The Ultimate Fighter 20 does not start until later in 2014, but WMMA fans are already buzzing over the season.

The main question at this point, though, is about casting, as 11 women are already announced and five more will be casted.

Upon the announcement of the season, I wrote a piece that made the case for five women who should be added to the season’s roster. With this article, I update my picks based on recent events and new possibilities.

Now, let’s take a look back at the five I selected before and update them with a new set of faces who should make it onto the show.

Original List

Name Record Status
Stephanie Eggink 4-1 On
Alida Gray 4-1 Off
Amber Stautzenberger 4-2 Off
Heather Clark 6-4 On
Lisa Ellis 15-8 On

As you can see, of the five ladies I picked, three stay while the other two are off the table.

Alida Gray is the first to be taken out of consideration due to the fact that she has since signed and competed with World Series of Fighting. One has to assume she is tied with them for at least another fight. She recently fought for the inaugural women’s title against Jessica Aguilar—albeit in a losing effort.

As for Amber Stautzenberger, the promising prospect was recently beaten rather quickly by veteran Lynn Alvarez, who should be in consideration for a spot on the show. Stautzenberger definitely has a future in this sport, but after that loss she should rebuild herself slowly and take to Invicta to rebound.

The other three should still be considered for the show.

Lisa Ellis is a longtime veteran of the sport whose beef with Rose Namajunas over Twitter could relay nicely onto the show. She is skilled and experienced, and the show could re-surge her career, which is currently off track at the moment due to her becoming a mother.

Heather Clark is another woman with beef coming onto the show that could make it drama-filled and interesting. Clark, who was competing for XFC, got permission to try out for the show (see tweet). Her skill and natural beef with Felice Herrig could make for interesting TV.

Lastly, Stephanie Eggink should still be in consideration for the cast. The current XFC champ has an abundance of skill and the gold to back it up. It is not known if XFC will let her try out, considering she is the champ of their organization, but here’s to hoping they will.

New Additions

Name Record Notables Wins
Jessica Penne 11-2

Naho Sugiyama, Lisa Ellis, Angela Magana, Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc, Amy Davis

Justine Kish 4-0 Munah Holland, Randa Markos, Christine Stanley

The two women who will now be added to the likes of Clark, Ellis and Eggink are former Invicta 105-pound champion Jessica Penne and RFA veteran Justine Kish.

Penne, who tweeted that she will be trying out for the season, is a former champion with a good resume, camp and skill set at her disposal. She was big at 105 pounds, meaning that a move to 115 wouldn’t make her that small in comparison to the rest of the cast.

She is incredibly well-rounded but showed in her win over Naho Sugiyama that her ground game is to be feared. She tapped out a well-respected grappler with a beautiful triangle choke and can take that accolade in with her to the open tryouts.

Kish is sort of a dark horse at 115 pounds to make the competition. The one thing she really has going for her, other than her undefeated record, is her association with RFA, an unofficial feeder organization for the UFC.

Kish is gifted in the stand-up department—her Muay Thai skills especially impress crowds. She is coming off a big win over the weekend against fellow 115-pound prospect Randa Markos, where she wowed the crowd en route to an impressive unanimous decision victory.

Both women would be great additions and provide depth to an already star-studded cast.

UFC on Fox 10 Results: 3 Fights for Gabriel Gonzaga to Take Next

A pair of heavyweights looking to sneak in the heavyweight title picture met in Chicago, as Stipe Miocic took on Gabriel Gonzaga in the co-main event of UFC on Fox 10. It promised to be a fight that wouldn’t reach the judges.

Gonzaga looked to throw heat early on but tired quickly because of the pace in which he was throwing at. From there, he was outboxed by Miocic and unable to get a takedown.

Where does Gonzaga go from here? He lost a decision to Miocic in uninspiring fashion, where his cardio failed him massively.

Here are three fights Gonzaga can take next in an attempt to get back into the win column.

Josh Barnett

Josh Barnett is coming off a loss at UFC 168 to quickly rising star Travis Browne. Gonzaga is coming off a loss at UFC on Fox 10 to another quickly rising star, Miocic.

It’s a match made in heaven.

Both Barnett and Gonzaga are ground fighters, which could make for a fun grappling battle. Watching Barnett’s catch wrestling against Gonzaga’s BJJ would be a thing of beauty, especially when we find out whose ground game is superior.

The winner moves back into the title picture. The loser scrambles to pick up the pieces.

Roy Nelson

Roy Nelson was recently outworked by Miocic. Gonzaga was recently outworked by Miocic.

This could also be a match made in heaven.

Nelson and Gonzaga are both power punchers on the feet with good jiu-jitsu to rely on. Nelson could definitely turn out the lights on Gonzaga, but could Gonzaga knock out the concrete-chinned Nelson?

I don’t know. But, I’d like to find out.

Antonio Silva

Antonio Silva was recently busted on a failed drug test after a classic against Mark Hunt in Australia. He may be out for a bit, but when he returns, Gonzaga could be a good matchup.

Both men are Brazilian and could be a nice addition to any card in the South American country. Both men can slug it out or battle on the mat; either way, it could be entertaining.

Either way, one man needs to get back in the win column. This matchup could definitely make some sense.

UFC on Fox 10: What We Learned from Darren Elkins vs. Jeremy Stephens

The main card of UFC on Fox tonight kicked off in the featherweight division, as noted brawler Jeremy Stephens took on veteran grinder and top-10 featherweight Darren Elkins. It was a midwest battle that took native Iowan Stephens and planted him opposite the cage of Indiana’s own Elkins.

The fight saw Stephens dominate the standup with power punches and good takedown defense. He mauled Elkins on the feet, eventually taking a decision over the top-10 ranked Elkins

So, what did we learn from this important featherweight tilt? Let’s take a look.

What We’ll Remember About This Fight

We will remember this as the fight Elkins couldn’t get down. Many speculated Elkins would be able to take Stephens down on command, but he struggled to get him down all night. Maybe because Stephens threw some nasty leg kicks that slowed him down.

Stephens’ takedown defense was statistically not great coming into this fight, but he showed he could stave off Elkins tonight.

What We Learned About Stephens

He has improved his takedown defense and he made the right call dropping to 145. He is now 3-0 in the division, including a one-sided beating of Estevan Payan, a brutal knockout of Rony Jason and a beating of Darren Elkins.

If he has truly tightened up his takedown defense, he could be a threat at 145 pounds. We will see going forward if he is truly a top-10 featherweight.

What We Learned About Elkins

His striking hasn’t improved as much as we thought. We were impressed with Elkins when he finished Antonio Carvalho on the feet not long ago, but as seen against Stephens, he still has a ways to go.

Wrestling is his bread and butter, but he couldn’t get Stephens down. That was why he wasn’t able to get much going against the brutish Stephens.

What’s Next for Stephens?

Stephens has to be considered top 10 after beating a guy who was in the top 10. Therefore, he should get a top opponent.

Give him Dustin Poirier in his next bout. That fight would produce fireworks and push one man closer to the title picture.

What’s Next for Elkins?

Elkins is now 6-2 as a UFC featherweight, nothing to be ashamed of. However, he needs to get back to the drawing board.

He is now outside the top 10 and needs a solid rebound fight. A guy who could give him a good challenge would be Nik Lentz, a man in a similar spot with a similar fighting style.

The UFC returned on Saturday night with UFC on Fox 10 in Chicago. Headlined by Benson Henderson and Josh Thomson, it promised to be an exciting, action-packed night of fights.

Before the main card aired, the prelims came with a bunch of up-and-coming talent gracing the undercard. From future champs like Sergio Pettis to first-time fighters like Mike Rhodes, the prelims were a glimpse into the future of several key UFC divisions.

What did we learn from these prelim fights? Let’s take a look at some of the biggest learning points of the night.

We Should Give Nikita Krylov a Mulligan

Coming into UFC on Fox 10, Nikita Krylov was heavily criticized for his unimpressive debut against Soa Palelei. In fact, he was a 4-1 underdog coming into his prelim fight with Walt Harris.

That changed in 25 seconds of combat. Krylov pushed forward quickly, attacking the bigger, more athletic Harris with a variety of kicks. Then, like a bat out of hell, Krylov threw a high kick that nailed Harris in the side of the head and left him staggered. A few follow-up punches later and Krylov was victorious.

Perhaps a mulligan is in order for Krylov. Sure, he looked terrible against Palelei, but his swift drubbing of Harris has quickly put him back in the good graces of fans.

We will see how he does when he re-steps up in competition. At 21 years old, he has a lot of room to improve.

Daron Cruickshank’s Kicks are Fun to Watch

Daron Cruickshank didn’t respect Mike Rio’s stand-up coming into this bout on UFC on Fox. At the end of Round 2, he showed why his stand-up is superior.

After taking Rio down midway through the second, Cruickshank almost got caught in a heel hook. He escaped by the skin of his teeth and looked to be holding out for the bell at the end of the round.

Then it happened.

Cruickshank planted, threw a spinning heel kick and blistered Rio in the head with brute force. A couple of follow-up shots later and Cruickshank was the victor by TKO.

Watch Cruickshank’s fights if you can. All of his kicking techniques are beautiful and fun to watch. He is definitely a solid midcarder in the UFC’s 155-pound division.

You Can’t Do the Running Man When You Are Trailing on the Scorecards

For two rounds, Hugo Viana was throwing straight heat at Junior Hernandez. In the third round, he definitely pumped the brakes a bit.

Frustrated that his aggression was not forcing enough action from the Brazilian, Hernandez resorted to taunting and doing the “Running Man,” as made famous by Nate Quarry.

Here’s the thing. I don’t mind taunting and stuff like that in the cage, but if you are clearly behind on the scorecards and you do that, you should probably finish the fight.

Instead, Hernandez was bested on the cards, dropping him to 0-2 in his UFC career. Both losses were very unimpressive.

It could be time for a trip back to the minor leagues for Mr. Hernandez.

Eddie Wineland is Still a Top-Five Bantamweight

It took longer than most people estimated, but Eddie Wineland finished Yves Jabouin to secure a win in his comeback fight from his UFC Bantamweight Championship loss to Renan Barao.

Doing some good damage on the feet, Wineland dropped Jabouin in the second round, which secured his ground-and-pound finish on the ground.

Since joining the UFC, Wineland has only lost to Joseph Benavidez, Urijah Faber and Barao. He has been a buzzsaw otherwise, showing that despite those losses, he is still in the top five of the division.

Expect him to continue to get big fights while he is tenured in the UFC.

The UFC Must Build Sergio Pettis Slowly

Pettis looked good in his sophomore UFC effort. He was 20 seconds from victory. Then, Alex Caceres pulled out a rear-naked choke, and Pettis was undefeated no more.

This was a good test for Pettis, who sincerely looked great throughout the fight. He just got caught, simple as that.

For Caceres, it’s a huge win over a fighter who has name recognition. For Pettis, it shows that he needs to be built up slowly by the UFC.

He is just 20 years of age. His matchup with Caceres was a good one, but he will need to build himself up as he improves against low-to-mid-ranked bantamweights.

Also, I think a drop to flyweight would be good. He looked tiny in there against Caceres.

Before that, though, we have some fun prelims. A number of up-and-coming prospects, including Sergio Pettis and Mike Rhodes, will strut their stuff before the main card in an attempt to move up the ladder.

After a strong start to the season with a 5-1 record at UFC Fight Night in Singapore, I tripped up big time at UFC Fight Night in Atlanta. We will see if I bounce back with these prelim predictions.

Without further ado, here are the UFC on Fox 10 prelim predictions.
