The Ultimate Fighter 21 returned this week with the Blackzilians up and American Top Team looking to get a win on the board. Also, the rivalry looked to amp up from the already meltdown levels they are at.

This week, the strategy was clear for ATT: win. After two of their top prospects faltered against the Blackzilians, they elected to have former World Series of Fighting champion Steve Carl represent them in the third 25-point fight.

As for the Blackzilians, they went with another one of their top fighters, Valdir “BBMonstro” Araujo. ATT owner Dan Lambert again pointed out that Araujo was a guy the Blackzilian team stole from another gym from a friend of his, in this case MMA Masters in south Florida.

There was some tension in the house, but the biggest tipping point came at the weigh-ins. Carl came in a little less than a pound over, so he elected to use the Blackzilians team sauna to cut the 3/4 of a pound.

When the Blackzilians found out, team members Tyrone Spong and Michael Johnson confronted ATT and asked them to get Carl out of their sauna. Team captain Nathan Coy stood his ground and said they would barricade him in there if they needed to.

Carl eventually made weight, but certainly looked drained, as Blackzilians owner Glenn Robinson pointed out.

Come fight time, it was another clinch-heavy affair that was pretty even throughout. However, late in the second round, Carl went for an errant takedown against the fence and Araujo slapped on a tight guillotine choke, earning the first finish of the season and another 25 points for the Blackzilians.

Going into the final 25-point fight, ATT is being shut out 75-0. They will need to do something big in the next episode or they will find themselves down three digits.

Season Results

Kamaru Usman (BLK) Mike Graves (ATT) 25 Blackzilians lead 25-0
Luiz Firmino (BLK) Uros Jurisic (ATT) 25 Blackzilians lead 50-0
Valdir Araujo (BLK) Steve Carl (ATT) 25 Blackzilians lead 75-0

Notes and Observations

  • Dana White has been very critical of most fighters so far through three fights. He has basically called the Blackzilians boring and American Top Team strategically dumb, as fighters are not listening to their corners. This episode was no different, as he trashed Carl for his lack of listening to his corner. Araujo seems like the only guy that hasn’t had the wrath of Uncle Dana yet.
  • Araujo called out ATT for drinking his wine, and it ended up being Mike Graves who was the perpetrator, though BBMonstro didn’t know. It must be so hard living with a rival team, especially when they disrespect your property and take things without asking. It was hard enough having to deal with that in college with people I liked, let alone rivals I am to be fighting!
  • I completely agree with Glenn Robinson on his assessment of Carl. He looked completely drained from the cut and I thought it reflected in his fighting ability. Carl is a much better fighter than he showed and I think he wasn’t in pristine condition.
  • The Blackzilians kicking ATT out of their sauna was a strategic, but kind of chump move. If I were them, I’d want Carl to make weight in due time so there are no excuses when they beat him. But, to each their own.
  • Can we seriously get Tyrone Spong in the UFC? It needs light heavyweights and he would be a very good midcarder to have. I don’t know if he’d sign because he’s want to continue kickboxing, but he’d be worth signing.
  • The fights this season have had a more important feel because of the home field advantage. Having the crazy atmosphere during the fights is a nice change up to the quiet and only hearing the coaches yell instructions in all of the other seasons.
  • Next week, it appears one of the ATT fighters suffers a seizure in the house, which prompts a scary situation involving paramedics. It was hard to see who, but I think it was Steve Montgomery from what I was able to gather.

The UFC is back after a weekend off with its return to Australia on Saturday. UFC Fight Night 65, which is headlined by Mark Hunt and Stipe Miocic, is heavy on talent from the area, as well as some other good fighters from around the world.

The main card is strong, but the undercard should be entertaining. A number of athletes are looking to push their stock up at this event.

The last event, UFC 186, was a good night for undercard picks. We look to continue that momentum here, as 2015 has been a so-so year for picks thus far.

With that, let’s take a look at the prelims and make some predictions for this weekend.

2015 Riley’s Record: 51-30

Last Event: UFC 186 (5-2)

This weekend, AXS TV hosts a cross-promotional showdown, as Resurrection Fighting Alliance and Legacy Fighting Championship fight for pride. It’s a concept that should be an attraction to viewers who want to determine the best regional promotion.

With that, there are possibilities of doing this again in the future, especially if the card is successful. Plenty of MMA promotions could compete with one another, so pondering some future matchups is intriguing.

The rules are there will be no UFC cross-promotion, as that would never happen. Also, at least two champion vs. champion fights would need to headline the cards, so we will do the best to build those cards around that.

With that, let’s look at five potential matchups between promotions that would tickle our fancy.

On the heels of the season premiere of The Ultimate Fighter 21, we got our second episode this week in the groundbreaking season, which features American Top Team vs. Blackzilians. It was an episode that continued the tension and competition from last week.

After a recap of the first fight of the season, a critically panned fight that saw Kamaru Usman defeat Mike Graves, we went to a team talk in which Graves expressed his disappointment. His team was there to reassure him and tell him that being undefeated is a lot of pressure and that he will be back.

We got to the fight picks by both teams pretty quickly. American Top Team went with undefeated youngster Uros Jurisic, while the Blackzilians wisely went with experience in the form of Luiz “Buscape” Firmino.

After getting their back stories, we went to a Blackzilian training session where tensions boiled over between teammates Usman and Jason Jackson. Usman stormed off, but he came back a short time later to mend fences with his teammate.

We then went to the weigh-ins, where both men made weight with no trouble. At the staredown, gym owners Dan Lambert and Glenn Robinson had yet another verbal sparring match in a tense situation which could have easily boiled over. It’s an intriguing personal vendetta that will continue to be must-see TV this season.

Come fight time, the fight went how many thought it would, as the more experienced Firmino controlled the fight and grinded on the young, inexperienced opponent. A third round was not needed, as all three judges gave Firmino the fight unanimously after two.

The win put the Blackzilians up 50-0 this season, but it again failed to impress UFC president Dana White. He again hated how the two fighters failed to really go for it when this is their stage to show fans they really want it.

Season Results

Winner Loser Points Total
Kamaru Usman (BLK) Mike Graves (ATT) 25 Blackzilians lead 25-0
Luiz Firmino (BLK) Uros Jurisic (ATT) 25 Blackzilians lead 50-0

Notes and Observations

  • Two episodes, two boring fights. I really hope that’s not an indication for the rest of the season because the team vs. team setup is attractive, but if the fights keep being this unimpressive, I feel viewers will again turn on this season of the show.
  • I really question ATT for picking Jurisic this early in the competition. When you’re fighting for home-gym advantage and on this point system, and you know they are probably putting up some of their better fighters early, he should have gone with experience and let Jurisic continue to develop and get ready. Putting in a guy like Steve Carl or Nathan Coy would have been the way to go, in my opinion.
  • I know it would never happen, but how awesome would it be if some sort of combat sport was the coach’s challenge this season. Imagine Lambert and Robinson, two guys who hate each other, having to box or grapple for the coach’s challenge. That would be amazing.
  • I am officially making a position to change Luiz Firmino’s nickname from “Buscape” to “You Know.” He says it about 571 times per sentence, and the guy writing in the English subtitles made sure to include it every singe time.
  • If you’re a fan of drama, next week looks to be a good one to watch. It appears a fighter misses weight slightly and has to use the other team’s sauna, sparking a heated battle between teams.

The UFC strawweight roster has added a new face to the division, and it’s a very familiar one.

Ariel Helwani on UFC Tonight reported that former Invicta Atomweight Champion Michelle Waterson has signed with the UFC to compete in their 115-pound division. It’s a welcome addition to a competitive division, as Waterson can add even more star power to that division.

At 12-4, Waterson was a premier atomweight in the world, owning an impressive resume in fighting in and out of Invicta. She achieved championship status by taking the belt from now-UFC fighter Jessica Penne, defended it against Yasuko Tamada and eventually lost it to now-champ Herica Tiburcio.

Waterson, known as “The Karate Hottie,” is known for her technical striking and underrated ground game. What will obviously help her in the UFC is her undeniable looks, something that the UFC seems to push through the roof, as seen in women like Paige VanZant.

Training out of Jackson-Winklejohn MMA, Waterson works with one of the best gyms in the world, especially when it comes to female talent. She trains with some top fighters on a daily basis, which should prepare her well for this UFC stint.

Looking forward into her tenure, Waterson enters a fray of fighters who have proven to be ultra tough and competitive. From champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk to unheralded contender Maryna Moroz to out-of-nowhere success Randa Markos, Waterson will not face any easy fights.

Her size may be an issue going forward, or the lack of having to cut an extra 10 pounds could benefit her. She has great movement on the feet, is lightning-quick and has underrated power for a person of her size.

Former atomweights who have moved to the UFC’s strawweight division have seen mixed results. While Penne has seen some success, fighters like Alex Chambers and Lisa Ellis are still looking to find their footing in the division.

Waterson has yet to have an opponent named or a debut date set with the UFC. However, there is no doubt that fans anxiously await the debut of “The Karate Hottie.”
