Chan Sung Jung vs. Akira Corassani Set to Co-Headline in Sweden

Not long after the Gunnar Nelson-Rick Story fight was announced as the headline bout of the UFC’s return to Sweden, UFC Fight Night 53 picked up a co-main event between featherweights Chan Sung Jung and Akira Corassani.

The event, which airs exclusively on Fight Pass, takes place in the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm on October 4. The European-heavy card includes a number of fighters from the host country.

For Jung, this marks his first fight since August of last year, when he was defeated by UFC Featherweight champion Jose Aldo in the headliner of UFC 163. After Jung injured his shoulder during the fight, Aldo finished off the “Korean Zombie” with strikes to retain his title.

Before the title fight, Jung was on the most impressive streak of his career. After pulling off the first-ever twister submission in the UFC on Leonard Garcia, Jung knocked out Mark Hominick in seven seconds and choked out Dustin Poirier in a Fight of the Year to earn his title shot.

As for Corassani, he has put together a solid resume since competing on The Ultimate Fighter 14. After winning a controversial split decision over Andy Ogle in their respective debuts, he was impressive against Robbie Peralta. He then took a DQ win over an overly aggressive Maximo Blanco, before getting knocked out in his most recent outing against Poirier.

This figures to be an all-out brawl between two fighters known to put themselves all out there. Not only does Corassani have a Fight of the Night under his belt against Poirier, Jung has five fight-night bonuses between his six appearances in UFC and WEC.

The winner of this fight figures to find himself up among the other title challengers in the division. They may not be the next contender to the UFC title, but they will put themselves in position to get there sooner rather than later.

The UFC is home to some of the best fighters in the world. However, it does not possess all of the best talent in mixed martial arts.

There are a number of top stars outside the UFC who could easily be in contention if they were in the company. They are housed by such organizations as Bellator, World Series of Fighting, One FC and other top companies.

So, who are the three best fighters in each division outside the UFC? Let’s take a look.

Note: The women’s strawweight division will not be included, as the division is still in its infancy.

This Saturday, the World Series of Fighting returns to NBC Sports with its 12th card to date. Headlined by lightweights Luis Palomino and Lewis Gonzalez, the card is looking to entertain fans and further draw attention to the young promotion.

The card also possesses names like UFC veteran Ronny Markes, Bellator vet Alexis Vila and WSOF middleweight tournament participant Elvis Mutapcic. Though these aren’t the biggest names, it’s usually these types of cards that lead to great fights.

So, what should you expect from this weekend’s WSOF 12? Let’s take a look at the card and give you some insight.

Fight Card

Lightweight Luis Palomino vs. Lewis Gonzalez
Light Heavyweight Ronny Markes vs. Cully Butterfield
Bantamweight Alexis Vila vs. Brandon Hempleman
Middleweight Elvis Mutapcic vs. Kelvin Tiller
Bantamweight Bryson Hansen vs. Matt Sayles
Lightweight Jimmy Spicuzza vs. Lucas Montoya
Welterweight Jorge Lopez vs. Danny Davis Jr.
Bantamweight Adam Acquaviva vs. Cody Maltais
Featherweight Soslan Abanakov vs. Bryson Gutches

Top Contender on the Horizon

Though it’s not confirmed, one has to assume the winner of a non-title lightweight main event in WSOF would become the top contender to Justin Gaethje‘s title. With that in mind, the bout between Lewis Gonzalez and Luis Palomino is extremely important.

Neither man is a huge name in this sport. Palomino is best known for his stint in Bellator, while Gonzalez was an unknown before beating down Antonio McKee.

Both men are now front and center on the national stage. It’s a bout that many people question as the main event of a major organization, but it is likely to be entertaining.

This fight will be exciting and important to the WSOF‘s lightweight division going forward.

Established Vets vs. Hungry Up-and-Comers

UFC vet Ronny Markes and WSOF vet Elvis Mutapcic are established vets set to take on hungry up-and-comers Cully Butterfield and Kelvin Tiller, respectively. They are interesting matchups that could have some big implications in their divisions.

Organizations like WSOF make stars in this sport, as they turn little-known fighters into widely known commodities. Guys like Gaethje, Marlon Moraes and others are just a couple of the fighters who have gained great momentum since starting with the company.

Now, fighters like Butterfield, Tiller and Mutapcic have a chance to push their stock through the ceiling. Impressive performances and big wins are ways for these guys to get their names more recognized.

Strong at 43

Cuban-born fighter Alexis Vila is a professional MMA fighter. He is also 43 years old. That is astonishing, considering MMA is a young man’s game.

He has fought several times in WSOF, but his biggest claim to fame is knocking Joe Warren senseless in Bellator. Since then, he has failed to find great consistency, but he has still been a strong competitor.

He now takes on Brandon Hempleman, a tough-as-nails fighter who earned his WSOF spot with a gritty performance. He took some of Moraes‘s best shots and kept coming back for more.

Vila’s combination of wrestling and power punching is vital to his game. Can he put down Hempleman, or will the younger buck get a major win on his resume?

Weak TV Ratings

Unfortunately, WSOF should expect some low TV ratings Saturday night. Even with the UFC not holding a show until the 16th, the lack of name recognition really hurts WSOF.

It’s a horrible way to look at things, but it’s true. UFC has a bigger reach on Fox Sports 1 than WSOF has on NBC Sports, and the UFC only pulls around half a million viewers per show. WSOF will have a much grimmer outlook.

Full Card Predictions

Lewis Gonzalez over Luis Palomino

Ronny Markes over Cully Butterfield

Alexis Vila over Brandon Hempleman

Elvis Mutapcic over Kelvin Tiller

Bryson Hansen over Matt Sayles

Jimmy Spicuzza over Lucas Montoya

Jorge Lopez over Danny Davis Jr.

Cody Maltais over Adam Acquaviva

Soslan Abanakov over Bryson Gutches

Leslie Smith and the 3 Most Underrated Women’s Fighters in MMA Right Now

MMA fans are finally getting to notice women in the sport as they gain more exposure through more opportunities. Stars have been born, with women like Ronda Rousey and Cris Cyborg leading the charge.

However, for all the women we know, especially in the UFC where they actually get some exposure, a ton of them don’t get the attention they deserve. These women fight for recognition every time they step in the cage to compete.

For all the famous and best fighters we know, there are underrated women who are waiting for a chance to put their name on the map. Here are the four most underrated women in the sport right now.

Leslie Smith

Before the UFC, not many fans knew what Leslie Smith was capable of. In fact, most judged Smith on her late-notice debut performance against Sarah Kaufman, where she looked very lackluster.

In reality, fans were completely wrong about Smith, as they found out in her most recent performance against Jessamyn Duke. She completely squashed Duke in the first round, using a 20-plus strike combination in what can only be called a thing of beauty.

People take a look at Smith’s record and question her. Sure, her record isn’t the sexiest in the sport, but look at her losses. She lost a flyweight title fight to Barb Honchak, a bout to top featherweight Ediane Gomes and two fights against Sarah Kaufman, the first of which was a controversial decision that people thought Smith deserved to win.

The Cesar Gracie product is exciting and underrated. In fact, she may be the most underrated bantamweight on the UFC roster right now.

DeAnna Bennett

When Julianna Pena was crowned the first female winner of The Ultimate Fighter, a star was born. She had an aggressive style and a well-rounded skill set, giving fans hope that she could be great.

Flashback to 2013, almost 18 months ago. Pena dropped a unanimous decision to DeAnna Bennett, a female competitor who, at this point, does not nearly have the recognition that Pena has.

Bennett, who is undefeated at 4-0, has floated between 125 and 135. In those fights, she has looked very good, finally earning herself a shot in Invicta against top 125er Michelle Ould.

Even though she likely earned a shot in the UFC by choking out TUF veteran Colleen Schneider in her most recent outing, Bennett will continue to fight on and gain momentum. It will turn her from her current status of underrated to a more comfortable status of famous in the fight community.

Pannie Kianzad

Featherweights are not generally well-recognized in the MMA community. They don’t have spotlight fights anymore and outside of a couple of women, most are not well-known fighters.

For every Cyborg and Marloes Coenen, there are women like Pannie Kianzad who are not getting the due credit they deserve. In fact, Kianzad is among the most underrated women in the sport.

Hailing from Sweden, Kianzad has proved to be a ferocious grappler and top-game fighter with big punches on the ground and the ability to look for submissions easily. She is also undefeated at this point, beating some of the best women Europe has to offer.

Her lack of exposure in America is a big reason she is not fully recognized by fans. That is why, despite being a high-ranked featherweight, she is incredibly underrated by fans.

Kalindra Faria

Kalindra Faria is another woman like Pannie Kianzad in that she isn’t known by most fans despite her high ranking and status in her division. The reason for that, though, could be that most of the strawweight division is focused on TUF 20 and the crowning of a new UFC champion, and Faria is left in Brazil taking fight after fight to build herself up.

Faria is an aggressive, ferocious, well-rounded fighter who has a schedule that would make Donald Cerrone jealous. She competes in high volume, taking several fights in several months to great success.

For every Felice Herrig and Rose Namajunas, whom we easily recognize for their time in the spotlight, we have a woman like Faria with the skills to compete but a lack of fame nevertheless. She is definitely a woman with UFC-level skills who could deepen the 115-pound division.

For now, Faria will remain among the most underrated women in the sport. However, at 15-3, if she keeps bolstering her record and remains successful, fans will take notice sooner rather than later.
