Cain Velasquez drubbed Junior dos Santos to keep his title, while Daniel Cormier and Gabriel Gonzaga also took key victories. The latter two took wins over Roy Nelson and Shawn Jordan, respectively.

UFC 166 was one of the all-time great cards in MMA history. Between classics like Diego Sanchez-Gilbert Melendez and the many knockouts, fans were treated to a great night of fights.

Although the usual suspects delivered and kept their star shining bright, there were three fighters who emerged out of the ashes and made themselves stars. They used their debuts to rocket their stock and show fans they are legit.

Here are those three men (and women) that emerged as stars through the thicket that was UFC 166.

Kyoji Horiguchi

Japanese buzzsaw Kyoji Horiguchi found himself in trouble early at UFC 166, but quickly turned things around. Despite being the much smaller man, he found his inner warrior and smashed Dustin Pague into oblivion with his powerful punching ability.

Horiguchi, a disciple of Kid Yamamoto, showed shades of his fellow countryman through his stance, style and power. Once given the opportunity, he was able to connect on Pague‘s chin and end his night in violent fashion.

This is a guy to keep your eye on, especially if he makes the move to flyweight like he should.

Andre Fili

Team Alpha Male got another win in the Octagon, this time in the form of debutant Andre Fili.

Fili came out aggressive and strong once the bell rang. His striking looked crisp, clean and nasty, as he hurt Jeremy Larsen on multiple occasions.

Sure, he missed weight. But, he dropped over 30 pounds in just 12 days and missed the required weight very narrowly.

Fili has become a man to watch at 145, especially with his star-making performance at 145. It will be interesting to see what he can do with a full training camp.

Jessica Eye

The women of MMA are finally starting to get the recognition they deserve, and Bellator vet Jessica Eye gave fans another reason to pay attention to the ladies with her performance at UFC 166.

Eye, taking on a heavy favorite in Sarah Kaufman, used a healthy dose of jabs and technical boxing to earn a close split decision over her foe. It was a shock to many, as Eye is a normal flyweight moving up to bantamweight to get this rare opportunity with the UFC.

Her win over Kaufman earned her top-10 status. It also earned her a wider fan base that has made her a star among the MMA community.

UFC 166 came like a hurricane to viewers, providing fans with one of the best cards in recent memories. From the war between Diego Sanchez and Gilbert Melendez to the numerous finishes the card provided, fans got their money’s worth when it came down to it all.

We had some great knockouts and some awesome scraps. I have a feeling that people who paid for this awesome event had no regrets when it came to shelling out money.

Here is a recap of each fight-night bonus from the great UFC 166.

Submission of the Night: Tony Ferguson

There was no competition, but it did not take away from the D’arce choke Tony Ferguson used to achieve victory.

It only lasted one round, but the fight between Ferguson and Mike Rio provided a memorable moment for UFC 166. Rio was adamant about obtaining the takedown, but Ferguson countered with a nasty D’arce choke.

It was equally as beautiful as it was devastating. It had Rio tapping like there was no tomorrow.

Knockout of the Night: John Dodson

It came as no surprise, as John Dodson took home the bonus check for best knockout of the night.

Dodson took on a tough opponent in Darrell Montague, but he made sure the fight did not leave the first round. He used crisp, precision striking to find his counterpart’s chin and put him down.

The man deserves another title shot after that win. Whether he does or not doesn’t matter much, as Dodson took home an extra check for his awesome KO.

Fight of the Night: Diego Sanchez-Gilbert Melendez

What can I say about this fight, in all honesty. We had ourselves a Fight of the Year candidate.

Diego Sanchez and Gilbert Melendez decided to take the gloves off (not literally) and throw down hard. What resulted was one of the best fights I have seen in recent times.

Sanchez had a new eyebrow and Melendez had a great win. Nobody lost, in all actuality.

Daniel Cormier vs. Roy Nelson: What We Learned from UFC 166 Co-Main Event

The co-main event of UFC 166 saw Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier take on a slimmed-down Roy Nelson in the heavyweight division. It was a fight that could be the last heavyweight bout for Cormier, who is likely heading to 205 next.

The fight was not amazing, but that may be because it followed up a Fight of the Year candidate in Diego Sanchez vs. Gilbert Melendez. That being said, Cormier took the fight on all the scorecards, effectively keeping his UFC record squeaky clean.

Here is what we learned from this co-main event.

What We’ll Remember About This Fight

I would say we won’t remember much about this fight other than Cormier won. Some big punches landed, and it wasn’t the worst fight ever, but it wasn’t the most memorable scrap to date.

What We Learned About Nelson

Against top competition, Nelson falters. “Big Country” is UFC material, but he cannot get a marquee win that separates him from the pack. We’ll see where he goes from here.

What We Learned About Cormier

He is elite. His drop to 205 is intriguing, but he is not a top contender for Jon Jones. He needs a win or two at light heavyweight to get that shot. He has the tools but still needs improvement, or the top-tier guys will slice and dice him.

What’s Next for Nelson

He needs to take a step back now that he is on a two-fight skid. I would say a bout with Ben Rothwell, once he returns from suspension, would be a good scrap.

What’s Next for Cormier

He will be fighting at 205, so maybe a meeting with Alexander Gustafsson in Sweden would be a good bout. A win would get him a title shot, while a loss would put him back at the drawing board.

UFC 166: What We Learned from John Dodson vs. Darrell Montague

The UFC 166 pay-per-view kicked off and saw Greg Jackson-disciple John Dodson take on UFC debutant Darrell Montague in the flyweight division. Many thought the bout had the potential to claim the Fight of the Night bonus check.

This fight did not have to leave the first round to name a definitive winner. Dodson threw heavy leather, caught Montague’s chin and put him away via knockout.

Here is what we learned from this flyweight bout.

What We’ll Remember About This Fight

John Dodson’s power. For a little 125er, he throws power punches like a welterweight. Every punch he threw had bad intentions, and it showed from the multiple times he hurt Montague.

It was an impressive performance.

What We Learned About Dodson

He is ready for another title shot. He beat a Top 10 flyweight convincingly in the first round.

His striking is as good as it gets at flyweight, and his takedown defense is top notch. He could be a top-three flyweight in the world.

What We Learned About Montague

To be honest, we didn’t learn a whole lot other than he is tough as nails. He didn’t get a chance to show off any offense, but he showed a tremendous jaw.

He can take a punch as well as anyone. Hopefully he’ll get a good rebound fight, because Montague is a legit 125er. He just didn’t get to show it on Saturday night.

What’s Next for Dodson

He should face the winner of Demetrious Johnson vs. Joseph Benavidez for the title. If that is not an option, a showdown with the winner of Ian McCall vs. Scott Jorgensen is equally fine.

What’s Next for Montague

He needs time to rebuild in the UFC, so he has some options. I think a bout with the loser of John Lineker vs. Phil Harris would be a good rebound fight.

The co-main event of UFC Fight Night 27 saw American DonaldCerrone take on Brazilian Rafael dosAnjos in the lightweight division. It was a bout that many thought had the potential to take the Fight of the Night bonus check.

The first round saw dos Anjos hurtCerrone on the feet before riding him out from top position at the end of the stanza. The second saw both men spend time on their backs. The final round Cerrone began to come alive, making the scorecards close.

When it was all said and done, dos Anjos took a unanimous decision. Here is what we learned from the fight.

What We’ll Remember About This Fight

The fight in general. The fight had back-and-forth action and was quite entertaining.

I think the most memorable thing, though, was that Cerrone did not look like he had a sense of urgency. In a lot of his fights, he looks like a man possessed, but this fight was not one of those times. Ultimately, I think he had lackluster body language that led to a below-par performance.

What We Learned About dos Anjos

He has grown leaps and bounds in recent times. I remember when dos Anjos debuted and opened his UFC career 0-2. I thought this guy wouldn’t be around much longer, but I sure was wrong.

The Brazilian is making an argument for being in the top 10 these days. He has gone from being a jiu-jitsu guy to a full mixed martial artist.

What We Learned About Cerrone

He is inconsistent. One night, Cerrone will show up looking like a championship contender. Other nights, he just doesn’t look the part.

Cerrone will always be an exciting striker and dangerous grappler, but if you catch him on an off night, he is beatable. He needs to use his striking more aggressively moving forward to keep opponents off balance. That’s when he snags the knockout (see Dennis Siver and Charles Oliveira fights).

What’s Next for dos Anjos

He definitely deserves a top opponent. Maybe taking on a guy like Jim Miller would be a good setup for when more top-10 guys free up from their current fights. Giving him guys coming off of losses in the top 10 like Gray Maynard and Nate Diaz would not make sense yet. (Miller is coming off of a win and no contest).

What’s Next for Cerrone

He needs to take a step back again. He made up for his Anthony Pettis loss by beating down KJ Noons. Now he has to make up for this shabby defeat. Perhaps taking on fellow loser and Fight Night bonus machine Joe Lauzon would make for an all-time classic.

If you are looking for an amazing weekend of fights, UFC 166 promises to be one of the best cards of the year. Between a title fight and top talent, the card will be exciting and important to most of the weight classes in the UFC.

The card is headlined by a rubber match between UFC champion Cain Velasquez and former champ Junior dos Santos. It is a series that has seen both men take the title away from one another in devastating fashion (knockout by dos Santos, one-sided butt kicking by Velasquez).

Before we get to that, let’s take a look at the preliminary card and make some predictions.
