Melvin Guillard approaches each of his fights as if they are title fights, so the top 10 lightweight won’t sweat it if Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez ends up getting a title shot first.

After Saturday’s UFC on Versus 6, UFC president Dana White revealed to reporters that he’s working to bring Melendez into the UFC fold “ASAP” with the possibility of Melendez entering with an immediate shot at the belt. That’s potentially bad news for contenders in line for a chance at the winner of this Saturday’s UFC 136 title fight between champion Frankie Edgar and challenger Gray Maynard.

“I wouldn’t be upset,” Guillard said Monday on The MMA Hour. “I look at it like this man, Two champions from two different organizations i think they both should fight to get rid of the No. 1 [contender].”

As for why Guillard has the patience to wait when most contenders campaign or at times outright begged (Georges St-Pierre, Jon Jones) for a title shot, Guillard has several reasons. Guillard understands that the fans will want to see who the true champion is between the two promotions’ titleholders.

Additionally, Guillard doesn’t mind knocking off another potential No. 1 contender. The current No. 1 contender fight pits Clay Guida vs. Ben Henderson and Guillard would be interested in fighting the former WEC champ.

“It takes the heat off of me too. I rather get another fight,” the 28-year-old says. “If it has to be the winner of Guida and Ben Henderson, but right now Guida is my teammate, so I won’t fight him, but if something went wrong and Ben won, then I’d take the Ben Henderson fight next if i had to. It all has to work itself out and see what happens. we can’t really say who’s next and who’s gonna get what. Right now my main focus is on beatting up Joe Lauzon Satuday, winning that fight and I’ll move forward from there.”

He definitely wouldn’t fight Guida though, at least in the near future. Guillard, who splits his training with Imperial Athletics in Florida and Jackson’s MMA in Albuquerque, has trained closely with Guida under Greg Jackson.

“I wouldn’t fight my teammate unless it’s for the title,” Guillard said. “That’s the only way me Cowboy {Donald Cerrone) or Clay Guida would ever fight each other. Because at that point, it’s about us having our legacy.”

After his first-round knockout over Shane Roller at UFC 132 in July, Guillard wanted to fight Jim Miller, but when Miller ended up fighting Henderson. Guillard then sought a fight on the UFC 136 card in Texas, where Guillard considers his second home after New Orleans. Examining the list of available opponents, and especially impressed with Lauzon’s dominant win over Curt Warburton, Guillard secured the fight after pitching Lauzon to UFC matchmaker Joe Silva as well as Lauzon’s camp.

Guillard, who is ranked in the top 10 as a lightweight fighter, doesn’t believe it is a step down to fight Lauzon, who is 2-2 in his last four fights. It all goes back to him envisioning every fight as a title fight. By the time he does fight for the belt, he won’t feel any pressure.

“The 155 is a big traffic jam right now,” Guillard said. “I could care less if i’m next or after that. I’m just going to keep fighting and keep winning … To me every fight is a title fight. I treat every fight like a title fight so right now I’ve felt like I’ve defended my title five times already and I’m working on No. 6 this weekend.”

Just 11 days after shutting down Wanderlei Silva prospect Jorge Lopez at UFC Fight Night 23, welterweight Justin Edwards accepted on Wednesday a fight against John Maguire at UFC 138 on Nov. 5 in Birmingham, England.

Edwards is a replacement for the injured James Head. Maguire is also a recent addition to the UFC 138 card, signing on last week to replace Mark Scanlon against Head.

Edwards (7-1), a contestant on season 13 of The Ultimate Fighter, lost his UFC debut in a split decision to Clay Harvison in June, but bounced back two weeks ago with a unanimous decision over Lopez, snapping the Team Wand fighter’s 10-fight win streak.

Maguire (16-3) is UK-based submission fighter who will be making his UFC debut. Fighting out of the Tsunami Gym, he has held the Cage Rage UK and OMMAC titles.

UFC 138, headlined by the promotion’s first five-round, non-title fight, Chris Leben vs. Mark Munoz, will air on same-day, tape-delay on Spike TV.

This past Saturday’s UFC 135 event from the Pepsi Center in Denver drew a total crowd of 16,344 for a final gate of $2,089,575, the Colorado athletic commission revealed Tuesday.

Of the 16,344 in attendance, 14,247 paid for tickets and 2,097 were comped.

More UFC 135 notes from the commission are below.

— When it comes to fighter salaries, the commission says it only verifies that fighters are paid by promoters and fighter salaries are not disclosed.

Tony Ferguson was awarded the victory over Aaron Riley after it became apparent Riley had suffered an injury to his jaw. Riley has since been issued a 180-day suspension which can be reduced to 90 days with medical clearance.

–Despite a dominant win in the main event, Jon Jones was handed a 180-day suspension or 45 days with medical clearance. Meanwhile, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson was suspended for 60 days with no contact for 45 days.

— The only other fighter recommended for a further check-up was Jame Te Huna, whom the commission suspended 180 days or minimum 30 days with medical clearance.

As a fairly unexposed commodity, Dominick Cruz isn’t bothered by the fact that his bantamweight title fight this Saturday will be on Versus rather than pay-per-view.

The UFC has in only one other instance premiered a championship on free TV, but that particular UFC 75 card in England aired on tape-delay. Cruz’s fight at UFC on Versus 6 will be live.

Some might consider the idea of a champion fighting on cable TV discouraging. Not Cruz.

“What the UFC is doing is they’re putting me on free TV,” Cruz said Monday on The MMA Hour. “I can [make it] known to the casual fan the champion that I am, go out there and have an outstanding performance on TV and really I get myself out there and represent the 135-pound division to a wider audience for free.”

And Cruz (18-1)’s title defense is in the midst of three straight weeks of UFC title fights, not an ideal position to command attention, especially by a fledgling division. But the champ understands why the UFC’s marketing efforts have been primarily directed towards last Saturday’s UFC 135 with Jon Jones vs. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and UFC 136 with Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard in two weeks.

“While those fights get more marketing muscle you got to think of how many times I’ve fought in the UFC and how many of the casual fans know who I am and have seen me,” the 26-year-old Cruz admits. “The people who sell the most pay-per-views are the people in the UFC that are known by the casual fans.”

Cruz has only made one UFC appearance, successfully defending his belt against Urijah Faber at UFC 132 in July. After the Faber win, the UFC offered Demetrious Johnson to Cruz instead of another worthy challenger in Brian Bowles. Cruz figures the UFC picked Johnson since Cruz already holds a win over Bowles and the promotion tends “want to wait on rematches.”

Johnson brings to the fight a 10-1 record and coming off a big win, though a bit controversial, over former WEC champ Miguel Torres. In the fight, Johnson was able to score takedowns, but Torres was the one threatening to the end the fight with submissions. With the unanimous nod in favor of Johnson, the judges clearly valued Johnson and his top position. Cruz agrees.

“Miguel Torres didn’t want to be on his back,” Cruz said. “Whether he was going for submissions or not. It doesn’t mean anything. A submission doesn’t count unless you finish it.”

Cruz is five inches taller and holds a two-inch reach advantage against the five-foot-three Johnson. Size and style-wise, Johnson is comparable to Cruz’s WEC 53 challenger Joseph Benavidez.

“I think Benavidez might be even a little more powerful than Demetrious and Demetrious might have the edge on the takedown and timing. So there’s little adjustments I have to make, but for the most part I see it very similar to the Benavidez fight and that’s how I see it playing out,” Cruz said.

Despite not having the notoriety of the other UFC champions, Cruz out of Alliance MMA and Team Lloyd Irvin has come a long way from his days fighting in the WEC. A lot of progress has already been made in his UFC debut when he headlined the card over future Hall of Famers in Tito Ortiz and Wanderlei Silva.

“It gives the casual fans a reason to respect when you put on a show like me and Faber did and take on the main event role and headling the card. It’s a different level of respect and at the same time I’ve been recognized a lot more. It’s been a great ride, it’s been a lot of fun and I’m just riding it until the wheels fall off.”
