Ben Rothwell got a little defensive during a recent appearance on “UFC Tonight” when the future of his opponent, Junior dos Santos, was brought up.
The two heavyweight contenders meet this coming Sunday from Croatia in the main event of UFC Fight Night 86.
Despite being just 2-3 in his last five fights, dos Santos is a former champion. He also holds a win during that time over current title contender Stipe Miocic. Rothwell is on a four-fight win streak, all of which have come via finish.
“Why are we talking bad about him?” Rothwell wondered. “His back’s against the wall. He’s an animal backed into a corner. He’s going to be ferocious. I’ve been training for the champion Junior and he better be all of that because that’s what I’m coming to fight.”
Rothwell, who has flexed his submission skills as of late, made sure to let everyone know he holds knockout power in his hands much like “Cigano.” The Brazilian jiu-jitsu purple belt owns 20 career stoppages via KO or TKO to his credit.
“I have that too. Who knows what he’s going to do? I bring out the best in everybody,” he said. “I’m sure he’s changing up something in his camp. He throws a hard left hook, a hard left overhand and has added in kicks too. It doesn’t matter. I’m ready for anything.”
