Lyoto Machida vs. C.B. Dollaway: What We Learned from Middleweight Tilt

The end of 2014 saw the UFC close out the year in Brazil live on Fox Sports 1. The card, which was headlined by former UFC champ Lyoto Machida and CB Dollaway, was an interesting event that saw finishes and crazy fights in various spots throughout the card.

In the main event, Machida looked to get back into title contention by taking out dark horse Dollaway. In what most people expected, Machida quickly took out Dollaway with a devastating body kick and follow-up punches.

It was a win that many expected, but what did we learn from this bout? Let’s take a look in the aftermath of this UFC main event.

What We’ll Remember About the Fight

The accuracy of that body kick is what we’ll remember. Not only did Machida plaster Dollaway’s body with that killer body shot, but he also put it so accurately under the defenses of his opponent.

The sound it made is also memorable. The minute it landed, it sounded like a gun went off in the arena. That’s how devastating the shot was, making it no wonder why Dollaway folded like an accordion in the aftermath.

What We Learned About Machida

This is really nothing new from The Dragon, who has been finishing dudes with kicks throughout his UFC career. Dollaway joins guys such as Randy Couture and Mark Munoz as guys Machida has downed with kicks in the Octagon.

We are still learning, though, that middleweight is the correct weight class for Machida. He is a good size and has shown to be successful thus far in his 185-pound campaign.

What We Learned About Dollaway

We learned is that was too big of a step up for Dollaway. The UFC needed an opponent to headline opposite Machida on this Brazilian card, and Dollaway stepped up. However, it was in the deep end, and he couldn’t swim.

He’s a midcarder and likely always will be. This performance just reminded us of that.

What’s Next for Machida?

There are a ton of options for Machida going forward. Unfortunately for Machida, it won’t be the title anytime soon.

The best matchup to make is a showdown with Luke Rockhold, the former Strikeforce champion. Both men can throw down on the feet and are no slouches on the ground.

It’s a high-profile matchup that would entertain fans thoroughly.

What’s Next for Dollaway?

For Dollaway, a step back into the midcard is warranted. He was given a big spot in the main event and showed us basically nothing.

A bout with a fellow fighter coming off a loss in James Te Huna could serve as a good comeback fight for both men. It’s an interesting stylistic matchup that could grace the main card of a Fight Night card.

You could also stick him in there with the loser of Brad Tavares-Nate Marquardt. The matchup would take two top-25 fighters and have them fight to get back into the win column.

UFC Fight Night 58: 3 Fights to Make for Renan Barao

The UFC closed out its 2014 in Brazil, as UFC Fight Night 58 aired Saturday night. Headlined by middleweight contenders Lyoto Machida and CB Dollaway, the card was heavy on Brazilian talent and up-and-comers.

In the co-main event, former UFC bantamweight champion Renan Barao met Canadian fighter Mitch Gagnon in a three-round affair. After two rounds of relative inactivity, Barao was able to ground Gagnon and secure an arm-triangle choke to get the finish.

The win was a comeback for Barao, who lost the UFC title in his last fight to TJ Dillashaw. This was a good recovery fight, as he looks to get his feet back under him.

Who should he fight next? Here are three fights Barao can take going forward.

TJ Dillashaw/Dominick Cruz Winner

Although not confirmed, it’s pretty much assumed that UFC champ TJ Dillashaw will be taking on former champion Dominick Cruz in his next fight. If that’s the case, Barao will likely have to wait until that fight clears up to stake his claim at a title shot.

However, Barao can sit and wait, knowing that there is nobody else in front of him. If Dillashaw and Cruz throw down in the first or early second quarter of the year, Barao could take the rest and be healthy for the winner of that bout.

In Dillashaw, Barao would be aiming to redeem himself after the one-sided drubbing that saw the American take his belt. In Cruz, it would be a fight that fans wanted to see while Barao was still champion.

It’s really win-win for the Brazilian, in theory.

Raphael Assuncao

If Barao is forced to take another fight before a title shot, there are definitely a few guys who could keep him busy. One of those men is a fellow Brazilian by the name of Raphael Assuncao.

Assuncao has been on a surge recently, rushing up the rankings by knocking off credible opponent after credible opponent. He even has a win over Dillashaw, albeit controversial, which makes Assuncao a special case in the bantamweight division.

Pitting Assuncao and Barao against each other could serve as a No. 1 contender’s bout. The winner gets the winner of Cruz-Dillashaw, and the loser goes back to the drawing board.

Iuri Alcantara

One last man Barao could see in his near future is Brazilian, tough and skilled. It sounds like a mirror image, which is why Iuri Alcantara would be a suitable opponent for him.

If you are looking for a main-card barnburner that will have fans on their feet, it’s Barao-Alcantara. Both men throw heat, make their bouts exciting and are in the upper echelon of their division.

Alcantara would be an underdog in the fight, but he has a style that could give Barao problems. That’s why it could be the under-the-radar matchup that fans could get behind.
