On June 18, 2011 in Dallas, Texas two monster heavyweight clashes will take place. The first pits hard-hitting Brett Rogers against former UFC champion Josh Barnett. That matchup is intriguing but the main event is the fight that everyone wants to see.

Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair “The Demolition Man” Overeem and Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum have met once before, in 2006 under the Pride organization. Werdum won the first bout by submission via kimura. Since that time, they have each come a long way in their respective careers.

After a disappointing stint in UFC that saw him suffer a devastating knockout to Junior Dos Santos in the younger man’s debut, Fabricio has had huge success in Strikeforce.  In 2009, Werdum had his first Strikeforce bout, and since then he has won all three of his bouts. He has defeated Mike Kyle, Antonio Silva and Fedor Emelianenko for an impressive three-fight win streak. His win over Fedor was the Russian’s first defeat in 10 years.

Werdum is at an all-time high in his career. Can he beat Overeem and advance to the semifinals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix? That is the question and the challenge he now faces.

After his loss to Werdum in 2006, Alistair Overeem has completely reestablished himself as a fighter. Since that loss, his MMA record has been stellar. Overeem has gone 11-4 with one controversial no contest against Mirko Cro Cop in a fight he was dominating.

Overeem has now not lost an MMA fight in almost four years. In 2010 he had an amazing year.  In that calender year he defended his Strikeforce heavyweight title, won an interim belt in a fight for the Dream organization and became the first MMA fighter to win the K1 World Grand Prix.

Things have drastically changed for each man since their fight in Pride five long years ago. The true question here is what has changed from their first meeting until now?

Werdum has added several key wins, much bigger wins than Overeem; however, his game has changed little if at all. Overeem has changed greatly. Since 2006, Overeem has turned himself into a complete fighter and a man that many heavyweights like to criticize, but if they were locked in a cage with him they would be feeling much different.

Overeem changed from a 220-pound man that cut weight to be a light heavyweight. In the time after he left Pride and the present day, he has added over 30 pounds of lean muscle to his frame. On top of this he has improved his striking by leaps and bounds. He is now a faster and stronger man than Werdum defeated in 2006.

It is Werdum who has faced the tougher competition and won those battles more often than not.

Overeem has typically lost his biggest fights. Since his loss to Werdum, Overeem has rarely fought top notch competition. This is something that would be a detriment to most fighters but Alistair is not a typical fighter. He has not fought a top MMA fighter for some time, but he has greatly improved as an athlete. His striking has improved by leaps and bounds. After a great year in 2010, he is poised to avenge a loss that has been on his mind for a long time.

Werdum is looking to prove he is the best heavyweight in the world and he is finally past his brutal knockout loss at UFC 90. Werdum has the submission game and jiu jitsu prowess to submit Overeem again, I just don’t think he will have a chance to do so. Overeem has better defense and speed than he did in 2006. Overeem is also a much better striker with the strength to knock people out with both hands, knees or kicks.

Overeem will overwhelm Werdum and move on to the semifinals of the Strikeforce tournament.

MMAweekly.com reported on the feud between Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz.  The two men met in the WEC years ago when Cruz was only 21 years old.  The fight was for Faber’s 145-pound world title, which he retained by defeating Cruz.  This was the only loss in Dominic Cruz’s career, and since then he has won all of his fights at bantamweight (135 pounds).

On July 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Cruz and Faber rematch.  However, at UFC 132, Dominick Cruz is the champion, and Urijah Faber is the challenger.  Both men are very aware of the role reversal and the champion is ready to prove he can beat Faber.

Cage Potato reported this week that Dana White and Josh Barnett are now civil.  The shaky past of Dana White and Josh Barnett is no joking matter.  It is well documented that the UFC president has had his problems with Barnett in the past.

Recently the UFC held its third annual Fighter Summit to educate the employees of UFC and Strikeforce on such topics as concussions, health care, the dangers of steroids and other useful topics.

To most fighters it was most definitely boring.  According to a Cage Potato article, Gegard Mousasi took to drawing sketches to deal with being bored at the event.  Nonetheless, many of the issues covered affect many people and everyone needs to be informed.

On a lighter note, the event brought Dana White and Josh Barnett back together.  They seem to be getting along just fine.  This would never have happened even a couple of years ago.  Barnett commented on his Twitter that, “Pigs have now flown. Watch for Hell to freeze over next. Me and @danawhite together again.”

Josh will face Brett Rogers in the quarterfinals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix on June 18th.  Hopefully he wins that match because his future with the company is questionable still, despite how cordial he and Dana White are in public.

Recently, we saw a great Octagon warrior and a true legend walk away from the sport. It was the right time and it was the right place. The Rogers Centre was jammed with over 56,000 people.  It was very fitting that “The Natural” Randy Couture would save his biggest for last. Randy will never be forgotten. His legacy in the UFC will stay very much intact.

Randy was a man who defied Father Time since he entered the UFC in 1997. He never backed down from anyone and he never quit in a fight. A person can look at a 19-11 record and be confused if they did not see him fight or know the context of those affairs. His career can be summed up in one word: Legendary.

Ultimate Fighter Team Lesnar vs. Team Dos Santos: UFC & Spike Should Update Adds

As I watched the new episode of the Ultimate Fighter on a hot and humid night in Tennessee, something I rarely see caught my eye. The main event for UFC 130 has been changed to the Quinton Jackson and Matt Hamill match-up, yet the promos for the event have not changed.

It seems odd that the UFC or Spike would make such a simple error.

There very well could be thousands of people who, at this moment, do not know that Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard have both had to withdraw due to injury.  It is not a huge deal to me or anyone who follows the sport constantly, but it could leave a bad taste in the mouth of the casual fan.

Hopefully, by tomorrow the mistake has been corrected and the people who see the replays will know of the change.  Not everyone follows the news like hardcore fans do and that was very misleading.

In the end it probably won’t matter all that much because there are three weeks remaining to do damage control for the hiccup but in an era when the UFC President is touting that they can compete with the NFL, NBA and MLB nothing can be spared to scratch their way to the top.

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre defended his title for the sixth consecutive time on April 30 in front of a North American record crowd of 55,000 people.  The feat seems even more impressive when a person factors in the eye injury that he suffered in the first round.  Greg Jackson, one of GSP’s trainers, commented after the fight that he was worried about Georges’ eye, and was concerned it could be a future problem.

In a recent interview with ESPN.com, St-Pierre said he expects to make a full recovery.  He has admitted he still has blurred vision, but is confident it will only get better with time.

All of the champs’ future plans have been put on hold until he can get his present situation resolved, but St-Pierre is determined to be back in the Octagon soon.

St-Pierre stated, “My medical condition is called Hyphema. My vision is still blurry and my eye sensitive but the blood in my eye has now been absorbed. My retina is fine as well and my vision will come back to 100%.

One thing is certain, MMA is better off with St-Pierre.  We can only hope for a speedy recovery.
