In a live stream to his fans on Wednesday, the dynamic striker said: “It was probably the most dramatic experience I ever had. I mean, I was in and out of it. I was conscious, but I was unconscious. I knew it was happening, but I was fighting over it. I was punching.”

Hall continued, “I think I had a mini-seizure and at the same time a slight heart attack. My kidneys just were not good.”

How close was Hall to his ultimate end? “The doctor even said even if I had made weight I probably would have died the next day cause my body wasn’t having it,” said Hall.

The 33-year-old added he has been following doctors orders and is improving.

“As much as I neglected my safety and my health, which was the dumbest thing to do, I will never do that again.”

It’s a new year and the slate is clean. The UFC heads to St. Louis to kick off the calendar with a featherweight clash headlining the bill at UFC Fight Night 124 in the Scottrade Center.

Contenders Jeremy Stephens and Doo Ho Choi will look to try to ignite fireworks in the evening’s main event. It will be Choi’s first fight back since his loss in the 2016 Fight of the Year contender against Cub Swanson.

In the co-main event, MMA legend Vitor Belfort makes one final trip to the cage. Standing opposite him will be the dynamic Uriah Hall.

Who walks out of the cage with a win under their belt for the remaining months of the new year?

The Bleacher Report team is back. Steven Rondina, Scott Harris, Craig Amos and Nathan McCarter take a look at the four-fight main card to offer prognostications of the UFC’s first event of 2018.

One of the most legendary careers in MMA is coming to an end Sunday.

Vitor Belfort (26-13, 1 no-contest) announced his decision on the UFC Unfiltered podcast (h/t MMANYTT’s Jim Edwards) that he will make his final walk to the cage at UFC Fight Night 124 in St. Louis at the Scottrade Center against No. 11-ranked middleweight contender Uriah Hall.

Belfort told UFC Unfiltered hosts Jim Norton and Matt Serra: “I think we got to know the time to start and I think we need to know the time to end.”

The Phenom got his start in 1996 by defeating Jon Hess before making his now-legendary UFC debut at UFC 12 in February 1997. Belfort won the heavyweight tournament with two quick knockout performances that instantly made him a star in the sport.

“Life is about seasons, and I think you got to know the seasons. I think I did more than enough,” said Belfort. “Sometimes I flash back and say, ‘Wow, I’m still doing this. Wow, it’s crazy.’ And I’m very thankful, but I think my body needs a rest.”

He certainly did more than enough. In more than two decades of professional action, Belfort competed in across the globe in most of the major MMA organizations. Belfort captured the UFC light heavyweight title in 2004 and fought for both the middleweight and light heavyweight belts against all-time greats Anderson Silva and Jon Jones.

Belfort is choosing to go out on his own terms and is content with the decision. The ex-champion said, “I’m going into the second journey of life, and I’m happy.”

But his retirement fight will be no easy task. Belfort will seek to end his career in style in the co-main event of UFC Fight Night 124 against one of the sport’s most dynamic strikers in Hall. But a stoppage victory will move him past Silva for the record of most stoppages in UFC history (h/t MMAjunkie’s Mike Bohn and Abbey Subhan).

The matchup should produce fireworks. If Belfort can bring The Phenom out just one more time, he may be able to ride off into the sunset by giving fans a throwback performance.

Daniel Cormier Open to Fighting for Heavyweight Title After UFC 220

Reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier may be looking down the line at a potential return to the heavyweight division.

In an interview on MMAjunkie Radio (h/t MMA Junkie’s Fernanda Prates), Cormier responded to the prospect of beating the winner of UFC 220’s main event, Stipe Miocic vs. Francis Ngannou, for the UFC heavyweight title by stating, “It would be the most amazing thing in the world.”

Cormier is a former Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix victor and started his UFC career by going 2-0 in the heavyweight division. The current 205-pound champion has only been a light heavyweight since February of 2014. Thirteen of his 19 professional wins have come in the heavyweight division.

Cormier spoke about the process it would take for the scenario to play out. He would need to construct a plan with his team to bulk back up “to a healthy, strong, 235, 240 pounds.”

The thought of Cormier returning to heavyweight for a showdown against the winner of the heavyweight title tilt is nothing new. Prominent figures such as MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani have already pontificated about this plan. With both light heavyweight and heavyweight belts up for grabs at UFC 220, it is an idea most definitely in play for 2018.

For it to become a viable option, Cormier must first defeat Volkan Oezdemir in the co-main event at UFC 220 in Boston at the TD Garden arena on January 20. If Cormier gets past another 205-pound contender, perhaps a superfight with the heavyweight champion will be in order.
