As one of the best welterweights in the game today, former Bellator titleholder Ben Askren always seems to be in the thick of things.

Now, despite his inability to land a roster spot with the UFC compliments of an “immature” Dana White, the undefeated wrestling guru recently found a home with the Singapore-based ONE Fighting Championship.

It isn’t the most competitive promotion around but should serve as a sufficient outlet for “Funky” to stay busy and add to an already impressive 12-0 record.

It now seems as if Askren‘s promotional debut will come to a head in May for the welterweight title, as he revealed the news in a recent interview with MMAjunkie Radio, originally reported by Matt Erickson of MMA Junkie.

“It’s good,” said Askren. “It’s nice they gave me an immediate title shot. I proved my worth in my past fights, so I can just hop in there and go right for the title.”

While many fight fans are still uncertain about Askren‘s overall potential in the sport mostly due to his poor finishing rate, ONE FC CEO Victor Cui still feels confident in the signing.

“ONE FC fans all around the world are pumped to see Ben fight in the largest MMA organization in Asia,” said Cui. “He is one of the best pound-for-pound mixed martial artists on this planet.”

Askren will be taking on the winner of next month’s inaugural championship bout between submission specialist Brock Larson and knockout artist Nobutatsu Suzuki.

Stylistically, Askren should be able to stifle either title contender, but nothing is for sure in today’s sport.  Either way, it’s good to see that one of the best wrestlers around is staying relevant and busy.
