The UFC travels to the northeast corner of the continental 48 on Saturday, as UFC Fight Night 47 will take place as the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine.

President Dana White, who attended Hermon High School just 11 minutes west of the night’s venue, talked about the importance of bringing the UFC to Bangor, via the Portland Press Herald‘s Steve Craig:

I spend a lot of my time in Maine. I have a home in Maine and it’s been a goal of mine to bring a huge UFC fight to the state. Bangor is close to my home and when the Cross Center was being built, that was the spot to go for. If Bangor does well hopefully we can look to put one in Portland.

He certainly has a compelling card to build interest.

Ryan Bader will battle Ovince St. Preux in the night’s headliner, but Grey Maynard vs. Ross Pearson is arguably just as compelling, while Maine native Tim Boetsch takes on Brad Tavares in an important middleweight contest.

Let’s take a look at how the entire card unfolds.

Just a week after having to cancel UFC 176, Dana White and the UFC will look to build some necessary momentum Wednesday with UFC Fight Night 45.

The company will lean on veteran lightweight contenders Donald Cerrone and Jim Miller to put on a show in the main event. But there is plenty of intrigue throughout the rest of the card.

Former top prospects Edson Barboza and Evan Dunham, interestingly enough both coming off losses to Cerrone, will battle in an important lightweight battle just outside the top 10.

Alex White will attempt to accelerate his movement in the featherweight division against Lucas Martins, after winning Performance of the Night during his UFC debut in April.

John Lineker, fresh off a defeat against Ali Bagautinov, will attempt to bounce back against Alptekin Ozkilic.

Rick Story vs. Leonardo Mafra and Justin Salas vs. Joe Proctor are also on the main card, rounding out a very full night at Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City.

Let’s take a look at how all the results unfold.

Following a third-round TKO loss at the hands of Frankie Edgar Sunday night, BJ Penn decided to put an end to his UFC career.

The 35-year-old legend announced the news inside the Octagon following The Ultimate Fighter 19 finale, and Fox Sports’ Mike Chiappetta captured a quote:

UFC president Dana White commented on the decision, via MMAFighting.com:

Penn finishes his career at 16-10-2 overall. With five losses and a draw in his last seven fights, his final record doesn’t exactly do him justice.

Extremely important for the rise of UFC’s popularity, The Prodigy first appeared in the promotion at UFC 31 over 13 years ago. During that span, he has held both the UFC welterweight and lightweight titles. He was named Sports Illustrated‘s 10th-best MMA fighter of the 2000s and has won countless other awards.

ESPN.com’s Brett Okamoto recently explained one particular reason why Penn has been so immensely popular throughout his career:

A lot of mixed martial artists are popular. Few are outright loved the way Penn is. There are several reasons for it, but if you had to pinpoint one, it’s probably that he embodies the attitude fans like to think a fighter should have.

Penn has gone out of his way to find the most impossible challenge throughout his career. He will always pick a fight with the most intimidating figure in the room.

He has been extremely versatile, fighting at several different weights before finishing his career Sunday at featherweight.

It resulted in a fairly easy win for Edgar, but, again, that does nothing to tarnish what has been a legendary, trailblazing career for Penn, who was scintillating in his prime. MMAFighting.com summed it up:

Light heavyweight contender Anthony Johnson also provided some words of praise:

As Bleacher Report added, he’s a lock for the Hall of Fame:

Penn was a pioneer for the lighter weight divisions, and it’s impossible to overstate what he has meant to the sport over the past 13 years. He has nothing left to prove and has earned the right to call it quits.

It’s a little disheartening to know that he likely won’t step inside a UFC Octagon again, but even the best careers have to come to an end at some point.

The Fourth of July is over, but that doesn’t mean the fireworks have to stop.

UFC 175‘s fight card is filled to the brim with intrigue.

There will be two title fights, with Lyoto Machida attempting to do what no one—not even Anderson Silva—has been able to do against Chris Weidman, and Ronda Rousey looking to continue her transcendence over the sport against Alexis Davis.

Then you have Stefan Struve and Marcus Brimage making their comebacks after extended absences, along with the captivating knockout potential of Uriah Hall. In fact, the slate of fights is so good that bantamweight title contender Urijah Faber is on the preliminary card.

Let’s take a look at the results as the fights unfold from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

The UFC headed north of the border to Vancouver, Canada on Saturday, and the fight card for Rogers Arena was undeniably tantalizing.

The main event featured Demetrious Johnson, the longtime flyweight champion who is quickly climbing the pound-for-pound ladder, defending his title against Ali Bagautinov, who blitzed his way through the company since joining in September.

While that was easily the most compelling matchup, the rest of the card was hardly anything to sneeze at.

Rory MacDonald vs. Tyron Woodley was an important battle for the welterweight title picture, while Andrei Arlovski made his UFC return against Brendan Schaub.

That’s just a sliver of what UFC 174 had to offer, though. Let’s take a look at how the action played out.
