared Aldo didn’t have a broken rib as was previously feared, according to the statement. Should Aldo not be fit enough to ultimately enter the bout, his replacement will be Chad Mendes.

Aldo suffered the injury during a sparring session with partner Alcides Nunes, who explained how he hurt the reigning UFC featherweight champion to MMAFighting.com’s Guilherme Cruz:

I threw a kick but slipped with all the sweat on the mat, and ended up hitting his rib. I was mimicking McGregor’s unorthodox style, things he does in the fight. I’m also left-handed, my style is similar to his, so that’s why they asked me to be part of his camp, but I ended up slipping and causing this injury.

Ronan O’Flaherty of the Irish Daily Star weighed in on Wednesday’s news:

McGregor weighed in on the news as well on Wednesday, saying “It turned out he just had a little period pain.”

Since a backup plan is in place, there still has to be a question as to just how healthy Aldo is. Any body blow to the rib area will still be extremely painful, and it could result in a broken rib if McGregor strikes him just right.

It’s a valiant effort for Aldo to go forward with the fight if he ultimately does. However, there’s also considerable risk being taken on. McGregor boasts a 17-2 record, hasn’t lost since joining the UFC and will be eager to prove himself in this highly anticipated showdown.

There is still some time remaining for Aldo to recuperate ahead of what will hopefully be an eighth successful UFC title defense. Aldo will need to utilize all he can from his versatile arsenal and maintain his outstanding takedown defense to knock off McGregor and retain his belt.

Jon Jones to Have Immediate Shot at Title Upon Return, Says Dana White

UFC President Dana White said Wednesday that former light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones will have a shot to win back his title whenever he returns to competition.

MMAFighting.com’s Shaun Al-Shatti reported what White had to say about Jones’ UFC future during a Wednesday interview on The Jim Rome Show:

He comes right back and he fights for the title. He hasn’t had the time that Anderson Silva’s had, but he is the most dominant champion. If you look at the murderer’s row of the 205-pound division that he went through, and he just went through it like a hot knife through butter, I mean, he’s the man. So whenever he gets his stuff together, he’d come right back and fight for the title.

Jones has a 21-1 overall MMA record and was last seen in action defeating Daniel Cormier by unanimous decision at UFC 182. Numerous disciplinary issues led to Jones being suspended and stripped of his title, with the last straw being a felony charge for an alleged hit and run.

White did acknowledge Wednesday that he needs to see Jones make the proper changes in his life and get through his legal battles to merit another title shot.

“He’s got a civil suit against him and all this other stuff,” said White. “(We’ll) see how he gets through this and then find out where his head is. How does he handle himself through this situation and after it? I mean, I gotta see from him that he’s doing the right thing.”

Fox Sports: UFC notes how Cormier and another fighter have taken the position of Jones being allowed the right to take back his title:

Provided Jones can clean up his act away from the Octagon, it does make sense that White is open to letting the 27-year-old fighter pick up essentially where he left off—if he can—whenever he’s back.

With eight successful title defenses, Jones has established himself as a legitimate superstar and seems nearly unbeatable. One can only imagine how great Jones could be if he’s able to overcome his recent self-imposed adversity and focus even more exclusively on his UFC training.

The notion that Jones hasn’t fully unlocked his potential has to make MMA fans hopeful he can bounce back and rectify his wrongdoings.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones tweeted an apology on Tuesday after he turned himself in due to his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run.

“Got a lot of soul searching to do. Sorry to everyone I’ve let down,” said Jones on Twitter.

Shortly after Jones released his statement, it was announced that he had been suspended indefinitely and stripped of his title, per FOX Sports Live. MMAFighting.com announced that Daniel Cormier will take his place against Anthony Johnson at UFC 187.

Hours after turning himself in to authorities in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jones was released from jail Monday night when he posted $2,500 bail, per MMAFighting.com’s Marc Raimondi.

The alleged hit-and-run occurred Sunday morning and involved a pregnant woman in her 20s, according to ESPN.com’s Brett Okamoto. When Jones had his hearing earlier Tuesday, Okamoto added that Jones didn’t enter a plea, and that he can’t consume alcohol or drugs if he’s to remain out of police custody.

Jones, 27, was scheduled to defend his title belt once again at UFC 187 on May 23 against Anthony Johnson in Las Vegas. Until the legal matter is resolved, it appears Jones’ future in the Octagon is up in the air.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has been taken into police custody after allegedly being involved in a hit-and-run.

Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com reported that UFC is aware of the news, but did not plan on releasing a statement this evening.

Jones has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident, and the bond has been set at $2500, according to Damon Martin of Fox Sports.

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto reported that the alleged incident occurred on Sunday morning. The report also contained a statement from Albuquerque Police Department spokesman Simon Drobik.

“The case has progressed and he is now our suspect in the the hit and run that happened earlier this morning involving a pregnant female,” said Drobik. “We are now definitely looking at him as a suspect.”

MMAFighting.com’s Marc Raimondi added further information after speaking with Drobik:

A woman’s car was struck Sunday morning in Albuquerque, N.M., and the offender in the other vehicle fled the scene, per Albuquerque PD spokesman Simon Drobik. The case is currently under investigation and Albuquerque PD would like to speak with Jones regarding the matter. Drobik could not confirm if Jones was a suspect in the incident.

USA Today‘s Maggie Hendricks weighed in on the situation:

This isn’t the first time Jones has encountered trouble away from the Octagon. In May 2012, he crashed his car into a telephone pole and pleaded guilty to a DWI charge.

Before defeating Daniel Cormier in his previous fight at UFC 182 in January, Jones was fined $50,000 for partaking in a brawl with Cormier at a UFC press conference last August. Jones then tested positive for cocaine prior to the bout, which was in violation of the UFC athlete code of conduct.

Talented as Jones is as an MMA dynamo, he appears to be having issues away from his profession. Jones, 27, may be facing his biggest hurdle yet as it pertains to his future outlook with the UFC and his career overall.
