In spite of his disappointing loss at UFC 144 to former number one UFC welterweight contender Jake Shields, Yoshihiro Akiyama is still cool in our books.
We just got a note from Sexyama with his winning picks from the TrauMMA Sexyama UFC 144 Photoshop Contest, so we figured we’d make three lucky readers’ weekends a whole lot better by letting them know they’ve each won an autographed version of the walkout shirt he wore that night.
Big thanks to TrauMMA Combat Apparel and Yoshihiro for partnering with us for this awesome contest. If you didn’t win, you can pick up one of the shirts HERE.
Check out the winning entries after the jump.

(“Stick with me, kid, I’ll make you an action star on the Hallmark Channel.”)
Well it looks like one glowing reference Urijah Faber will have on his resume when he starts applying for acting gigs will be from Rosie O’Donnell, which could go a long way if they’re looking to cast a teenage Bam Bam for Flintstones III.
The former WEC champ appeared on Rosie’s show on the Oprah Winfrey Network recently and the actress gushed over him, telling Faber that he has a bright future in movies.
“I wouldn’t want you to [be fighting when you’re in your 40s] either, honey, because you’re too charismatic and you’re too kind of… I think you’re going to have a career like ‘The Rock.’ I think you transfer over to showbiz and you could have a full career in movies with karate where you’re the superhero-like kind of guy.”

Besides the odd commercial, Faber says he did some acting as a kid, but explained to Rosie that he isn’t interested in doing casting calls. Sorry to break it to you, Urijah, but unless The Hobbit is looking for extras or a young pre-mountie Dudley Doright is needed for a prequel, you might be waiting a while by the phone for casting directors to call. You aren’t as recognizable as Randy Couture or Gina Carano, and you don’t have the swagger that ‘Rampage’ has.
(“Now insult my mother and tell me you want to slap her on the ass and make her cook you some borscht.”)
With today’s fighting landscape where we see teammates competing against one another like Gokan Saki fighting Golden Glory training partner Alistair Overeem in K-1 and Carlos Condit preparing to take on Team Jackson stablemate Georges St-Pierre, you’d think that brothers competing in a combat sambo match wouldn’t be a big deal.
The former PRIDE and WAMMA heavyweight champion competed in his beloved Russian mat sport last month and when he found himself paired with younger brother Aleksander in the heavyweight final, the fix was in.
Instead of squaring off, Alecks, who is a four-time Sambo champ, embraced Fedor, allowing himself to be thrown and submitted by his brother with an armbar, in what looked more like a demo than a bout.
The brief display made Bob Sapp look like a gamer.

Here’s what Fedor said about “winning” the championship:
“I’m glad to take part in the Russian championship,” he told RIA-Novosti. “I always try to come out here when I have no professional fights, like this time around. I think combat sambo is the best kind of martial art – it combines boxing, wrestling and sporting sambo. As for the final bout, my brother gave in to me today. He always gives in to me. Did I give 100 per cent? Let’s not talk about that today.”
Maybe his training wasn’t as intense as it was for past events.
They could have at least made it interesting for the fans who were at the event. It’s not like they haven’t sparred with each other before and they wear headgear.
(“When I was a teenager and I was having problems in West Linn, my mom sent me to live with my Auntie and Uncle in Bel Air. I’ll never forget how bad the cab driver smelled that took me to their house.”)
It appears the Gangster from America is back to his old tricks copping material and claiming it as his own.

In the scene, Estevez, who played William H. Bonney, AKA “Billy the Kid” in the flick, dictated a heartfelt letter to fellow Regulator Josiah “Doc” Scurlock, played by Kiefer Sutherland in which the outlaw seemed to be negotiating his surrendered to the governor of Utah.

Dear Governor Axtell,
I’ve heard that you will give 200 dollars for my head. Perhaps we should meet and talk. I am at the Juarez village at the border. Send three men and instruct them not to shoot, as I am unarmed. In short, Sir, I surrender.
Your obedient servant,
William H. Bonney.
P.S. I changed my mind.
Kiss my ass.
Sonnen recited an eerily similar letter to nemesis Anderson Silva last night during his weekly “Piper’s Pit” “Chael’s Corner” segment on Fuel TV’s UFC Tonight, proclaiming a truce and relinquishing his title shot this summer.
The only thing missing was the bathtub and the cigar.

Anderson,
Over the last several months, I’ve disparaged your name in an attempt to garner respect and attention for my own. That was wrong and I apologize. My actions were unsportsmanlike. They were uncalled for. Though they weren’t mean-spirited, I do regret them. As you know, I’ve recently become the number one contender, which is a position that respectfully and immediately I am resigning from. I wish no further confrontation with you in the Octagon or through the media. In short, I surrender.
Signed,
Your friend, Chael P. Sonnen
P.S. I changed my mind.
Anderson, you can kiss my ass.
Come on, Chael P. Mencia, At least come up with your own schtick.
Next thing you know he’ll be ripping off Mr. Belvedere.
(Conveniently, Bellator failed to mention whether or not this is a title fight.)
Bellator Fighting Championships announced today that a main event match-up between Bellator lightweight champ Michael Chandler and PRIDE and UFC vet Akihiro Gono will close out its planned Bellator 67 card May 4 at Casino Rama in Rama, Ontario Canada.
A crafty veteran, Gono (32-17-7) should provide a challenge for the undefeated newly crowned 155-pound BFC champ.
“I’m just excited to get back into the cage,” Chandler said of the planned bout. “I fought four times in 2011 and I’m ready to get back to work. Gono has beaten some of the best fighters in the sport and this should be a good test for me.”

While Gono, 37, holds the edge in experience, 25-year-old Chandler has an advantage in youth and well-roundedness. An All American wrestler who has worked tirelessly with former Xtreme Couture boxing coach Gil Martinez to improve his striking, Chandler also possesses a fierce submission game. Although one could argue that Gono, who is 4-6 in his last ten and 0-2 in his past two fights, is a step down in competition for the 9-0 Missouri fighter who defeated Eddie Alvarez and Patricky “Pitbull” Feire in his last two outings, it should still be an entertaining fight.
The event will be broadcast LIVE starting at 8 p.m. ET on MTV2 and in commercial-free HD on EPIX. Doors open at 6 p.m. EST, with the first fight scheduled for 7 p.m. EST. The preliminary card, featuring the area’s top local talent will be streamed LIVE and FREE around the world on Spike.com starting at 7 p.m. ET.
Just a friendly reminder for you to set your PVR for 9:00 p.m. ET tonight so you don’t miss the acclaimed two-hour Bruce Lee documentary SPIKE TV is airing.
The film, “I Am Bruce Lee,” is a theatrical release currently playing in select theatres in Australia, the U.S. and Canada this month, and by all accounts it’s definitely worth watching, especially if you’re a fan of the late great martial artist and actor’s work.

Featuring interviews with several MMA luminaries, including Dana White, Gina Carano, Cung Le, Jon Jones and Stephan Bonnar, the movie is a retrospective look at Lee’s legacy and how his films and dedication to martial arts affected those who experienced the cultural icon’s talents.

Many fighters point to Lee as the reason why they got into martial arts and eventually fighting, so it’s no wonder they had so many mixed martial artists in the film.
