Former UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo has been hospitalized with an infection just two months out from his co-main event tilt with Alexander Volkanovski this May at UFC 237 in Brazil, per a recent report by Combate.
According to the report, Aldo did not respond well to the first set of antibiotics to treat a cut on his knee, but has shown improvements over the past 24 hours as he fights off a fever.
While Aldo’s bout with Volkanovski is nearly two months away, any sort of set back for the Brazilian could limit his training camp for UFC 237. That’s not to say that Aldo wouldn’t push through to fight in front of his home crowd, it’s just not an ideal situation against a killer like Volkanovski.
Luckily, Aldo’s head coach, Andre Pederneiras, is confident that the infection won’t hurt Aldo’s training camp all that much.
Aldo, 32, is coming off a huge second-round TKO win over Brazilian contender Renato Moicano this past February. Before that, the former UFC champion defeated Jeremy Stephens via first-round TKO back at UFC on FOX 30 last July, which sparked his first two-fight win streak since 2014. Aldo is currently staring down retirement from MMA and expected to finish his current UFC contract with fights in his home country of Brazil.
UFC 237 is scheduled to take place on May 11 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and feature a main event title fight between current women’s strawweight champion Rose Namajunas and top contender Jessica Andrade.
