UFC on FX 6 saw the close of The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes.

Coaches Ross Pearson and George Sotiropoulos faced off in the main event of the evening in what would turn into one of the most dominant performances of Pearson’s career. He used various combinations to land clean shots to Sotiropoulos‘ head and body.

Speaking of Sotiropoulos, with those three knockdowns, it may be time to start thinking of retirement. He’s looking more like Glass Joe from Punch Out every time that he enters the Octagon.

The lightweight and welterweight finals provided some quality action. And Hector Lombard finally justified his pay check with a first-round stoppage of Rousimar Palhares

I’m sleepy. Take a look at the grades.

Bleacher Report caught up with James Head at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino as he prepares to take on Mike Pyle.

Head is currently on a two fight winning streak and looks to put the welterweight division on notice with a win over Pyle on Saturday night.

In the video, Head reflects on his win over Brian Ebersole, and also discusses why he competes.

For those that are unaware, Head is a petroleum engineer by day, yet finds the time to train full-time for all of his UFC fights.

Head vs. Pyle is at the top of the Fuel TV preliminary card at The Ultimate Fighter: Team Carwin vs Team Nelson finale.

This Friday, the UFC heads to the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre with The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes finale.

Coaches Ross Pearson and George Sotiropoulos face off in the main event of the evening in a lightweight contest. Pearson is making his return to 155 after a brief, yet unsuccessful run at featherweight.

In The Smashes welterweight finals, Aussie Robert Whittaker faces the UK’s Brad Scott. Whittaker was the most impressive contestant all season and now is just one fight away from that six-figure UFC contract.

The Smashes lightweight finals has Fight of the Night written all over it as Colin Fletcher takes on Norman Parke in an all-UK bout. Fletcher was a bit of an oddball all season yet backed up his behavior in the cage.

Rounding out the broadcast, Rousimar Palhares looks to rebound against Hector Lombard, who is looking to pick up his first UFC win.

It’s a solid international card that could have some real impact in several of the UFC’s key divisions.

Bleacher Report MMA Featured Columnists Matthew Roth, McKinley Noble, Sean Smith, Scott Harris, Kyle Symes, and John Heinis are back with official main-card predictions for UFC on FX 6.

Take a look to see whom we picked to win it all this weekend.

Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale: Roy Nelson Says Mitrione Made the Fight Personal

Roy Nelson spent an entire season of The Ultimate Fighter preparing mentally to face Shane Carwin. It was a fight that he wanted and one that appeared to be very personal. In fact, Nelson pushed openly for VADA-testing for their fight at The Ultimate Fighter finale in Las Vegas.

But then Shane Carwin suffered a knee injury in training. What was first reported as a minor injury soon became serious enough to force Carwin from the card. It would have been Carwin‘s first fight in over a year.

On Monday’s conference call, Nelson spoke with media about his upcoming fight Saturday with Matt Mitrione. One of the most interesting aspects of this fight is Nelson’s relative silence with out-of-competition drug testing.

“It wasn’t that big of a deal. I asked Matt and it’s either a yes-or-no question and that’s it. It’s not worth kicking a dead horse,” Nelson explained. “All I can do is ask once and it’s either yes or no. You need to take it or you don’t. So far I’m 0-2.”

With VADA-style testing such a major talking point leading into the Carwin fight, it’s definitely an issue that Nelson appears to want to push. That his peers in MMA don’t seem to feel the same way could be met with some raised eyebrows.

But Nelson won’t let himself to lose focus in such an important fighter. He’s had to make several adjustments in his training camp as Carwin and Mitrione are not the same fighters. While Carwin is known for his knockout power, Mitrione presents issues as he’s a southpaw.

“I think the biggest thing we switched up was Shane and Matt are two different fighters,” Nelson said. “One fights southpaw, one fights orthodox so that’s a big change. And then the other thing from my understanding Matt chose this fight so I guess it becomes a little big more personal.”

I’m not sure if Nelson truly believes it’s personal between him and Mitrione, but he sure believes that fans will see how he really was as a coach when the DVD is released.

It’s very common for footage to be left on the cutting-room floor and Nelson wasn’t exactly portrayed in the best light during the season. Even while Shane Carwin remained silent during fights and watched his team from the sidelines, Nelson coached his team to victory throughout the seasons.

And as for his staff? There was many people that were never shown on television, including UFC legend Royce Gracie. But Nelson isn’t worried. He expects vindication once fans get to see what really happened while the cameras were rolling.

“You know the one thing about the UFC is that they’re a great marketing machine. I think that they’re just waiting to sell the DVD. For the DVD it’s gonna be Roy Nelson has five Ultimate Fighter winners, three UFC champions, five world champions, and actually having Royce Gracie on there and get behind the scenes footage and buy the DVD now.”

Roy Nelson faces Matt Mitrione in the main event of the Ultimate Fighter finale this Saturday on FX.

Dana White Breaks Down Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez 4

This weekend may very well be the best this year has seen in combat sports. With some quality MMA on Friday night that got fans amped up for UFC on Fox 5 in Seattle, it’s one of those rare occasions when there’s possibly too much fighting to digest.

Following the UFC on Fox 5 card, which features a lightweight title fight between champion Benson Henderson and Nate Diaz, boxing has its own highly anticipated event between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez

It’s the fourth meeting between the two boxers, with Pacquiao holding two wins over the Mexican fighter. Their last bout was a bit controversial, as many pundits felt that Marquez did more than enough to win. Tim Smith of the New York Daily News wrote that Marquez “was robbed of a decision by judges who were either blind or corrupt.”

Following the UFC on Fox 5 pre-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White spoke with attending media about the upcoming bout. White is an avid boxing fan and has publicly supported Pacquiao in the media.

However, from the sound of it, White isn’t too confident about Pacquiao’s chances this evening.

“So you guys know I’m a huge Pacquiao fan,” White told Bleacher Report. “[The HBO series] 24/7 f*cks with your head so bad. If you look at it, it makes it seem like Pacquiao isn’t that focused. You got guys like Freddie Roach saying, ‘I used to be the boss, but I’m not the boss any more. He knows what he needs to do.’

“And then the next episode he says, ‘I shouldn’t have said that. I should be the boss.’ It just seems like there’s so much turmoil and distractions in his camp.”

There’s always distractions within a camp, but White’s comments hold a lot of truth. Pacquiao is one of the most recognizable athletes in the world, and it’s very common for the ego to take over.

It is combat sports after all.

But it may not be the actual training camp that’s causing Pacman to take control of his career. There is always a time when a fighter stops thinking about titles and instead focuses on how much money he can earn before exiting from the sport.

“The one thing I gotta be honest about cause I always am,” said White. “The one thing that I didn’t like because I hate this stuff and I’m surprised Pacquiao said this, they were asking him about the belt. You guys see what he said? They were asking him about the belt and he goes, ‘It’s all about the paycheck.’

“And Marquez looks nasty. He’s training hardcore. He’s in great shape.”

So who is the UFC president picking for tonight’s boxing main event? The answer may come as a bit of a surprise to some.

“I gotta go with Marquez.”
