Alex “Bruce Leroy” Cacares is the future of the Bantamweight division. He easily handled Cole Escovedo at the UFC on Fox. Ultimately he won in a unanimous decision by a score of 30-27 on all three scorecards.

Past Struggles

This is the exact outcome that the 23-year-old Cacares needed to rejuvenate his career. Prior to this he had been toiling. He was fighting as a lightweight, and was a featured fighter on Season 12 of The Ultimate Fighter.

Heading into this fight he was 6-4 as a professional and 0-2 in the UFC.

What He Proved

Cacares proved that when he is not overpowered by bigger fighters that he has elite athleticism. He was fast, explosive and dangerous.

He mixed kicks with two and three-punch combinations with skill. It will be hard for any fighter to match his athleticism.

Opponent

Cacares performance was especially impressive considering the talent and the experience of his opponent.

The 29-year-old Escovedo is a former WEC champ, and he has seldom found so little success against any fighter.

“Bruce Leroy,” who is never at a loss for words knows this was a statement win.

Reaction

Here is Cacares following the fight, as quoted on Yahoo.com:

I feel great and I don’t think it has all registered yet. This was my third fight under the UFC banner and considering that I lost my first two I knew that tonight it was do or die.

After my last loss I felt it was my conditioning that cost me the win. House, the cut-man, told me I needed to work on my endurance and he gave me a list with some different sprints to do. I think those definitely helped me get the victory tonight.  It’s my dream to fight in the UFC and I want to make sure it lasts as long as possible.

Conclusion

“Bruce Leroy” will have to stay dedicated and focus, but he has the game to challenge the best in the sport.

Three to four more performances like this and he should be in line for a title shot, and once he gets there he will not be denied.

Jon Jones proved that he wasn’t invincible against Quinton Jackson at UFC 135. He showed some flaws, as he was unable to get into the same dominant rhythm that he was against Ryan Bader and Shogun Rua.

However, as Rampage showed the world that Jones was not invincible, Jones became even more unbeatable in my eyes. I know. It doesn’t really make sense to me either, but it happened.

Jones faced a well-conditioned and supremely motivated Jackson in this fight. Jackson was in the kind of form that once made him a champ.

He gave Jones everything he could handle, and Jones handled it.

This was an important progression in Jones’s career. Some fighters, even dominant ones, simply aren’t able to recover when another talented fighter knocks them off their game or rhythm.

Jones weathered the storm, stayed the course and ultimately scored a convincing win. This is a key and underrated quality for any fighter.

It is that ability to stay confident and calm and still attack like a surgeon—even when an opponent knocks them off of their game plan—that few fighters possess.

It is this quality that is going to lead to Jones’s continued success and domination. There is not another light heavyweight around that can combat Jones.

Jones is a complete fighter.

He can outbox, out-clinch and out-wrestle almost every fighter alive—and the few that can match or beat him in one area, will not be his equal in the other two.

UFC 135 Live Steaming: Where to Watch Youthful Jones Take Down Rampage

If you are looking for a poignant story amongst the fights at UFC 135, you can do no better than Jon Jones vs. Rampage Jackson in a Light Heavyweight bout. One era will battle another for the pride and prestige of the title.

Quinton Jackson has done little rampaging as of late. After a loss to Rashad Evans, he took victories against Lyoto Machida and Matt Hamill to the distance.

Many are under the impression that Jackson has stagnated as a fighter, a plausible opinion for a man that has been in the sport for as along as he has.

On Sunday, he will be taking on the new bad boy of the sport. Jon Jones is as complete as they come in his size and build.

Jones’ style is versatile and will take Jackson’s complete wits to maneuver around. Trust me when I say that you don’t want to miss a moment of this fight. Here is where you can catch all the drama.

Fight Info

The event is set for Saturday, September 24th and will start at 6 p.m. EST.

All of the fights will be available by pay-per-view. They will also be available by streaming at UFC.tv, Yahoo! Sports, UStream, Android or iPhone for $44.99.

The preliminary fights starting at 8 p.m. EST will also be on Spike TV.

End of an Era

What has me hopeful for Jones retaining the title is his work ethic. Jackson has never been known as a workhorse int he gym.

Jones deems his task as a simple matter of out working his opponent.

I’ve simplified my playbook a little. I’m still working on a 1,000 different kicks but I’ve also tried to work one kick a thousand times. You beat Rampage Jackson in the gym; you beat him because you want it more in the gym for months. That’s why I feel the fight has already been won.

Meanwhile, Jackson was left to mutter “For recent fights, it has been hard to work one hundred percent and I am a person if I am not motivated, I am unmotivatable. But no one has needed to try to motivate me for this fight; I want my belt back.”

I will take the fighter that doesn’t rely on flipping a switch, and would rather train until he can’t feel his limbs. That sort of work ethic is needed in a bout of this magnitude.

Jackson is still a great fighter. That is an assumption that Jones has done well to work under. on Saturday, we will see that hard work pays off.

The main cards for UFC 135 are full of captivating action. The headliner is undoubtedly the title fight betweeen Jon Jones and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson

This is Jones’ first defense of his UFC light heavyweight title. He has been amazing in his young career, and will look to assert his wrestling advantage over former champ Rampage Jackson.

As fun as that matchup is certain to be, I am just as hyped for two other bouts.

Takanori Gomi will be taking on Nate Diaz in the 155-pound division. Gomi will be looking to recapture some of the magic that has made him one of the sport’s best fighters. Gomi has been struggling with effects of aging lately. He is just 1-2 in his last three fights in the octagon. A loss to Diaz will likely lead to Gomi’s retirement. You can never count out the heart of a champion though.

The great Matt Hughes is in a similar position.

Hughes will be taking on Josh Koscheck. Hughes storied career includes winning the belt twice. He also had an impressive seven title defenses during those two runs.

Hughes Last time in the octagon Hughes looked sluggish last time in the octagon against BJ Penn. It took Penn all of 21 seconds to defeat Hughes.

If Hughes doesn’t perform a lot better in this one, it could very well be his last time in the octagon.
